  • The buffer is a key component of an engineered barrier system that safeguards the disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Buffers are located between disposal canisters and host rock, and they can restrain the release of radionuclides and protect canisters from the inflow of ground water. Since considerable heat is released from a disposal canister to the surrounding buffer, the thermal conductivity of the buffer is a very important parameter in the entire disposal safety. For this reason, a lot of research has been conducted on thermal conductivity prediction models that consider various factors. In this study, the thermal conductivity of a buffer is estimated using the machine learning methods of: linear regression, decision tree, support vector machine (SVM), ensemble, Gaussian process regression (GPR), neural network, deep belief network, and genetic programming. In the results, the machine learning methods such as ensemble, genetic programming, SVM with cubic parameter, and GPR showed better performance compared with the regression model, with the ensemble with XGBoost and Gaussian process regression models showing best performance.

  • The chloride diffusion coefficient is a critical indicator for assessing the durability of concrete marine substructures. This study develops a prediction model for the chloride diffusion coefficient using data from concrete bridges located in marine exposure zones (atmospheric, splash, tidal), an aspect that has not been considered in previous studies. Chloride profile data obtained from these bridge substructures were utilized. After data preprocessing, machine learning models, including Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), were optimized through hyperparameter tuning. The performance of these models was developed and compared under three different variable sets. The first model uses six variables: water-to-binder (W/B) ratio, cement type, coarse aggregate volume ratio, service life, strength, and exposure environment. The second model excludes the exposure environment, using only the remaining five variables. The third model relies on just three variables: service life, strength, and exposure environment factors that can be obtained from precision safety diagnostics. The results indicate that including the exposure environment significantly enhances model performance for predicting the chloride diffusion coefficient in concrete bridges in marine environments. Additionally, the three variable model demonstrates that effective predictions can be made using only data from precision safety diagnostics.

  • In this paper, we propose a machine learning model that can prevent fraudulent transactions in advance and interpret them using the XAI approach. For the experiment, we collected a real data set of 12,258 mobile phone sales posts from Joonggonara, a major domestic online C2C resale trading platform. Characteristics of the text corresponding to the post body were extracted using Doc2vec, dimensionality was reduced through PCA, and various derived variables were created based on previous research. To mitigate the data imbalance problem in the preprocessing stage, a complex sampling method that combines oversampling and undersampling was applied. Then, various machine learning models were built to detect fraudulent postings. As a result of the analysis, LightGBM showed the best performance compared to other machine learning models. And as a result of SHAP, if the price is unreasonably low compared to the market price and if there is no indication of the transaction area, there was a high probability that it was a fraudulent post. Also, high price, no safe transaction, the more the courier transaction, and the higher the ratio of 0 in the price also led to fraud.

  • Fatigue lowers an individual's ability and makes it difficult to perform work. As fatigue accumulates, concentration decreases and thus the possibility of causing a safety accident increases. Awareness of fatigue is subjective, but it is necessary to quantitatively measure the level of fatigue in the actual field. In previous studies, it was proposed to measure the level of fatigue by expert judgment by adding objective indicators such as bio-signal analysis to subjective evaluations such as multidisciplinary fatigue scales. However this method is difficult to evaluate fatigue in real time in daily life. This paper is a study on the fatigue classification model that determines the fatigue level of workers in real time using speech data recorded in the field. Machine learning models such as logistic classification, support vector machine, and random forest are trained using speech data collected in the field. The performance evaluation showed good performance with accuracy of 0.677 to 0.758, of which logistic classification showed the best performance. From the experimental results, it can be seen that it is possible to classify the fatigue level using speech signals.

  • Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have a longer lifespan, higher energy density, and lower self-discharge rates than other batteries, therefore, they are preferred as an Energy Storage System (ESS). However, during years 2017-2019, 28 ESS fire accidents occurred in Korea, and accurate capacity estimation of LIB is essential to ensure safety and reliability during operations. In this study, data-driven modeling that predicts capacity changes according to the charging cycle of LIB was conducted, and developed models were compared their performance for the selection of the optimal machine learning model, which includes the Decision Tree, Ensemble Learning Method, Support Vector Regression, and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). For model training, lithium battery test data provided by NASA was used, and GPR showed the best prediction performance. Based on this study, we will develop an enhanced LIB capacity prediction and remaining useful life estimation model through additional data training, and improve the performance of anomaly detection and monitoring during operations, enabling safe and stable ESS operations.

