  • With using a subsample of 1,373 poor single mothers and their children from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study, the present study examined the associations among mothers' economic hardship, depressive symptoms, and parenting stress, child abuse and neglect, and their children's behavior problems, delinquency, and social skill. These families were tracked through follow-up interviews at the time of birth, and when the children were three, five, and nine years old. The results indicated that mothers' economic hardship, depressive symptoms, and parenting stress were significant predictors to determine their children's abuse and neglect. Findings also suggest that higher levels of child abuse and neglect are positively associated with more behavior problems and delinquency, and negatively associated with social skills. Further discussions include policy and services to prevent child abuse and neglect and to alleviate mothers' financial difficulties, depression, and parenting stress.

KICCE panel data were analyzed utilizing SPSS and Process macro. As results, young children's externalized problem behaviors and school readiness were found to have partial mediating effects in the relationship between mothers' parenting efficacy and school adjustment. In addition, the complete double mediating effect by externalized problem behaviors and school readiness was proved.

  • The relationship between children's behavior problems and perceptions of their parents' childrearing behaviors was studied in 359 fourth graders. Children reported on perceptions of their parents' childrearing behaviors with the Childrearing Behavior Questionnaire (Park, 1995) and on their own behavior with the Korean Youth Self-Report (K-YSR; Oh, Lee, Hong, & Hah, 1997). Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results showed that girls viewed their fathers and mothers as more warm/accepting and their fathers as less rejecting/restricting than boys. Boys had more externalizing (aggressive/delinquent) behavior problems than girls. Children's internalizing behavior problems were positively related to their perceptions of paternal and maternal rejection/restriction and permissive/non-interfering. The relationship was differed as a function of child's sex. Children's externalizing behavior problems were positively related to their perceptions of paternal and maternal rejection/restriction and paternal permissive/non-interfering. The relationship was differed as a function of child's sex.

First, it was found that the direct effect of maternal parenting behavior on children's prosocial behavior was not significant. Second, in the relationship between the maternal parenting behavior and the children's prosocial behavior, the mediating effects of smart-media addiction and ADHD-related behaviors were significant, respectively. Third, in the effect of maternal parenting behavior on children's prosocial behavior, it was found that smart-media addiction and ADHD-related behaviors mediate it in series. These results provide to a better understanding of the process between maternal parenting behavior to children's prosocial behavior and especially emphasize the importance of smart-media addiction and ADHD-related behaviors.

  • Purpose: The purposes of the study were to develop and test a model which explains the relationship among factors affecting behavioral problems in elementary school children. Methods: The participants for the study were 368 elementary school children and their mothers at 3 elementary schools in one city. Data analysis was done using the SPSS 17.0 program for t-test, -test, and ANOVA and the AMOS 17.0 program for theoretical model testing. Results: The theoretical model showed a significant goodness of fit to the empirical data (Goodness of Fit Index: .96, Adjusted Goodness of Fit Index: .93 Comparative Fit Index: .95, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation: .06, Standardized Root Mean Square Residual: .02). Six paths were found to be statistically significant including from child rearing attitude to self-esteem, stress, stress coping and behavioral problems, and from self-esteem to stress and behavioral problems. Child rearing attitude showed a significant effect to behavioral problems by total effect. Self-esteem affected behavioral problems by total and direct effects. Conclusion: Child rearing attitude and selfesteem of children are important factors affecting behavioral problems in elementary school children.
