The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of alcohol use, depression, and self-esteem on suicidal ideation of older adults. Community-dwelling older adults aged 65 years and older were recruited from three welfare centers. A total of 245 older adults was assessed with the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test-Korean (AUDIT-K), Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form-Korea Version (GDSSF-K), Self-Esteem Scale (SES), and Scale for Suicidal Ideation (SSI). Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were performed using the SPSS WIN 19.0 program. Higher depression, lower self-esteem, no religion, and poorly perceived health were statistically significant determinants of higher level of suicidal ideation in older adults. To prevent or reduce suicidal ideation of older adults, health care providers should consider the determinants identified in this study.

Purpose : Despite of development of neonatal intensive care, infections, especially catheter-related infection, have been a major problem in newborns on intensive care. Catheter-related infection is closely related to skin colonization so that skin disinfection is crucial to protect newborns from the infection. Cotton balls of seventy percent alcohol made by hospital frequently open to air so that composition of alcohol may be easily evaporated. We hypothesized that 10% povidone would have better disinfection compared to 70% alcohol and normal saline. Methods : The effect of skin disinfection was evaluated in newborn infants who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit(NICU) of Hanyang University Kuri Hospital by a skin swab culture before and after disinfectant exposure. Before skin disinfective preparation, the peripheral intravenous catheter insertion sites were swabbed for culture with sterile cotton moistened with normal saline. Cotton balls of 70% alcohol(Alcohol group, n=20) or 10% povidone and 70% alcohol(povidone group, n=20) were randomly selected. Normal saline swabs were used for controls(n=10). After swabbing, the skin swab culture was done on same sites with same procedure. Results : Before skin disinfection, culture-positivity was shown in 9 of 20 leases of alcohol and povidone groups, respectively and in 8 of 10 cases of the controls. After skin disinfection, culture-positivity was still shown in 3 of 9 cases of the Alcohol group, in 2 of 9 of the Povidone group, and in 6 of 8 cases of the controls. Disinfective effect was significantly different among the 3 groups(p=0.0387). The povidone group had significantly better disinfection than the controls(p=0.0156), but the alcohol group was not significantly different from the controls. Conclusion : The cotton balls of povidone had similar effect of disinfection compared to those of alcohol, but better disinfection than the controls. A disinfective effect of the cotton balls of alcohol was not, however, significantly different from the controls. We suggest that purity of alcohol, quality control of cotton balls of alcohol, and disinfection method should be reevaluated.

We synthesized (C10H8N2H)2Cr2O7, The structure of the product was characterized with FT-IR(infrared) and elemental analysis. The oxidation of benzyl alcohol by (C10H8N2H)2Cr2O7 in organic solvents showed that the reactivity increased with the increase of the dielectric constant. The oxidation of alcohols was examined by (C10H8N2H)2Cr2O7 in DMF, acetone. As a resuit, (C10H8N2H)2Cr2O7 was found as efficicent oxidizing agent that converted benzyl alcohol, allyl alcohol, primary alcohol and secondary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones(65%~95%). The selective oxidation of alcohols was also examined by (C10H8N2H)2Cr2O7 in DMF, acetone. (C10H8N2H)2Cr2O7 was selective oxidizing agent(15%~95%) of benzyl alcohol, allyl alcohol and primary alcohol in the presence of secondary ones. In the presence of DMF solvent with acidic catalyst such as H2SO4. (C10H8N2H)2Cr2O7 oxidized benzyl alcohol(H) and its derivatives. The Hammett reaction constant(ρ) was -0.69(308K). The observed experimental data were used to rationalize the hydride ion transfer in the rate determining step.

