  • The governing differential equations for the free vibration of general arch are derived including the effect of rotary inertia in addition to the usual actions. These differential equations are applied to the sinusoidal arch and the numerical methods are developed to analyze these equations. A trial eigenvalue method and the Runge-Kutta method are used to determine the natural frequencies and to perform the integration of the differential equations, respectively. A detailed studies are made of the lowest three vibration frequencies for hinged arches with the span length equal to 10 m. The effect of the rotary inertia is analyzed. And as the numerical results the frequency versus the rise of arch and the radius of gyration are presented in figures.

  • Stepped bean with immovable ends for large amplitude of vibration including effects of longitudinal displacement, shear deformation and rotary inertia is investigated for free and forced vibration using finite element method. Modified harmonic force matrix is introduced for analysis of vibration with finite amplitude of the stepped beam under uniform hamonic loading and beam with nonuniform harmonic loading. Numerical examples of stepped beam with various support conditions are analysed for deflections and natural frequencies. Results show that the proposed method is valid and efficient.

  • The paper describes the parametric instability of free-free beams subjected to a controlled pulsating follower force. The beam has a tip rigid body not a mass point, and the direction of pulsating follower force is controlled by the direction control sensor. Equations of motion are derived by Hamilton's principle and the instability regions are obtained by finite element formulation. The effects of magnitude, rotary inertia, the distance between free end of the beam and the center of gravity of the rigid body on the instability types and regions are investigated by the change of the constant and periodic part of the follower force.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of elastica shaped arches with constant arc length. The elastica shaped arches are formed by the post-buckled column whose arc length is always constant. The equations governing free, in-plane vibration of general arch in open literature are modified for applying the free vibrations of elastica shaped arch and solved numerically to obtain frequencies and mode shapes for hinged-hinged end constraints. The effects of rotatory inertia, rise to span length ratio and slenderness ratio on natural frequencies are presented. The frequencies of elastica and parabolic shaped arches are compared. Also, typical mode shapes are presented in figures.

  • Although the problem of personal data leakage is reported to be serious, there has been no research that tries to excavate out that real cause of the leakage in scientific prospective. Although this topic is considered to be crucial, there have been no literatures relevant to the topic, and the reason for this limitation is that scientific approach to this problem was not feasible. In this respect, in this paper a model for such scientific analysis and a methodology of analysis have been devised. Results show that the degree of rigidity turns out be the determinant that vindicates the degree of leakage. The notion of data rigidity is revealed to be very strongly correlated to the number of hacking incidents in each country. The notion of resident data freedom was then deployed in this paper to determine the world-wide ranking for a slew of different countries. The United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea turned out to be the two extreme countries that lie in the spectrum of the scale, with UK the most flexible and ROK one of the most rigid.

  • Subsea pipelines have an important role in the overall tasks of offshore oil and gas production but arc exposed to various hazards with high potential risks of damage resulting in serious economic loss and impact on ocean environment. In this paper, the dynamic free span is analysed, which is one of main risk factors against the safety of subsea pipelines and the allowable length of dynamic free span which is important for the design of subsea pipelines is determined. The allowable free span length is examined by considering the relationship between vortex shedding frequency and natural frequency of pipeline free span, and the variation of the allowable length is analysed for different boundary conditions of pipe ends. The free span is regarded as a beam on elastic foundations and the boundary condition of the beam is generalized by modelling as restrained by linear and rotational spring at each end. A non-dimensionalized curve is obtained to facilitate the determination of exact allowable length of dynamic free span for subsea pipelines and is applied to the pipelines which is to be installed in the gas fields of the south of East Sea of Korea.

  • The free span of a subsea pipeline due to seabed scouring can result in structural failure by severe ocean environmental loads and vortex induced vibrations. This Paper examines the safety of subsea pipelines with free spans under axial compressive load. The variation of allowable lengths of static and dynamic free spans is examined for generalized boundary conditions. The free span is modelled as a beam with an elastic foundations and the boundary condition is replaced by linear and rotational springs at each end. The static and dynamic free span curves are obtained with a function of non-dimensional parameters. A case study is carried out to introduce the application method of the curve. The results of this study can be usefully applied for the design of subsea pipelines with a free span.

  • The aim of this study was to develop the noise and vibration damping wood-based composites by using viscoelastic polymer materials. Polyvinylchloride(PVC) was plasticized with 20-140 phr bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate(DOP) and the dynamic tensile mechanical properties were measured at 110Hz and approximate temperature range -100 to 150$^{\circ}$ using a Rheovibron Instrument. The PVC/DOP blends were shown to be compatible in all proportions, and both T(E”$_{max}$) and T(tan${\delta}_{max}$) shifted to the lower temperature side as the DOP content increased. The vibration damping properties of wood/polymer composites were measured using the Rheovibron instrument in a bending mode. The composite damping factor(tan ${\delta}_{c}$) of wood /PVC-DOP/wood sandwich structure correlated with the loss factor and that of the coated structure correlated with the loss modulus(E”) of the polymer layer. In addition, the sandwich structure was found to be more effective in damping than the coated structure. The logarithmic decrement (${\Delta}$c) curve of a sandwich structure, which was determined by the free-free flexural vibration method was similar in shape to the tan ${\delta}_{c}$ curve.

  • This paper deals with the boundary conditions of the stress resultants at the mid-arc for free vibration analyses of the arch. The considered arch is a horseshoe symmetric elliptic arch. The work dealing with the boundary conditions of the deflection at both ends of the arch has already been reported in the open literature. This revisited paper aims to study the suitability of the boundary conditions of the stress resultants at the mid-arc to be replaced by the boundary condition at both ends. In this study, the boundary conditions of the stress resultants at the mid-arc are newly derived based on the theory of the previous work, and natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained using the new boundary conditions of the stress resultants. The numerical results of this paper confirm that the new boundary conditions have been validated according to previous studies and results of finite element ADINA.

  • In this paper, hydroelastic responses of the very large floating structure are studied based on the linear potential theory. A theoretical method is developed to analyze the hydroelastic reponses of very large floating structures(VLFS) using the pressure distribution method and the modal expansion method. The singularities distributed on a zero draft plate at the free surfaces and hydrodynamic pressures are evaluated. The deflections of structure are expanded approximately in terms of natural mode functions of free-free beam. The calculated items are pressure distributions. vertical motions, hydrodynamic coefficients and bending moments of VLFS. The numerical results are compared with those measured by experiments.
