Korean Dietary Life from the View of Foreigner in the early 1900s (1900년대 초 외국인이 본 한국인의 식생활)

  • Western countries came to Asia aggressively in the early 1900s. Westerners who came to Korea at that time also had a various jobs with diplomats, missionaries, doctors, and so on. Korean diet was curious and shocking to foreigners in the early 1990s, so they made a record of the Korean diet. They thought Korea was peaceful, attractive and rich to eat. Koreans ate mainly rice and kimchi, a variety of grains, vegetables and bibimbap. Korea had a variety of meat and fish, seaweed, and herbs(ginseng). Foreigners said Koreans were greedy for food and ate a lot. Koreans ate basically a bowl of rice(bap), a bowl of soup(kuk), kimchi, soy sauce and other dishes. If Koreans wanted to set a table in abundance, they have meat soup(kuk) with meat and additional fish like as raw fish, dried fish, and boiled or fried fish. Korean people had a jangdokdae with Ongki(Earthen jar) where soy sauce(kanjang), soybean paste(doenjang), red pepper paste(kochujang), pickles (jang-achi) have been fermented. Foreigners felt the smell of lacquer tree and kimchi hung in the air from Korean people. While they were compared it to the smell of western rim cheese burger, they said Korea was a country with nasty smell in the feet. By the records of foreigners in the early 1900s, Korean's diets and image were appeared objectively.

Chemical Properties of Medicinal Plant Cultivated Soils (약용작물(藥用作物) 재배지(栽培地) 토양(土壤)의 화학성분(化學成分) 함량(含量))

  • This survey was conducted to investigate the chemical properties of soils cultivated medicinal plants. The soils were collected at 254 sites(Angelica gigas : 81, Astragalus membranceus : 38, Platycodn glandiflorum : 36, Paeonia albiflora : 34, Codonopsis lanoceolata : 32, Ligusticum chuanxiong : 17. Bupleurum falcatum : 16, respectively) throughout the country by 0-15cm depth. The chemical properties of soils were pH 5.6, O.M 3.0%. Av.$P_2O_5$ : 405 mg/kg, Ex.K : $0.67cmol^+/kg$, Ex.Ca : $6.3cmol^+/kg$, Ex.mg : $1.6cmol^+/kg$. The percentage distribution of pH on the basis of soil sample numbers were much more at the 5.1-6.0 range than any other ranges, especially those of below pH 6.0 were 83-91% for Angelica gigas, Platycodn glandiflorum and Codonopsis lanoceolata. The distribution of OM and Av.$P_2O_5$ in soils were much at the 2.1-4.0% and above 500mg/kg ranges, respectively. And the content of those in soils cultivated with Platycodn glandiflorum were lower than any other medicinal plants. The distribution of exchangeable cations in soils were much at the 0.2-0.8, 2.1-4.0 and $0.5-2.0cmol^+/kg$ of Ex.K. Ca and mg. respectively, and the contents were higher in soils cultivated Astragalus membranceus. and lower in soils cultivated Platycodn glandiflorum and Codonopsis lanoceolata than any other samples.

Effect of Seedling Size on Bolting and Yield of Ostericum koreanum (MAX.) KITAGAWA (강활(羌活)의 묘(苗)크기가 추대(抽臺) 및 수양(收量)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of planting date and planting methods with seedling size on bolting and yield of Ostericum koreanum (MAX.) KITAGAWA Seeding methods were also reviewed to imvestigate their effects on seedling characteristics. This experiment was carried out in Chuncheon during 1988 growing season. The small seeding rate and broadcasting had higher rates of emergence than the others. There was no big difference in seedling size by seedling rate, and more seedling growth was in drilling methods among seed planting methods. The quantity of seedling were produced with the order of medium, small and lastly large seedling. Dense planting $(8l\;/33m^2)$ was advantageous in producing small seedling. Large seedling had earlier flowering than the others and growth was good in planting small seedling with drilling method. The rates of bolting by seedling sizes were 89.6% in large, 64.6% in medium and 36.9% in small seedling. Bolting was influenced the root Quality by producing lignified root which had a least commercial value. More root growth was shown in unbolting plant compared to bolting plant seedling and broadcasting had much more root growth than seedling from drilling. Fresh root yield of unbolting plant was higher than that of bolting plant and highest yield was obtained in the broadcasting plot with small seedling.