The rates of solvolysis of $cis-[Co(en)_2Cl_2]^+$ complex have been investigated using spectrophotometric method at various pressures up to 1500 bar in several binary-aqueous mixtures(water-methyl alcohol, water-acetone, water-isopropyl alcohol and water-ethylene glycol). The activation volumes obtained from the pressure effect on rate constants were 1.13∼4.44 cm3mole-1 for methyl alcohol, 1.13∼3.59$cm^3mole^{-1}$ for acetone, 0.82∼3.44$cm^3mole^{-1}$ for isopropyl alcohol and 1.13∼2.68cm3mole-1 for ethylene glycol. In case of water-methyl alcohol, in addition to, the rates of solvolysis of this complex were determined in the presence of Fe(Ⅱ) ion and the activation volumes were -0.56∼1.59cm3mole$^{-1}$. The rates of solvolysis of this complex were analyzed by comparing with the results obtained from activation volumes and free energy cycle.
This study investigated whether a song psychotherapy based on the change stages of alcohol addiction impacted the change readiness of alcoholics. The song psychotherapy intervention consists of six activities (listening to a song, singing, songwriting, song sharing, lyrics analysis, and discussion and analysis of a song), which considers the change stages of alcohol addiction. A total of 64 inpatients diagnosed with alcoholism were randomly assigned to either the control (n = 33) or experimental group (n = 31). The experimental group took part in the intervention program for 45 minutes twice a week for 6 weeks (total of 12 sessions). The intervention effect was evaluated with SOCRATES-K. The results showed that the SOCRATES-K score significantly increased by 14.6% (p < .001) for the experimental group, whereas it remained almost unchanged (0.8% increase, p = .141) in the control group. For subcategory scales, the experimental group showed the highest increase in the ambivalence factor, followed by the recognition and taking-steps factors. Meanwhile, no significant changes in all three scales were found in the control group. Therefore, the song psychotherapy intervention based on the change stages of alcohol addiction was found to significantly increase the change readiness of alcoholics.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the alcohol volume consumed and alcohol dependancy according to multiple rounds of drinking. Sectional data collected in 2012 as part of an International Alcohol Control Study were used, and 855 of 1,789 drinker aged 19 to 64 were conducted. The proportion of multiple rounds drinking were significantly higher in males(χ²=37.607, p<.001), students(χ²=52.466, p<.001), single(χ²=34.205, p<.001), smoking experience and stressed(χ²=40,09, p<.001; χ²=21.66, p<.001) among drinkers. In particular, the alcohol volume consumed of unmarried people, smokers, and stress groups were significantly higher than married people, non-smokers and no-stress group. The highest alcohol intake in the first, 2nd and third rounds was found in bars in the liquor trade (F=67.8g, p<0.001). The total alcohol intake increased as the number of rounds increased (F=209.993, p=0.001) and the number of drinkers who tested positive for alcohol dependency increased, using the tests RAPS4 and DSM-IV(F=129.836, p<0.001; F=94.669, p<0.001). The OR of alcohol dependancy in males was 2.3(95% CI: 1.745-3.057), unemployed was 3.2(95% CI: 1.053-9.838), smokers was 3.9(95% CI: 1.230-12.292), and stress group was 2.1(95% CI: 1.561-2.768) compared to females, employed, non-smokers, and no-stress group respectively. In conclusion, it suggests that those consuming multiple rounds drinking can become more vulnerable to alcohol harms due to its relation to smoking, stress and increased dependence on alcohol.
The experiments have been performed to obtain zinc complex compound with smaller particle sizes, which is used as a charge control agent in manufacturing toner. Metallic salts and polyhydric alcohols have been studied to investigate their effects on the formation and the triboelectric charge of zinc complex-compound particle with different sizes. Reactants such as zinc chloride and 3,5-di-tert.-butyl salicylic acid have been used to form the complex compound. Polyethylene glycol (PEG-300), glycerin and ethylene glycol have been added into the zinc chloride solution beforehand to lower the reaction rate in the formation of zinc complex-compound. Aluminium(III) chloride has been mixed in the zinc chloride solution beforehand to restrain the particle size from growing. When PEG-300 and aluminium(III) chloride are used to lower the reaction rate and to restrain the particle size from growing, the average particle size of zinc complex compound decreases from $5.28{\mu}m$ to $2.33{\mu}m$, which was 44.1% of $5.28{\mu}m$.
Onions are considered to be a promising source of the alcoholic drink because they are rich in sugar, amino acids and various nutrients. To isolate strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae producing ethanol of higher concentration, 19 strains were subjected to screening. Among them, the strain producing the highest concentration of ethanol was OJ-8 strain. Onion's oder was effectively removed by treatment for 30 min with 10% (w/v) charcoal against medium and then heat treatment of onion extract for 40 min at $100^{\circ}C$. The optimum conditions for alcoholic fermentation was investigated in medium containing the onion extract. The optimal conditions for ethanol production was obtained by standing culture for 5 days at $25^{\circ}C$ with 5% inoculum volume.
