Research Activities of Transpiration Cooling for High-Performance Flight Engines (고성능 비행체 엔진을 위한 분출냉각의 연구동향)

  • Transpiration cooling is the most effective cooling technique for the high-performance liquid rockets and air-breathing engines operating in aggressive environments with higher pressures and temperatures. When applying transpiration cooling, combustor liners and turbine blades/vanes are cooled by the coolant(air or fuel) passing through their porous walls and also the exit coolant acting as an insulating film. Practical implementation of the cooling technique has been hampered by the limitations of available porous materials. But advances in metal-joining techniques have led to the development of multi-laminate porous structures such as Lamilloy$^{(R)}$ fabricated from several diffusion-bonded, etched metal thin sheets. And also with the availability of lightweight, ceramic matrix composites(CMC), transpiration cooling now seems to be a promising technique for high-performance engine cooling. This paper reviews recent research activities of transpiration cooling and its applications to gas turbines, liquid rockets, and the engines for hypersonic vehicles.

The search for more practical methods of increasing the internal heat transfer within the walls has led to the development of multi-laminate porous structures, such as Lamilloy$^{(R)}$ and Transply$^{(R)}$. This paper reviews recent research activities of transpiration cooling for the propulsions of liquid rocket, gas turbine, and scramjet.

Estimation Methods for Turbine Nozzle Throat Area Reduction of A LOx/Kerosene Gas Generator Cycle Liquid Propellant Rocket Engine (액체산소/케로신 가스발생기 사이클 액체로켓엔진 터빈 노즐목 면적 변화 추정 방법)

  • Carbon deposition on the turbine nozzle throat of a LOx/kerosene gas generator cycle(open cycle) engine causes performance reduction of the engine. Estimation methods for a turbine nozzle throat area are proposed. The discharge coefficient of the turbine nozzle was estimated with the turbine gas properties such as gas constant, specific heat ratio, and temperatures. The pressure ratio and temperature ratio of the turbine nozzle throat, was utilized to estimate the discharge coefficient also. Estimated discharge coefficient of turbine nozzle throat of KSLV-II 1st stage engine shows the carbon deposition effects on the turbine nozzle throat of a LOx/kerosene open cycle engine.

An Experimental Study on the Spray Characteristics of a Rotating Fuel Nozzle of a Slinger Combustor for Different Flow Rates and Rotating Speeds (슬링거 연소기 회전연료노즐의 유량과 회전수에 따른 분무특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • An experimental study was conducted to observe the spray characteristics for different flow rates and rotating speeds of a rotating fuel nozzle of a slinger combustor. The water spray ejected from the nozzle orifice was visualized using a high-speed camera and a light source. It was confirmed that the atomization was improved, as the flow rate decreased and rotating speed increased. The characteristic maps for the spray characteristics and performance parameters showed that the aerodynamic Weber number and the liquid-air momentum flux ratio were associated with the liquid primary breakup, and the liquid-air momentum flux ratio and Rossby number were closely correlated with the liquid ejection mode.

  • Many of thermodynamic-based diesel combustion simulations incorporated a model of fuel spray which attempts to describe how the spray develops according to time. Because the spray geometry is an essential aspect of the fuel-air mixing process, it is necessary to be calculated quantitatively for the purpose of heat release and emission analysis. In this paper, we proposed the calculating method of non-evaporation spray behaviors by injection rate shapes under actual operating conditions of diesel engine. We confirmed the utility of this calculating model as the calculated results were compared with the measured results. This calculating program can be applied usefully to study on the diesel spray behavior.