Healing Landscape Design for Hospital Outdoor Space - A Case of the Kyeongsang National University Hospital in Changwon - (치유경관의 개념을 적용한 병원 옥외공간 조경설계 - 창원 경상대학교 병원을 사례로 -)

  • This paper presents a landscape design proposal for the Kyeongsang National University Hospital in Changwon, Kyeongsangnam-do. The site is located at 555 Samjeongja-dong, Seongsan-gu, Changwon, Kyeongsangnam-do, and its area is approximately $79,743.1m^2$. The goal of the design was to create a landscape that helps the patients' recovery and public well-being as well as respects the surrounding environment. In order to achieve this goal, three design subjects were considered: maximizing the healing functions of the landscape, promoting ecologically regenerative landscape, and increasing the aesthetic value of the landscape based on the local context. For the healing aspect, first, therapeutic plants were carefully selected and various healing programs were introduced to the open space area such as the sensory garden, meditative space, the medicinal herb garden, outdoor acupressure treatment facilities, remedial playground etc. In addition, as the importance of patient's privacy is emphasized in research, the space and circulation patterns were divided according to the characteristics of the users. For ecological consideration, the design proposed to preserve and extend the existing ridgeline with pine forest, and recover the natural water system and recycle the water for the landscape management. For the aesthetic experience of the people, in contrast to the surrounding evergreen forest, diverse deciduous and flowering plants were introduced to arouse a sense of the season, and fruit bearing trees for wildlife to create a specific mood of being in nature so that people can listen to the songs of the birds and watch squirrels play etc. In addition, all the spaces and facilities were designed and placed according to universal design principles so that there would be no barrier for the patients to use them. Also, a sustainable management scheme was suggested to maintain the landscape in ecological and economical ways.

Honokiol Inhibits Nitric Oxide-Induced Apoptosis in Rabbit Articular Chondrocytes via PI-3K/AKT Pathway (Honokiol에 의한 토끼의 무릎 연골세포에서 PI-3K/AKT pathway를 통하여 nitric oxide에 의해 유도되는 세포사멸의 억제)

  • Honokiol is a small molecular weight ligand originally isolated from the Chinese medicinal herb Magnolia officinalis, a plant used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine [9]. In a previous study, the effects of honokiol were shown to have anti-angiogenic, anti-invasive and anti-proliferative activities in a variety of cancers [1,3,4,11,13,17,24,29,30]. We showed previously that direct production of nitric oxide (NO) by treatment of NO donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), led to apoptosis in rabbit articular chondrocytes [15,16]. This study confirmed that NO-induced apoptosis was suppressed by honokiol treatment in a dose-dependent manner as determined by cell phenotype, MTT assay, Western blot analysis and FACS analysis in articular chondrocytes. Treatment of honokiol inhibited SNP-induced expression of p53 as well as DNA fragmentation in articular chondrocytes, but increased expressionof pro-caspase-3. Inhibition of SNP-induced apoptosis by honokiol treatment was rescued by LY294002, the specific inhibitors of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI-3K) in articular chondrocytes. Our results indicate that honokiol inhibits NO-induced apoptosis via PI-3K/AKT pathway in rabbit articular chondrocytes.

Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities of Lactobacillus-fermented Artemisia annua L. as a Potential Fish Feed Additive (양어 사료첨가제로서의 유산균 발효 개똥쑥의 항산화 및 항균활성)

  • Fermented medical herbs using Lactobacilli have attracted significant attention due to their enhanced biological activities. A traditional medicinal plant, Artemisia annua L., was fermented using a probiotic strain, L. plantarum SK3494. The strain was isolated from Artemisia princeps var. orientalis and molecularly identified through sequence similarities and phylogenetic tree analysis. The antioxidant activity of L. plantarum-fermented A. annua L. (LFA) was determined using the DPPH free radical scavenging assay. Cellular antioxidant activity of LFA was examined using the superoxide radical reduction assay in MAT-C cells. Total polyphenol contents (TPC) and flavonoid contents (TFC) of LFA were determined. The antibacterial activity of LFA against fish pathogens was also determined in this study. The viable cell number (9.38 log10 CFU/ml) and pH (4.1) results showed good adaptive ability of the selected strain during fermentation. LFA was found to have enhanced antioxidant activity compared to non-fermented A. annua L. (NFA) based on the DPPH assay. Cellular antioxidant activity was present in both LFA and NFA. After 24 hr and 48 hr of fermentation, the LFA also showed antibacterial activities against fish pathogens Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae and Vibrio ichthyoenteri. These results suggest that L. plantarum-fermented A. annua L. may have potential as a feed additive in aquaculture.

Selection of Acifluorfen-tolerant Eastern Black Nightshade (Solanum ptycanthum Dun) and the Expression of This Tolerance in Regenerated Plants and Their Progeny (제초제 Acifluorfen 저항성 세포주 선발 및 분화된 식물체와 그 후대에서의 저항성 발현)

  • Acifluorfen-tolerant cell lines of S, ptycanthum were isolated by stepwise selection using suspension culture. Growth of unselected line was completely inhibited at $0.5\;\mu\textrm{M}$, while some selected lines grew at $8\;\mu\textrm{M}$ acifluorfen. After subculturing on acifluorfen-free medium for 4 passages, six of the eleven cell lines screened and maintained their tolerance to $2\;\mu\textrm{M}$ acifluorfen. The regeneration capacity of selected cell lines in Solanum ptycanthum differed depending on the tell line. The acifluorfen tolerance of the somarclones regenerated from acifluorfen-tolerant cell lines differed depending on the somarclone. When plants were heated with $16\;\mu\textrm{M}$ acifluorfen, unselected control plane had over 75% phytotoxicity Many selected cell lines had less phytotoxicity than the seed-grown control plants. Tolerance to acifluorfen was inherited to the self-pollinated progenies. The inheritance patterns differed depending on the clone. Acifluorfen tolerance was inherited as a semidominant trait. Other segregation patterns were also observed. acifluorfen tolerance was recessive and acifluorfen sensitivity was dominant.

