  • In physical modeling of plucked string instruments, the vibration of a string is typically simulated by the linear system. Currently the Digital Waveguides of J.O.Smith[1] are widely used to get a high quality sound of the plucked string instrument. He used the wave equation to derive the Digital Waveguides and emphasized the time variable. In this thesis, new model of plucked string is proposed to improve the sound quality emphasizing the spatial variable of the wave equation. In our model, we used the fixed sampling interval which is not dependent on the speed of the wave. So we could get more detailed description of wave movement by the time variable. As a result, the new model could produce a higher quality sound of plucked string instrument.

  • From the K-Ar age determinations for the clay deposits and their surrounded rocks in southwest Korea, the ages of the ore formation in all clay deposits fall in very narrow range from 78.1 to 81.4 Ma. K-Ar ages of clay deposits are slightly younger than those of the Cretaceous volcanic rocks (Hwangsan Formation, 81.4 to 86.4 Ma) and are slightly older than those of the Cretaceous granitic rocks (77.1 to 81.5 Ma). These results indicate that clay deposits were formed with genetical relation to late Cretaceous felsic magmatism. Weolgagsan granite, which has been previously considered to be Cretaceous, is proved to be formed its age in Jurassic (140.9 and 144.8 Ma). The close relationships of K-Ar ages between the clay deposits and Cretaceous granitic rocks suggest that the clay deposits were formed during the hydrothermal alterations caused by the thermal effects (hydrothermal circulation) of the granitic intrusions rather than by the hydrothermal activities associated with volcanic activities.

  • This paper deals with the implementation of a high-quality audio system for karaoke. For improving the key/tempo changes performance, we separated the audio into many musical instrument channels. By separating musical instrument channels, high-quality key/tempo changes can be achieved and we confirmed this using the cross-correlation distribution and the MOS evaluation. The improved audio system was implemented using the TMS320C6747 DSP with fixed/floating-point operations. The implemented audio system can perform the multi-channel WMA decoding, the MP3 encoding/decoding, the wav playing, the EQ, and the key/tempo changes in real time. The WMA channels used for processing the separated instrument channels. The audio system includs the MP3 encoding/decoding function for playing and recording and the wav channel for the effect sound.

  • The Gyeongsang Arc is the most notable of the Korea Arc that is composed of several volcanic arcs trending to NE-SW direction in the Korean peninsula. The Hayang Group has many volcanogenic interbeds of lava flows by alkaline or calc-alkaline basaltic volcanisms during early Cretaceous. Late Cretaceous calc-alkaline andesitic and rhyolitic volcanisms reconstructed the Gyeongsang Arc that consist of thick volcanic strata on the Hayang Group in The Gyeongsang Basin. The volcanisms characterize first eruptions of basaltic and andesitic lavas with small pyroclastics, and continue later eruptions of dacitic and rhyolitic ash-fall and voluminous ash-flow with some calderas and then domes and dykes. During the Early Cretaceous (about 120 Ma), oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate to NNW from N direction results in sinistral strike-slip faults to open a pull-apart basin in back-arc area of the Gyeongsang Arc, in which erupted lava flows from generation of magma by a decrease in lithostatic pressure. Therefore the Gyeongsang Basin is interpreted into back-arc basin reconstructed by a continental rifting. Arc volcanism began in about 100 Ma with exaggeration of the back-arc basin in the Gyeongsang, and then changed violently to construct volcanic arcs. During the Late Cretaceous (about 90 Ma), orthogonal subduction of the Izanagi plate to NW from NNW direction ceased development of the basin to prolong violent volcanisms.

  • Background: There is a need for index research on music therapy activities for the elderly in Korea. Purposes: This study aims to suggest application standards in music therapy by surveying the elderly's preference for music therapy activities. Methods: A survey of music-related actions and musical instrument preferences was conducted with 91 older people in 4 nursing homes. The questionnaire consisted of information about music activities, genres of songs, types of instruments, methods of movement, and purpose of participation in activities. Results: The preference for musical activities was for playing musical instruments, followed by singing, music appreciation, flowing movements, and concert-oriented activities. Music genres appeared in the order of popular songs, folk songs, and children's songs. The instrument type preferred drums, followed by shakers and woodblocks. As a movement application method, movement using themes is preferred. Participating in music activities was leisure, followed by stress relief and emotional cultivation. Conclusion: When applying music therapy to the elderly, it predicted that the treatment effect would be high when the elderly focus on playing musical instruments and singing activities preferred by the elderly. Music genres selected from popular music and folk songs, and musical instruments are drums and shakers. Therefore, if you use it, you can expect a more significant effect.

  • In this paper, musical tone, especially instrument tones are synthesized using nonlinear distortion technique. Nonlinear distortion is very simple but versatile method when you synthesize musical instrument tones. It basically consists of one sine oscillator and amplifier which makes distortion to Input wave. Output wave has many harmonics that can be controlled by varying shaping function, which is the transfer function of nonlinear amplifier. Shaping function Is obtained from the analyzed harmonic amplitude data. Given harmonics amplitudes, Chebyshev polynomial is used to produce the shaping function that exactly makes the given harmonics at steady state. We contructed non -real time nonlinear distortion synthesizer program running at IBM-PC. To quantify the satis faction of synthesised tones, listening test is carried out, and the result is presented.

  • This paper presents the digital music sound DSP by using ADPCM and Perceptual Transform Corder in MPEG to compress sound data and minimize the quantization noise for musical instrument. these method are utilized to develop algorithm of equal power density envelope. And these results are applied to examine the specific characteristics of musical instrument and determine the compression method. The design of new RISC DSP which generates 32 voices of musical instrument simultaneously and the coding of 200 musical instrument sound data in 1MByte memory shows that these algorithm is very useful to regenerate musical sound by using the minimum size of memory.