  • In the automotive industry, the development of automobiles to meet safety requirements is becoming increasingly complex. This is because quality evaluation agencies in each country are continually strengthening new safety standards for vehicles. Among these various requirements, collision safety must be satisfied by controlling airbags, seat belts, etc., and can be defined as post-crash safety. Apart from this safety system, the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) use advanced detection sensors, GPS, communication, and video equipment to detect the hazard and notify driver before the collision. However, research to improve passenger safety in case of an accident by using the sensor of active safety represented by ADAS in the existing passive safety is limited to the level that utilizes the sudden braking level of the FCA (Forward Collision-avoidance Assist) system. Therefore, this study aims to develop logic that can improve passenger protection in case of an accident by using ADAS information and driving information secured before a collision. The proposed logic was constructed based on LSTM deep learning techniques and trained using crash test data.

  • Recently, there have been various researches on efficient and automatic analysis on urban environment methods that utilize the computer vision and machine learning technology. Among many new analyses, urban safety analysis has received a major attention. In order to predict more accurately on safety score and reflect the human visual perception, it is necessary to consider the generic and local information that are most important to human perception. In this paper, we use Double-column Convolutional Neural network consisting of generic and local columns for the prediction of urban safety. The input of generic and local column used re-sized and random cropped images from original images, respectively. In addition, a new learning method is proposed to solve the problem of over-fitting in a particular column in the learning process. For the performance comparison of our Double-column Convolutional Neural Network, we compare two Support Vector Regression and three Convolutional Neural Network models using Root Mean Square Error and correlation analysis. Our experimental results demonstrate that our Double-column Convolutional Neural Network model show the best performance with Root Mean Square Error of 0.7432 and Pearson/Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.853/0.840.

  • As smart mobile devices having touchscreens are growingly deployed, a pattern lock system, which is one of the graphical password systems, has become a major authentication mechanism. However, a user's unlocking behaviour leaves smudges on a touchscreen and they are vulnerable to the so-called smudge attacks. Smudges can help an adversary guess a secret pattern correctly. Several advanced pattern lock systems, such as TinyLock, have been developed to resist the smudge attacks. In this paper, we study an automated smudge attack that employs machine learning techniques and its effectiveness in comparison to the human-only smudge attacks. We also compare Android pattern lock and TinyLock schemes in terms of security. Our study shows that the automated smudge attacks are significantly advanced to the human-only attacks with regard to a success ratio, and though the TinyLock system is more secure than the Android pattern lock system.

  • Recently, policies and research to prevent increasing construction accidents have been actively conducted in the domestic construction industry. In previous studies, the prediction model developed to prevent construction accidents mainly used only structured data, so various characteristics of construction sites are not sufficiently considered. Therefore, in this study, we developed a machine learning-based construction accident prediction model that enables the characteristics of construction sites to be considered sufficiently by using both structured and text-type unstructured data. In this study, 6,826 cases of construction accident data were collected from the Construction Safety Management Integrated Information (CSI) for machine learning. The Decision forest algorithm and the BERT language model were used to train structured and unstructured data respectively. As a result of analysis using both types of data, it was confirmed that the prediction accuracy was 95.41 %, which is improved by about 20 % compared to the case of using only structured data. Conclusively, the performance of the predictive model was effectively improved by using the unstructured data together, and construction accidents can be expected to be reduced through more accurate prediction.

  • Moving toward an aged society, traffic accidents involving elderly drivers have also attracted broader public attention. A rapid increase of senior involvement in crashes calls for developing appropriate crash-severity prediction models specific to senior drivers. In that regard, this study leverages machine learning (ML) algorithms so as to predict the severity of vehicle-pedestrian collisions induced by elderly drivers. Specifically, four ML algorithms (i.e., Logistic model, K-nearest Neighbor (KNN), Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Machine (SVM)) have been developed and compared. Our results show that Logistic model and SVM have outperformed their rivals in terms of the overall prediction accuracy, while precision measure exhibits in favor of RF. We also clarify that driver education and technology development would be effective countermeasures against severity risks of senior driver-induced collisions. These allow us to support informed decision making for policymakers to enhance public safety.
