  • Acetone is a widely used Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) in industries and laboratories. However, acetone affects human health adversely and causes fires and explosions. Early acetone detection and improved personnel training in safety and emergency management are necessary to prevent acetone-related accidents. The multi-VOC acetone detectors used currently have a sensitivity and selectivity limit. In this study, we discovered that Pt-loaded iron oxide (a metal oxide semiconductor) conversely, has high detection and selectivity for very low-levels of acetone gas. The loaded Pt catalyzes the reaction between the sensing materials' surface and the oxygen molecules in the air; this optimizes acetone detection and can decrease acetone-related illnesses, fires and explosions.

  • After preparing extracts from fresh Styela plicata using methanol, ethanol, acetone, and water, the antioxidant and tumor necrosis factor $(TNF)-{\alpha}$ inducing ability of the extracts were evaluated. Most of the extracts showed more than 50% inhibitory activity against malonedialdehyde formation, and methanol extract exhibited the highest activity with values of 59.3%. The water and acetone extracts contained glutathione contents of 18.5 and $12.3\;{\mu}M$, respectively, however, these were not detected in the other extracts. $TNF-{\alpha}$ inducing abilities of the extracts were determined with RAW 264.7 cells. The water extract increased $TNF-{\alpha}$ production with correlation to increase of the added amount. However, the other extracts could not induce $TNF-{\alpha}$ production in RAW 264.7 cells. The results indicated that the antioxidant activities of S. plicata extracts were different depending on extracting solvents, and the water extract showed significant $TNF-{\alpha}$ inducing activity.

  • A simple analytical method to quantify formaldehyde in water at lower levels (${\mu}g/L$) was developed using a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and acetylacetone as a derivative reagent. Unlike conventional methods, no extraction and/or concentration were required. The derivative reagent was added into samples and reacted for 30 minutes at $80^{\circ}C$ prior to the analysis of formaldehyde using HPLC. The method detection limit and the limit of quantification for this method were 1.6 and $5.0{\mu}g/L$, respectively. This method also achieved high precision (0.6-3.0%) and accuracy (91.6-106.3%). The recovery rates for various environmental samples ranged from 92.0 to 115.2%.

  • PVA gel beads were made by immobilization of thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA) and trioctylphoshineoxide (TOPO) with poly vinyl alcohol (PVA). The prepared PVA gel beads were used for the removal of $Cu^{2+}$ from aqueous solution. The removal characteristics of $Cu^{2+}$ by PVA gel beads was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The maximum removal capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm equation was 9.59 mg/g. The optimal pH was in the range of 3.5~6. Even when the PVA gel beads were reused 5 times, the leakage of extractant and the damage of PVA gel beads was not observed.

  • The counter-diffusion of aromatic compounds such as coronene and tetra-phenylporphine by injection of acetone or tetra-phenylporphine solution was studied on aluminas and silica-alumina used widely as catalysts support. The counter-diffusivity was determined from simulation results by using the counter-diffusion model employing ideal adsorbed solution theory. The counter-diffusivities of aromatic compounds in the catalyst supports were ranged in ${\sim}10^{-15}m^2/sec$ in the desorption process by the injection of excess acetone. In the counter-diffusion process with tetra-phenylporphine solution which have similar concentration with adsorption solution, the counter-diffusivities of coronene were also ${\sim}10^{-15}m^2/sec$, and that of tetra-phenylporphine into pores were determined as ${\sim}10^{-11}m^2/sec$. The counter-diffusivities of coronene desobed from the adsorbent were significantly redyced in comparison with the effective diffusivities when there is counter-diffusion flux. The values mainly depended on the existence of counter-diffusion flux, but not concerned with the species and amount of desorbates.

  • The brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are one of the unregulated pollutants in Korea, which is recently highlighted the new pollutants of environmental contamination. In this study, the previous research papers related the BFRs were surveyed, and the analytical methods of BFRs were established. The results are followed; The 40 kinds of PBDEs standards were used to establish the analytical methods to perform the experiments of recoveries and detection limits in water and soil. The detection limits of PBDEs using GC/MS represented 5.0~10.0 pg/L for water and 0.5~2.0 ng/g for soil samples. The average recoveries of water samples were 89~98% with ethylacetate, n-hexane and dichloromethane, and 89~103% in combined solvent with n-hexane and acetone. In soxhlet extraction, the higher recoveries obtained the acetone:n-hexane(1:1) comparing with acetone:dichloromethane(1:1).

  • In this study, the solubilities of a pharmaceutical compound, nifedipine, in three mixed solvents were determined. In addition, the nifedipine, that was dissolved in solvents (acetone, DMF, methylene chloride), was recrystallized using antisolvents (water, hexane, carbon dioxide) The external shape, size, and melting point of the crystallized nifedipine were measured. As the mixed solvents, acetone+water, DMF+water, and methylene chloride+hexane were used, and the solubility of nifedipine decreased with increasing antisolvent concentrations in the mixtures. In case of acetone+water, the solubility maximum was observed due to the density anomaly of the mixture, and this phenomenon was not observed in other systems. The crystallized nifedipine particles exhibited the bladed, equant, and prismatic habits, and the particles size was significantly reduced compared to the raw material. The average particle size of raw nifedipine was 337 ㎛, and the size of crystallized particles was in the range of 11.6~69.8 ㎛. All the crystallized nifedipine particles had the same thermal behavior and this result was not influenced by the change of solvent and antisolvent.

  • The rates of solvolysis of $cis-[Co(en)_2Cl_2]^+$ complex have been investigated using spectrophotometric method at various pressures up to 1500 bar in several binary-aqueous mixtures(water-methyl alcohol, water-acetone, water-isopropyl alcohol and water-ethylene glycol). The activation volumes obtained from the pressure effect on rate constants were 1.13∼4.44 cm3mole-1 for methyl alcohol, 1.13∼3.59$cm^3mole^{-1}$ for acetone, 0.82∼3.44$cm^3mole^{-1}$ for isopropyl alcohol and 1.13∼2.68cm3mole-1 for ethylene glycol. In case of water-methyl alcohol, in addition to, the rates of solvolysis of this complex were determined in the presence of Fe(Ⅱ) ion and the activation volumes were -0.56∼1.59cm3mole$^{-1}$. The rates of solvolysis of this complex were analyzed by comparing with the results obtained from activation volumes and free energy cycle.

  • The influnces of 9 kinds of solvents on the toxicities against several insect species, phytotoxicity and solubility of compounds were evaluated by means of leaf dipping and spray methods. In case of the spray application, density and vapor pressure seemed to be a contributing factor to lethal toxicity against brown planthopper and diamond-back moth, respectively; the bigger the property of density and the smaller the vapor pressure gave the stronger toxicity. It appeared that the toxicity of solvents was not correlated with anyone of physical properties such as boiling point, dipole moment, dielectric constant, surface tension and viscosity. Spray treatment gave more toxicity to insects than leaf dipping treatment. Although dielectric constant and dipole moment seemed to be contributing factors to phytotoxic damage to rice seedling and bean plants, respectively, no general correlation between phytoxicity and the other physical properties was found. Leaf dipping application caused stronger phytotoxicity than spray application. It is concluded that 5% acetone solution may be most suitable to test chemicals because of its favorable solubility of compounds, lower toxicity to insects, and lower phytotoxicity.
