  • This study deals with the petrographic examination of aggregates(ASTM C 295) which is one of the methods to diagnose the quality of aggregates for concrete artifacts. A number of examinations including size and sieve analysis, test on the coating material, description of the weathering and contamination condition, petrographic description, and qualitative and quantitative analyses on the rocks and minerals potential to alkali-aggregates reactivity are carried out to examine the quality of aggregates. Petrographic description method examined on the fluvial aggregates from Maewhacheon A, B area, Uljin-gun, Kyungnam province shows that weathering grade ranges from F(fresh) to WS(slightly weathered) and coating material and contamination are not in a harmful condition. The weight percentage of the alkali-aggregates reactive minerals or structurally unstable rocks of the aggregates from study area covers 26% and 19% of all aggregates, respectively. So it is necessary to further identify their quality through the chemical(ASTM C 289) and mortar-bar method (ASTM C 227).

  • This study was intended to elucidate the petrography and geochemical characteristics of the Someori Basalt in the Udo monogenetic volcano, eastern Jeju Island. The Someori basalts consist of plagioclase, olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and ilmenite. The Someori basalts are plotted into subalkali rock series on the TAS diagram, and belong to tholeiitic basalts in the diagram of alkali index against to Al₂O₃ contents. The basalts belong to tholeiitic rock series, having normative quartz (less than 3.9%) + hypersthene + diopside.

  • The west stone pagoda of Gameunssji temple site (National Treasure No. 112) has been damaged mainly by fracture, exfoliation and granular disintegration. In this study, the source area of the rocks using the west stone pagoda was examined in terms of petrological feature, magnetic susceptibility, and ${\gamma}-ray$ spectrometer. The stones include abundant crystal fragments of biotite, quartz and feldspars in the fine-grained matrix; they are petrographically discriminated to vitric-crystal tuff or crystal tuff. Measured magnetic susceptibility values are of from 10 to 20 $({\times}10^{-3}\;SI\;unit)$. From the ${\gamma}-ray$ spectrometer measurement K, eU, and eTh contents of the stones are about 3%, 0 to 8ppm, and 9 to 18 ppm, respectively. These features are used as indicators to presume the source area of the stones. Comparing the petrographical and chemical characteristics between the stones of the west stone pagoda and the country rocks near the Gameunsaji temple site, it is suggested that the most similar country rock to the stones could be dacitic volcanic rocks of the Beomgokri group in the Waeup basin. The Beomgokri group is lithostratigraphically divided into Waeupri tuff, Yongdongri tuff and Beomgokri volcanic rocks. Among the three rocks, the crystal tuff of the Beomgokri volcanic rocks seems likely to have been the source rock of the stones of the west stone pagoda.

  • We attempted to show the evolution of the magma and the geochemical characteristics of dikes and dike swarms by using the petrographic and geochemical data from 287 dikes, SE Korea. The dikes can be divided into mafic, intermediate, and felsic dikes in the field. And each of them is subdivided into three groups, two groups, and two groups, respectively. The group (I) among the mafic dikes most pervasively occurs and are distributed in both sides of the Yeonil Tectonic Line (YIL), which petrographic and geochemical characteristics are the same. These facts thus, strongly support the results of the previous studies which showed that they were intruded contemporaneously and that YTL was a main tectonic line which restricted the crustal clockwise rotation during the Early Miocene. The geochemical characteristics are discriminated according to the seven groups divided petrographically. The mafic, intermediate and felsic dikes belong to basalt and basaltic andesite, andesite and facile, and rhyolite, respectively, and the magmas mostly belong to calc-alkaline series. The geochemical data indicate that there were the fractional crystallizations of olivine, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase in the mafic dikes. And the content of characteristic elements and tectonic discrimination diagrams show that the dikes were formed from the magma related to the subduction of plate and that the tectonic setting was related to orogenic volcanic arc.

  • In this study we propose that the ‘enclaves’ which occur in the granites should be translated into ‘Po-yu-am’in Korean. Also we suggest some criteria to discriminate the mafic microgranular enclaves (MME) of igneous origin from the xenoliths, which possibly come from the plutonic, volcanic and sedimentary country rocks. The color of the MME is gray green∼dark gray and the mineral grains are fine and equigranular. The MME are generally of ellipsoidal shape and can be easily found within the granites. They do not show any evidence of contact metamorphism by granite host. On the other hand. the xenoliths are generally of angular shape and are of the same mineral assemblage and texture as the country rocks around the granites. The distribution of the xenoliths is mostly concentrated along the intruding plane of the granites near the country rocks. The xenoliths were partly metamorphosed by the granite intrusion. The xenoliths from the plutonic rocks are easily distinguished from the MME in terms of their angular shape and coarser grain size, but they do not have any metamorphic mineral assemblage and texture. The xenoliths from the tuffaceous rocks show angular shape and porphyritic and pyroclastic textures. Large size xenoliths from the sedimentary rocks specifically preserve bedding structure which are indicative of the sedimentary strata. However, the sedimentary xenoliths of small size are often difficult to distinguish from the MME. Metamorphic minerals and texture are a useful key to discriminate the small-sized sedimentary xenoliths from the MME. In summary the xenoliths in the granites can be megascopic ally distinguished from the MME by comparing their color, shape, grain size and remnant original structure like bedding. Additionally the metamorphic mineral assemblage and texture are microscopic discriminators between the xenoliths and the MME in the granites.

