  • In the present paper, flow characteristics and free surface waves generated by a submerged hydrofoil advancing with an uniform speed are calculated. Using a numerical method based on a MAC(Marker And Cell) method, the Navier-Stokes and the continuity equations are solved to simulate flow fields around the hydrofoil. Computations are carried out in a rectangular grid system in which grids are concentrated near the foil and the free surface to improve numerical accuracies. Viscous flow phenomenas including pressure distributions are computed. Moreover, the influences of submerged depths upon the generated wave profiles and the wave breaking phenomena are also investigated. Experiments are performed at the towing tank of Inha University to measure free surface wave elevations due to the advancing hydrofoil. The computational results are compared with the present and the other available experimental data to show the accuracy of the numerical method developed.

  • Since arterial disease in the upper extremity is less common than that in the lower extremity, experimental and numerical investigations related to upper extremity have been rarely performed. We created a three-dimensional model of the arteries, larger than approximately 1 mm, in a Korean adult's left hand (from brachial to digital arteries), from 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. For the first time, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic method was employed to investigate blood flow velocity, blood pressure variation, and wall shear stress (WSS) on this complicated artery system. Investigations were done on physiological blood flows near the branches of radial and deep palmar arch arteries, and ulnar and superficial palmar arch arteries. The flow is assumed to be laminar and the fluid is assumed to be Newtonian, with density and viscosity properties of plasma.

  • An experimental study has been performed to study the effect of the base slant angle of a 1/10 scale two-dimensional vehicle-like body on its wake flow including the recirculating region, where the simplified shape of the body has been originated from a profile of a domestic passenger car. In the case of a Reynolds number based on the length of the model R=7.96*10$^{5}$ , the surface pressure coefficient, the mean velocity and the turbulent stresses have been measured, while the flow visualization technique using wool tuft has been adopted as well. When the base slant angle of the model is 15.deg., the free stream flowing parallel to the slant is observed to be separated from the lower edge of the slant, thus forming the smallest recirculating region. When the base slant angles are 30.deg. and 45.deg., the free streams are separated from the upper edge of the slant and the sizes of the recirculating zones are observed to be almost the same as when the base slant angle is 0.deg. From these observations, it is conjectured that between the base slant angles of 15.deg. and 30.deg. there exists a critical angle at which the size of the recirculating region becomes minimum and as the slant angle becomes larger than this critical angle the separation line moves along the slant towards the rear edge of the roof. Through the flow visualization technique, the existence of the two counter-rotating bubbles in the recirculating region has been clearly observed and verified.

  • In this research, we investigated the hydrogen-gas filling characteristics of ultra-light composite tanks that have a plastic or aluminum liner inside the composite shell. The study was performed for different gas and tank temperatures. The temperature changes at various positions in the Type-4 tank during hydrogen-gas filling were monitored in order to understand the effects of the filling conditions. The results were compared with those obtained for a Type-3 tank. As the filling speed was increased, a quicker temperature rise was observed, and the temperature distribution over the entire region showed significant discrepancies.

  • This paper numerically examines, straight and twisted electrical heat trace installations for their anti-freezing effects on water inside a pipe. The unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with an energy equation were solved to compare the two installation methods. The heat conduction of the pipe with a heat source interacts with the natural convection of the water, and the conjugate heat transfer was considered using a commercial code (ANSYS-FLUENT) based on a SIMPLE-type algorithm. Numerical experiments, were done to investigate the isotherms and the vector fields in the water region to extract the evolutions of the minimum and maximum temperatures of the water inside the pipe. There was no substantial difference in the anti-freezing effects between the straight and twisted. Therefore, the straight installation is recommended after considering the damage and short circuit behavior of the electrical heat trace.

선원의 사용자에게 제공되는 최종방사능을 평가하는데 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.r의 분포를 보였다.cting the effect of earthquake on structures. • The local hydrulic characteristics in subchannels of 5$\times$5 nuclear fuel bundles with spacer grids were measured at upstream and downstream of the spacer grid for the investigation of the spacer grid effects on turbulent flow structure by using an LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimeter). The measured parameters are axial velocity and turbulent intensity, skewness factor, and flatness factor. Pressure drops were also measured to evaluate the loss coefficient for the spacer grid and the friction factor for rod bundles. From these data, it was found that the turbulent mixing and forced mixing occur up to $x/D^h=10$ and 20 from the spacer grid, respectively. The turbulence decay behind spacer grid behaves in the similar decay rate as turbulent flow through mesh grids or screens. Mixing factors useful in subchannel analysis code were correlated from the data and show the highest value near spacer grid and then have a stable values.

  • A potential-based panel method is presented for the analysis of a partially or supercavitating two-dimensional hydrofoil at a finite submergence beneath a free surface, treating without approximation the effects of the finite Froude number and the hydrostatic pressure. Free surface sources and normal dipoles are distributed on the foil and cavity surfaces, their strength being determined by satisfying the kinematic and dynamic boundary conditions on the foil-cavity boundary. The cavity surface is determined iteratively as a part of the solution. Numerical results show that the wave profile is altered significantly due to the presence of the cavity. The buoyancy effect due to the hydrostatic pressure, which has usually been neglected in most of the cavitating flow analysis, is found playing an important role, especially for the supercavitating hydrofoil; the gravity field increases the cavity size in shallow submergence, but decreases it when deeply submerged, while the lift reduces at all submergence depth.

  • The main purpose in having a control surface on a ship is to control the motion of it. It is the important element to determine the maneuvering characteristics of the ship. In this paper, the measured results has been compared with each other to predict the performance characteristics of flapped rudder's 2-dimensional section at $Re=3.0{\times}10^4$ using 2-frame grey level cross correlation PIV method. The side force of the rudder could be mainly improved by the lift force at 10 degrees angle of attack and the drag force at 20 degrees angle of attack. The separation point and boundary layer could be controlled by the change of the only flap's angle at 10 degrees angle of attack.

  • This paper describes the procedure to analyze the performance of the end-plated propeller(EPP) by a boundary integral method. The screw blade(SB) and end-plate(EP) are represented by a set of quadrilateral panels, where the source and normal dipole of uniform strength are distributed. The perturbation velocity potential, being the only unknown via the potential-based formulation, is determined by satisfying the flow tangency condition on the blade and the end-plate at the same time. The Kutta condition is satisfied through an iterative process by requiring the null pressure jump across the upper and lower sides of the trailing edges of both the SH and the EP. Sample calculations indicate that the EP increases the loading near the tip of the SB while spreading the trailing vortices along the trailing edge of the EP, thus avoiding the strong tip-vortex formation. Predicted performance of the EPP shows good correlations with the experimental results. The method is therefore considered applicable in designing and analyzing the EPP which may be an alternative for energy-saving propulsive devices.