Analysis of Phytochemicals in Popular Medicinal Herbs by HPLC and GC-MS (HPLC와 GC/MS를 활용한 약용식물 유래 phytochemicals 분석)

  • Oriental herbs are reported as having potent functions for preventing many types of diseases. They also appear to have positive effects and potential capabilities for skin care. Among the many oriental herbs that are available, we chose to analyze four medicinal herbs, Korean red ginseng, Artemisia capillaries Thunb, Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq, and Foeniculum vulgare Mill, because all are popular and considered as favorite medicinal plants in Korea. Extracts of the herbs were obtained by various methods such as using distilled water, ethyl ether, methanol, ethanol, benzene, 1-butanol, and chloroform. Nine phytochemicals were detected in the extracts: maltol, adenosine, b-pinene, menthone, pulegone, limonene, anethole, estragole, and fenchone, which reportedly have multi-functionalities. All phytochemicals were analyzed quantitatively by various chromatographic techniques such as HPLC and gas chromatography-mass (GC-MS) spectrometry. This article also presents the optimum conditions for extracting these 9 targeted phytochemical compounds that were derived from 4 popular oriental herbs, which could be useful for the efficient preparation of each phytochemical.

Antimicrobial Activity of Houttuynia cordata Ethanol Extract against Major Clinical Resistant Microorganisms (주요 임상 내성균에 대한 어성초 에탄올 추출물의 항균효과)

  • The increase in resistance by pathogenic bacteria to multiple antimicrobial agents has become a significant treat, as the effective antimicrobial agents available for the patients infected by such resistant bacteria are reduced, or even eliminated. Several natural plant extracts have exhibited antibacterial and synergistic activity against various resistant microorganisms. Houttuynia cordata is frequently used by many traditional medicine practicioners for its antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. This study investigated the antibacterial effects of H. cordata extract against clinical multi-resistant bacteria, and compared the two methods used for the antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Thirty isolates of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA, 10), Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE, 10), Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB, 10) were included in this study. The antibacterial effect of H. cordata was tested by disk diffusion and microbroth dilution methods as per CLSI guidelines. In disk diffusion, all isolates (30) showed no inhibition to 30,000 ug/mL of H. cordata. But in the microbroth dilution method, $MIC_{90}$ of H. cordata was 4,096 ug/mL, 8,192 ug/mL and 4,096 ug/mL in MRSA, VRE and CRAB, respectively. These results demonstrate that H. cordata exhibits antibacterial activity against MRSA, VRE and CRAB. Moreover, the microbroth dilution method is a more effective method than disk diffusion to evaluate the antibacterial activity of natural products. The Disk diffusion method used to evaluate the antibacterial activity of natural products required new standard guidelines including inoculum concentration of bacteria.

Development of Rice Wines Using Cornus officinalis and Scutellaria baicalensis by Antioxidant Activity Tests (고항산화능 소재 선발을 바탕으로 한 산수유와 황금을 이용한 약주 개발)

  • In this study, the antioxidant activities of 27 medicinal herbs and plants were measured. The dried medicinal herbs and plants were pulverized and extracted by water, 15% ethanol, and 45% ethanol, respectively at above $80^{circ}C$ for 90 minutes. The original and diluted extracts were tested for their antioxidant activities by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical-scavenging activity assay. Cornus officinalis (C) and Scutellaria baicalensis (S) were selected to develop rice wines with higher antioxidant activities, based on the result of the 45% ethanol extraction. The rice wine developed using sample showed the highest antioxidant activity as comparing to those of other commercial rice wines. The rice wine samples were analyzed for titratable acidity, pH, $^{\circ}Brix$, reducing sugar content, color (L, a, b), amino-acidity, and ultraviolet absorption. The preferences for color, aroma, and overall acceptability were determined using a 9-point hedonic scale by 150 consumers. The sweetness, sourness, fruitiness, color, and medicinal herb-taste levels of the developed rice wines were also evaluated, using a 9-point just-about-right scale. The mean overall acceptability score of c (5.54) was higher than that of sample S. Based on the results, the sourness and medicinal herb-taste levels of sample s should be modified to higher levels, and the fruitiness of sample S also needs to be adjusted. For a future study, the final compositions of the developed rice wines will be adjusted for product launching based on the preference test data acquired in this study.