  • This paper reports the results about the petrography and mineral chemistry of 13 representative dredged basaltic rocks from the western Caroline Ridge (WCR) and Yap Trench-Arc system, and provides the chemical and tectonic informations based on the compositions of clinopyroxene phenocrysts. Compositions of olivine phenocrysts in some analyzed samples are Fo$_{86-80}$. Plagioclase phenocrysts have variable compositions ranging from An$_{90}$ to An$_{55}$. The compositions of clinopyroxene phenocrysts vary according to geological environments; titansalite in atoll and guyot of WCR, diopside-augite in trough and bank of WCR, and endiopside in Yap Trench-Arc system. Application of the discrimination schemes proposed by Leterrier et al. (1982) suggests: (1) the samples from atoll-guyot belong to within plate alkali basalt, implying that western CR could be the continuation of eastern CR formed by hot spot magmatism, (2) the samples from the Yap Trench-Arc system with no present-day magmatism clearly indicate the occurrence of orogenic tholeiites presumably related to early island arc magmatisms in this area, however, (3) the samples from the bank and trough do not provide definitive informations, which might indicate the complexity of their origins.

  • Songaksan volcano, which occurs as a monogenetic volcano on the southwestern promontory of Hallasan shield volcano, is composed of tuff ring, cinder cone, lava pond and cinder conelet complex on wide basalt plateau. Except for an influx of external quartz xenocrysts in the tuff ring. Totally the volcano ranges from trachyandesite to trachybasalt in petrography and chemical compositions, which confirm the continuum between the evolved and primitive compositions widely occurring in the Jeju volcanic system. Chemical data for the volcano show quantitative compositional variation from the lower to the upper part of the volcanic sequences. The continuous compositional variations generally define a compositionally zoned magma storage. The chemical data suggest that the compositiona1 donations might have resulted from the fractional crystallization of a parental alkali magma. As result, the Songaksan volcano initially tapped the lop of the zoned magma storage and subsequently erupted successively more primitive magma.

  • The preservation treatment for the outer rampart of Namhansanseong fortress is needed due to partial collapse and separation of stone materials. In this study, we investigated the petrological features of the stone materials used for the outer rampart and estimated their provenances through the geologic survey. Through the above study, the suitable replacement stone in the maintenance of outer rampart were suggested. The stone materials of the above outer rampart consist of the banded gneiss, augen gneiss, granitic gneiss and porphyroblastic gneiss. Among these four kinds of rocks, granitic gneiss is quantitatively the most abundant. Petrological comparisons between stone materials and rocks distributed around the fortress, lead to the conclusion that the above materials are likely to have been delivered from around the fortress. Judging from the results of the comparison on frequency of use and strength characteristics among the above rocks, the granitic gneiss is considered to be suitable for restoration of the outer rampart of the fortress.

  • To infer the provenance of raw iron materials utilized in iron production at the archaeological sites in Gyeongsang province, petrographic and geochemical analyses were conducted for smelting samples and major iron ores sourced from ore deposits. The smelting samples excavated from various iron archaeological sites were classified into different types according to their refining processes, such as iron bloom, iron bloom slag, pig iron, pig iron slag, forging iron flake, smithery iron, iron flake, and arrowhead. These samples exhibited discernable differences in their mineralogical components and texture. The enrichments of major elements such as aluminum and calcium in silicate minerals of the residual slags and the high contents of trace elements such as nickel and copper in some iron-making relics reflect the characteristics of raw iron ores, and thus can be regarded as potential indicators for inferring the provenance of source materials. In particular, the compositional ranges of Pb-Sr isotope ratios for the iron smelting samples were classified into three categories: 1) those exhibiting similar ratios to those of the raw iron ores, 2) those enriched in strontium isotope ratio, and 3) those enriched in both lead and strontium isotope ratios. The observed distinct Pb-Sr isotope characteristics in the iron smelting samples suggest the potential contribution of specific additives being introduced during the high-temperature refining process. These results provide a new perspective on the interpretation of the provenance study of the iron archaeological samples in Gyeongsang province, particularly in terms of the potential contribution of additives on the refining process.
