A Study of Shot Peened Spring Steel(SUP9) for Fatigue Life Improvement and Compressive Residual Stress Disappearance on the High Temperature (SUP9 스프링강의 숏피닝가공에 의한 피로수명향상과 고온환경에서의 압축잔류응력 소멸현상에 관한 연구)

  • The compressive residual stress, which is induced by shot peening process, seems to be an Important factor in increasing the fatigue strength. And then it was showed that residual stress was disappearenced at the high temperature. The fatigue charateristic investigation of a SUP9 spring steel processed shot peening is performed by considering the high temperature service conditions in the range of room temperature through $180^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. The fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at high temperature is considerable lower than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

  • Torsional vibration analysis is necessary at design stage to ensure the reliability of a system particularly when the driven machine is a reciprocating compressor. This paper contains the results of torsional vibration analysis and fatigue strength evaluation for 540 kW compressor driving motor. Torsional vibration analysis showed that the $2^{nd}$ torsional mode of the entire shaft system has the possibility of resonance with the $14^{th}$ order excitation of compressor and twin line frequency of motor at operating speed. Therefore, the analyses were required to ensure the structural reliability of the motor. The fatigue strength was evaluated for the shaft and inner fans using the results of forced vibration analysis. It is concluded that the motor has sufficient fatigue strength under normal operating condition.

  • 산업 현장에 필수적으로 사용하는 유틸리티 시스템(Utility System)의 하나인 에어를 생산하는 공기압 축기의 운전방식은 조작 패널부에 사용자가 설정한 셋팅값에 의해 내부의 밸브를 제어하여 로딩 및 언로딩 운전을 한다. 이로 인해 대용량(100HP, 200HP)의 공기압축기를 여러대 사용하는 수용가에서는 연속 다발적인 운전으로 인한 전력 사용량의 변동으로 역률 저하 및 연속가동으로 인한 설비 과부하 및 내부 기계 베어링 피로도 증가 및 파손 등 고장이 발생되는 문제점이 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 인공 신경회로망(ANN:Artificial Neural Network)을 이용하여 최적의 에너지 운용 알고리즘을 제안하여 실계통의 문제점을 분석하여 개선하고자 한다.

  • Valve springs with high fatigue strength corresponding to the incresement of working stresses, are required for the higher generating power and the better fuel economy of automobile engines. For this purpose, high strength oil tempered wires are being used. By a method of the high strength for the valve spring, modification of manufacturing processes is being applied. In this case, the cause and effect for the improvement of the fatigue strength has not yet been explained obviously. Therefore, in this report, comparison of fatigue life between valve springs of conventional processes with oil tempered wires and new manufacturing processes was made. As a result of the fatigue test, the fatigue life of the latter was attained maximum 7 times than that of the former. It was cleared that the improvement of the fatigue life was caused by difference of compressive residual stresses at depth of 0.2mm below the inner side surface of both valve springs.

  • Microcrack development in the macheon gabbro, the Sangju sandstone and the Jungsun marble due to fatigue stresses was investigated using differential strain analysis and microscopic observations from fluorescent-dyed thin sections. In the Macheon gabbro, various types of cracks, including gran boundary cracks, cleavage cracks, intragranular cracks adn intergranular cracks were developed. However, only grain boundary cracks were produced in the Sangju sandstone and the Jungsun marble due to fatigue stress. Many microcracks were produced due to fatigue stresses in the macheon gabbro. However, few microcracks were produced in the Sangju sandstone and the Jungsun marble. Fatigue stresses produced new microcracks in the Junngsun marble and the Macheon gabbro, but only pre-existing grain boundary cracks were lengthened in the Sangju snadstone. Most microcracks were produced within a few tens of numbers of cyclic loading, indicating that rocks under fatigue stresses will be damaged at the early stage of cyclic loading.

  • In this study, a quantitative analysis technique for the damage process of reinforced concrete beams under repeated shear loading is proposed, which can express the progressively increasing strain and stiffness reduction. The analysis technique is mainly based on the modified compression field theory and scalar damage concept. which describe the strain and stress configuration in the shear zone by considering the 2-dimensional effect, and express the degradation of principal compressive strut by cyclic strain increment, secant modulus decrement, and modifying the parabolic stress strain relationship. The analysis of the response of RC beams under repeated shear-flexure loading has been carried out and compared with the experimental results. The present theory may efficiently be used to evaluate the deflection and strain accumulation under repeated loadings.

2-Step Shot Peening Process for the Improvement of Fatigue Crack Growth Properties (균열 특성 개선을 위한 2단 쇼트피닝 가공)

  • In this study, to investigate the effects of 2-step shot peening at the surface of spring steel, crack growth tests are conducted on spring steel and shot peened specimens. And then the residual stresses and fractographs are examined. The crack growth equation that can describe the whole crack growth behavior is used to evaluate the experiment results. The results show that fatigue crack glows slowly in the shot peened specimen than in the unpeened. And in the case of the 2-step shot peened specimen the initial stress intensity factor range and the fracture toughness is higher than the unpeened specimen due to the compressive residual stress. Fractographs show that the compressive residual stress of the surface suppress the fatigue crack opening and consequently slow crack growth rates.

  • The effects of shot peening an the fatigue strength are studied in this paper. Applying the multistage shot peening on the material. the relation between the residual stress and fatigue strength compressive is investigated. Observing tensile strength elongation. reduction of area. hardness. and roughness. the results can be summarized as follows ; 1.The change of mechanical properties is small before and after the shot peening is carried out. The change of hardness is also small in high hardness material. 2.The surface roughness does not affect the fatigue strength. but the surface roughness is improved by multi-stage shot peening. 3.The fatigue strength of multi-stage shot peening material is 756MPa and is 1.78 times higher than that of un-peened material. 4.The maximum compressive residual strength of multi-stage shot peening material is -792MPa the fatigue strength seems to be improved by residual stress.

  • Type 2 compressed natural gas(CNG) storage vessels for automobiles are becoming widely used. They are not only supplied to automakers in Korea, such as Hyundai Motors, but increasingly, they are being exported overseas. Autofrettage is a process that produces beneficial residual stresses in a vessel by subjecting it to excessive internal pressure. This strengthens the vessel and improves its fatigue resistance. This paper presents research investigating the autoftettage process and residual stresses it produces in type 2 CNG storage vessels. A finite element analysis technique and a closed form equation are used. Then, fatigue resistance is analyzed through a fatigue evaluation performed according to ASME section VIII.

  • Hardened layer and compressive residual stress created by carburized treatment effect on bending fatigue strength of gear massively. Also, shot peening treatment improves the strength of carburized gear as it does the hardness and residual stress of surface layer. In these days shot peening techniques are welcomed as one of physical improvement ways around the surface of materials. It is used widely because qualitative analysis of shot peening has become possible and surface treatment can be done with very little costs compared to other surface improvement methods. Therefore this study investigates the effect of shot peening in surface shape and bending fatigue strength after doing many kinds of shot peening treatments, then doing fatigue test and also explained characteristics of shot peening gear.
