  • This study investigated age and sex differences in aggression by quality of peer relationships in 331 adolescents, 11 or 14 years of age in 6 public schools in Seoul. They completed 2 self-reported questionnaires. All subjects were divided into 3 groups by level of aggression. Highly aggressive adolescents had significant vulnerability in peer relationships as contrasted with mid- and low- aggressive groups. They reported more egocentricity, conflict, rejection, and less emotional support from peers. Fourteen-year-old reported more intimacy, more emotional support, and less physical aggression than 11-year-olds. Boys showed much more egocentricity and perceived more rejection than girls. Boys displayed more physical aggression to persons and girls showed more angry expressions. The findings suggest that various intervention programs should be provided for peer relationships of high aggressive adolescents.

  • The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of school forests on the cognition and mental health of elementary school students. Data were obtained through the surveys of sixth graders in an elementary school in Seoul that took part in the School Forest Project run by Korea Post, the Korea Forest Welfare Institute, and the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. Students were surveyed before and after the creation of green spaces in their schools, and changes in their environmental sensitivity, attitude toward forests, depression, anxiety, and aggression were analyzed. The findings indicated that the creation of green spaces showed significant effects on the students in terms of encouraging them to strengthen their environmental sensitivity, helping them develop more positive attitudes toward forests, and reducing anxiety and physical aggression, which are the subfactors of aggressive behavior. In other words, creating school forests had positive effects on cognition and mental health, reduced bad behavior, and improved attitudes toward nature in children. The findings of this study are significant in that they reinforce the requirement of school forests by indicating the positive effects of school forests on children's cognition and mental health.

  • The purpose of this paper was to verify the mediated effect of grit in the relationship with the effect of youth social support on aggression. To this end, data from the 2018 Children and Youth Panel (KCYPS) survey were used, and 2,590 first-year middle school students were selected and analyzed. As for the analysis method, Baron & Kenny's regression analysis and Sobel Test were performed. As a result of the main analysis, first, it was found that grit had a partial mediating effect in the effect of parental support, a sub-factor of social support of adolescents, on aggression. Second, it was found that grit had a partial mediating effect in the effect of friend support, a sub-factor of social support of adolescents, on aggression. Third, it was found that grit had a partial mediating effect in the effect of teacher support, a sub-factor of social support of adolescents, on aggression. Based on the above research results, various program development and policy alternatives that can reduce youth aggression and improve grit were suggested.

The subjects were 80 3rd & 6th grade boys selected from a public elementary school in Seoul. The subjects were interviewed individually. Following the presentation of each story, five questions were asked. A 2 x 2 Analysis of Variance was performed for each of the 5 dependent measures. Results showed (1) Aggressive boys were more likely to attribute a hostile intention to the behavior of peer. (2) Aggressive boys predicted their own response as more hostile and aggressive. (3) The 6th graders generated more alternative solutions than the 3rd graders. (4) Non significant results are not reported in the abstract. • This study aimed to verify the effects of parental chid-rearing attitudes on adolescents' aggressiveness and the mediation effects of peer attachment. To this end, the 7th year data (2016) (4th grade to the first year of high school) of Korea Children & Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) were used. The results of this study are as follows: First, the correlations between child-rearing attitudes, aggressiveness, and peer attachment variables were confirmed. Second, parental child-rearing attitudes significantly affected adolescents' aggressiveness. Third, peer attachment showed some mediation effects in terms of the effects of parental child-rearing attitudes on adolescents' aggressiveness. For the significance verification of the mediation effects, the Sobel test was carried out. The results of this study are meaningful as empirical foundation. Based on the study results, this study suggested the need of education programs for parents and peer attachment consolidation programs for adolescents in relation with social welfare mediation practice.
