  • The purpose of this study is to improve construction cost, time, and field management when constructing a road on soft soil foundation by eliminating extra-banking of subgrade layer after completion of the consolidation process. The subgrade layer was pre-constructed before the soft ground improvement. And then it was confirmed by the field test that the compaction effect was maintained or not after consolidation settlement. As a result of the experiment, all subgrade layers were kept constant except for the top subgrade layer. So it would be advantageous to secure economical and practical in road construction if subgrade layers were constructed exclusive of the top subgrade layer.

  • A large scale field test of prefabricated vertical drains was performed to anayze the effect of parameters of the very soft clay at a test site. compression index and the coefficient of horizontal consolidation obtained by back-analysis of settlement data were compared with those obtained by means of laboratory tests. Hyperbolic method, Asaoka meoth and curve fitting method were used to compute final settlement of coefficient of consolidation. The relationships of settlement measurement(Sm) versus design settlement(St) and the measurement consolidation ratio(Um) versus design consolidation (Ut) were shown as Sm=(1.0~1.1) St , Um=(1.13~1.17) Ut at 1.0m spacing of drain and Sm=(0.7~0.8)St, Um= (0.92~0.99) Ut at 1.5 m spacing of drain, respectively . The relationships of the field compression index(CcField) and virgin compression index(vcc lab) were shown as Ccfield =(1.0~1.2)vcc lab . But it was nearly within the same range when considering the error factor with the determination method of virgin compression index and the prediction back-analysis of the settlement data was larger than the coefficient of vertical consolidation, and the ratio of consolidation coefficient (Ch/Cv) was Ch =(2.4~2.9) Cv , Ch=(3.4~4.2) Cv at 1.0m and 1.5m spacing of drain, respectively.

  • Pusan clay, which is distributed in the Nakdong River estuary, is unusually soft and thick compared with other clays in the world. Because the consolidation settlement of the clay was significantly underestimated in several recent reclamation projects, it has been emphasized particularly on the need of studying the permeability characteristics. This study carries out vertical and horizontal permeability tests on undisturbed and consolidated samples from two sites of the area. The results of the study show the peculiar permeability anisotropy and the relationships with other indexes on Pusan clay and also comparison with those of other world clays.

  • The Pre-loading method has been widely used for the soft ground stabilization but long construction times and the transport of large quantities of fill material are required. To shorten the construction periods, the vertical drain method is generally applied simultaneously. But the high costs of the fill materials along with environmental damages remain as the main difficulties to apply this method. Therefore, a complimentary way to reduce both the height of the embankment and the consolidation time is needed. In this study, the electro-osmosis method, which is able to shorten the consolidation time and minimize the damage of the environment, was performed with a model test. The results show that as the voltage increases the consolidation settlements, consolidation drainage and shear strength also increase while the water content decreases.

  • This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on the load carrying capacity and consolidation behavior of suction piles. Three dimensional numerical models which reflect realistic ground conditions and installation procedures including the ground-suction pile interface were adopted to conduct a parametric study on variables such as the length-diameter ratio and the loading configurations, i.e, vertical, horizontal, and combined loads. The results indicated that the load carrying capacity of a suction pile can only be realistically obtained when the interface behavior between the suction pile and the ground is correctly modeled. Also carried out was the stress-pore pressure coupled analysis to investigate the consolidation behavior of the suction pile after the application of a vertical loading. Based on the results, failure envelops and associated equations were developed, which can be used to estimate load carrying capacity of suction piles installed in similar conditions considered in this study. The results of consolidation analysis based on the stress-pore pressure coupled analysis indicate that no significant excess pore pressure and associated consolidation settlement occur for the loading configuration considered in part due to the load transfer mechanism of the suction pile.

  • Sand pile is widely used as a ground improvement method. Although the primary purpose of constructing sand pile is accelerating consolidation, composite ground effect also can be gained by constructing sand pile. This study was accomplished to understand composite ground effect on the ground improved by sand piles which were applied as vertical drainage material when area replacement ratio was small relatively. For determining bearing capacities of origin ground and sand piles and analysing interaction between embankment and origin ground, bearing tests and earth pressure monitoring are performed. From the results, it turned out that the contribution of sand pile as a load bearing mechanism is not substantial. However, the bearing capacity of sand pile was increased to sixty percentages when compared with origin ground. The increasement of bearing capacity could be caused the change of consolidation characteristics during the process of consolidation by overburden load. Therefore, the composite ground effects depending on stiffness increasement of sand pile would be estimated as a factor decreasing consolidation settlement.

  • Vertical drain has usually been used to accelerate the consolidation of soft clay deposits with high moisture content. Busan thick clay deposits are subjected to artesian pressure from an aquifer in sand and gravel layers. However, effect of artesian pressure existing in drainage-installed soft ground on consolidation behaviors is not well known. This paper investigates the consolidation behavior of drainage-installed soft ground at the Nakdong river estuary with artesian pressure and without artesian pressure. A series of one-dimensional large size column test was carried out to find out the consolidation characteristics of clay. Test results indicated that total settlement of clay with artesian pressure was higher than that without artesian pressure because effective stress decreased due to upward flow. Dissipation rate of excess pore water pressure delayed and excess pore water pressure did not fully dissipate in clay layer with artesian pressure. Undrained shear strength of clay ground with artesian pressure was lower than that without artesian pressure.

  • To solve the problem of saturated dredged soil dumping area, it is possible to extend the life span of dredged soil dumping area by accelerating consolidation of dredged soil and making alluvial soil layer consolidated additionally by using dewatering method and PDF method without construction of new dumping area which entails great expense. Self-weight consolidation tests on samples from Busan and Incheon with the column of 400 mm in diameter were conducted to estimate those methods applicability to domestic dredged soil. As a result of tests, it was proved that dewatering method and PDF method were highly effective in increasing reclamation capacity of dredged soil by reduction of self-weight consolidation completion time and increase of self-weight consolidation settlement.

  • In this study, the in-situ model test has been conducted to estimate and analyze consolidation behavior of the ground by using the miniature test that reconstructs economically geotechnical behavior of in-situ full scale structure. To analyze the relation of effective stress, void ratio and coefficient of permeability at the self-weight consolidation stage, the low stress seepage consolidation test has been conducted and the involution function of constitutive equation had been obtained from the result of the curve fitted seepage consolidation test. As a result of the numerical analysis that had been conducted on the representative section using a constitute equation, final settlement was similar to those of self-weight consolidation of the centrifugal model test. But it was more or less smaller. It seems that these trends are caused by the difference between estimated values.

  • The prediction of landfill settlement is very important for managing land properly, especially in small national land like Korea. It is difficult to express settlement using the consolidation theory because biochemical decomposition is main reason of settlement, and organic materials in landfill are decomposed far long time. In this study, LFG (Landfill Gas) generation characteristics are studied to find long-term settlement analysing model landfills. Two lysimeters are made; one is leachate recycled, and the other is not leachate recycled. The relationship between gas generation and settlement is analysed as a function of time. A mathematical gas generation model is suggested to predict long-term settlement due to biodegradation, and correction coefficient is recommended for long term settlement through model tests. The leachate recirculation system is more effective to accelerate landfill settlement. The appropriate coefficients of gas correction for non-recycled leachate model are 1.4 and 1.7 for recycled system from tests showing 22% of acceleration.
