  • Mental arithmetic has recently gained a higher profile in primary school mathematics. The study aims to reflect didactical background of mental arithmetic in number and operations curriculum for primary school mathematics. In order to attain these purposes, the present paper describes the meaning of mathematical literacy and didactical background of mental arithmetic on which have been laid emphasis in relation to mathematical literacy in many countries. Also it shows current suggestions for mental arithmetic instruction in Everyday Mathematics Project in USA, Numeracy Number Project in Great Britain, TAL project based on Realistic Mathematics Education in the Netherlands, and mathe 2000 project in German in order to gain practical ideas for teaching mental arithmetic. Furthermore, it discusses mental strategies of students and didactical models for improving mental arithmetic instruction based on the results of many researches. Under these theoretical foundations, it is analyzed how mental arithmetic is developed in our number and operations curriculum, focused on mental strategies and didactical models. Finally, implications for improving our mental arithmetic instruction are discussed.

  • We investigated the flora of Ibamsan Mt. and Baekamsan Mt., and discuss here important vascular plants found on these mountains. We created a plant list using voucher specimens collected from Ibamsan Mt. and Baekamsan deposited at CNU. There are 769 taxa in Ibamsan Mt. and Baekamsan Mt., consisting of 116 families, 403 genera, 687 species, 16 subspecies, 58 varieties, and 8 forms. Twenty-four endemic plants of Korea were found, including Coreanomecon hylomeconoides Nakai and Eranthis byunsanensis B. Y. Sun. There are 15 rare plants on Ibamsan Mt. and Baekamsan as designated by the Korea Forest Service, including Iris koreana Nakai and Chamaegastrodia shikokiana Makino & F. Maek., as well as 14 red-list plants as designated by the Ministry of the Environment, including Lycoris chinensis var. sinuolata K. Tae & S. C. Ko ex K. Tae & S. C. Ko and Cymbidium macrorhizon Lindl. In total, there are 133 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants, including four level V taxa, such as Iris koreana Nakai; ten level IV taxa, such as Lindera sericea (Siebold & Zucc.) Blume; 28 level III taxa, such as Botrychium japonicum (Prantl) Underw.; 22 level II taxa, including Hylomecon vernalis Maxim.; and 69 level I taxa, including Dryopteris erythrosora (D. C. Eaton) Kuntze. There are 37 invasive plants, including Rumex acetosella L. and Symphyotrichum pilosum (Willd.) G. L. Nesom.

  • This study was conducted the vegetation clustering analysis for the 3 mountains of Mt. Bulam, Mt. Daemo, Mt. Bonghwa which were the urban forests of Seoul. Based on the results of the analysis related to the vegetation clustering, it was found that the clustering of Mt. Bulam consisted of pine trees(Pinus densiflora)-Mongolian oak(Quercus mongolica), Hornb eam(Carpinus laxiflora)-Pitch pine(P. rigida), oriental oak(Q. variabilis) - a wild pear tree(Sorbus alnifolia) while the clustering of Mt. Daemo consisted of Pitch pine-Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis), Poplar(Populus tomentig landulosa)- black birch(Betula davurica pall). Meanwhile, the clustering of Mt. Bonghwa consisted of pine trees-a wild pear tree Community and Sawtooth oak(Q. acutissima)-Cherry Blossoms(Prunus serrulata). In relation to the similarity index by region in Mt. Bulam, Mt. Daemo, and Mt. Bonghwa, the similarity index of Mt. Bulam and Mt. Daemo stood at as high as 0.634, suggesting the distribution of similar vegetation, and the dominance index of the Mt. Daemo region was found to be 0.166 which suggests the dominance of many species compared to other regions. In addition, the results of species diversity showed that Mt. Daemo had the highest stability, and the species diversity, maximum species diversity, evenness indices were highest in Mt. Bulam, followed by Mt. Bonghwa and Mt. Daemo. The dominance index was the lowest in Mt. Bulam, followed by Mt. Bonghwa and Mt. Daemo.

  • Yeasts isolated from wild flowers of Gyejoksan in Daejeon city, Oseosan in Chungchungnamdo, and Baekamsan in Jeollabukdo, Korea were identified by comparison of nucleotide sequences for PCR-amplified D1/D2 region of 26S rDNA or internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1 and 2 including 5.8S rDNA using BLAST. Twelve yeast strains of ten species and seventeen yeast strains of ten species were isolated from wild flowers of Gyejoksan and Oseosan, respectively. And thirty seven yeast strains of twenty four species were isolated from wild flowers of Baekamsan. Total thirty four yeast species were isolated from three different sample collection areas, but only nine species were overlapped from the at least two different sampling areas: Cryptococcus sp., Cryptococcus aureus, Cryptococcus flavescens, Cryptococcus flavus, Metschnikowia sp., Pseudozyma aphidis, Rhodotorula glutinis, Sporobolomyces carnicolor, and Sporobolomyces ruberrimus. Among them only Cryptococcus aureus was occurred from all three different collection sites. Other twenty five species were restricted to specific collection site suggesting that each area has distinctive yeast flora.

  • There are many discussions nowadays about utilizing smartphones to create a mobile computing educational environment. The purpose of this study is to develope an application which addresses the growing importance of mental arithmetic maps in lower elementary grades. Considering current theories on developmental characteristics for the target levels I decided that a gesture based input interface increase the users concentration and interest. Students using this application will learn and reinforce the basics of the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of natural numbers. By removing the limitations of time and space as afforded by the convenience of a smartphone and utilizing a gesture based input interface we can combine an application which increases users mental arithmetic speed and precision with the enjoyment of a game.
