The atomization phenomena and spray characteristics of drum type rotary atomizer using centrifugal force from high rotational speed of gas turbine engine shaft were studied through rotary atomizer modeling analysis and experimental method. A test rig for rotary atomization that has range of $5,000{\sim}40,000\;rpm$ was used to make similarity for high speed rotating shaft. Spray visualization methodology and Phase Doppler Anemometry were also used to investigate the atomization mechanism and spray characteristics. We found that the rotating fuel spray has unique breakup process and we have to make breakup point earlier through increasing rotating speed to improve atomization performance.

LES(Large eddy simulation) of breakup and atomization of a liquid jet into cross turbulent flow was performed. Two phase flow between a gas phase and a liquid phase was modeled by a mixed numerical scheme of both Eulerian and Lagrangian methods for gas and liquid phases respectively. The first and second breakup of liquid column was observed. The penetration depth in cross flow was comparable with experimental data for several variant of a liquid-gas momentum flux ratio by varying liquid injection velocities. SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) distribution downstream of jet was analyzed.
The droplet ejection behavior from drop-on-demand printhead are investigated numerically for Newtonian and shear-thinning fluid. The numerical simulation is performed using a volume-of-fluid model. In this study, we compare the printable range in terms of Z number and pinch-off time for Newtonian and shear-thinning fluids. The printability range are found to be 1.08 $$\leq_-$$ Z $$\leq_-$$ 12.9 for Newtonian fluid and 0.8 $$\leq_-$$ Z $$\leq_-$$ 12.9 for shear-thinning fluid. However, air entrainment is observed during merging of primary and satellite droplet within the printability range. The pinch-off time of the shear-thinning fluid is apparently shorter compared to the corresponding Newtonian fluid due to shear-thinning effects and the differences in the pinch-off time is enlarged significantly when the capillary number is larger than 0.5.

The effect of two-phase spray injected into subsonic cross-flow was studied experimentally. External-mixing of two-phase spray from orifice nozzle with L/d of 3 was tested with various air-liquid ratio that ranges from 0 to 59.4%. Trajectory of spray and breakup phenomena were investigated by shadowgraph photography. Detailed spray structure was characterized in terms of SMD, droplet velocity, and volume flux using PDPA. Experimental results indicate that penetration length was increased and collision point of liquid jets approached to nozzle exit and distributions of mist-like spray were obtained by increasing air-liquid ratio.

The effects of injection conditions on the droplet sizes resulting from the disintegration of a liquid jet by a fast annular gas stream have been investigated using PDPA. The gas/liquid momentum ratio M = $\rho$$_{g}$$U_{g}$$^2$/$\rho$$_1$$U_1$$^2$ and Weber number We = $\rho$$_{g}$$g^2$$D_1$/$\sigma$ are selected as key parameters in atomization of shear coaxial spray from the fluid mechanics standpoint. It is revealed that SMD( $D_{32}$) varies inversely with gas/liquid momentum ratio(M), whereas Weber number(We) has little effect on the droplet sizes as gas velocities increase. It is found that gas/liquid momentum ratio is more dominant factor controlling the breakup and atomization process of shear coaxial spray. Finally, an empirical correlation between SMD and injection conditions(i.e. gas/liquid momentum ratio M and Weber number We) is proposed based on the experimental results.

Present studies of these experiments was conducted to using water, over a range of cross-flow velocities from 42 to 136 m/s, with injection frequencies from 35.7 to 166.2 Hz. In cross-flow field, main parameters of liquid jet for secondary breakup were cross-flow drag rather than pressure pulse frequency. As oscillation of the periodic pressure, liquid jet was moved up and down. Also, a bulk of liquid jet puff was detected at upper field of liquid surface. Because of pressure pulsation frequency, an inclination of SMD for the structured layer was evanescent. Cross-sectional characteristics of SMD at downstream area were non-structured distributions. The tendency of volume flux value for various frequency of pressure pulse was same distribution. And volume flux was decreased when the frequency of pressure pulse increasing.

The analysis on two-phase flow in a Lean Direct Injection(LDI) combustor has been investigated. Linearized Instability Sheet Atomization(LISA) and Aerodynamically Progressed Taylor Analogy Breakup(APTAB) breakup models are applied to simulate the droplet breakup process in hollow-cone spray. Breakup model is validated by comparing penetration length and Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD) of the experiment and simulation. In the LDI combustor, Precessing Vortex Core(PVC) is developed by swirling flow and most droplets are atomized along the PVC. It has been confirmed that all droplets have Stokes number less than 1.0.

Purpose: In this study, the effect of changes in the variables related to water droplets on the spray density on the floor in the analysis of the water mist fire protection system using FDS was analyzed. Method: When the spray of the water mist nozzle was analyzed in FDS, Particles Per Seconds, Particle Velocity, Size Distribution, and Spray Pattern Shape that can be set in relation to droplets were input to review the analyzed results. Result: In the analysis results, when the number of particles per second was set above a certain value, the spray density of the floor was similar. In the case of Particle Velocity, as the velocity decreases, the spray density of the central portion increases but decreases at a distance of 0.15m or more. From the analysis of the change in the size distribution function, it was found that an increase in the 𝛾 value increases the spray density of the central part, but the value at a remote location decreases. Compared to the result of applying the Gaussian distribution, the median value decreases dramatically when the uniform distribution is applied, but the value at the adjacent position increases. Conclusion: Variables related to the droplet properties of the FDS affect the spray density of the floor. Therefore, in order to increase the reliability of results before performing analyses such as fire suppression or cooling, a sufficient review of input variables is required.
