  • In order to investigate the distribution of suspended particulate matter of the surface water in the South Sea of Korea in early winter, the cruise results during 2 to 8 December 2004 were analyzed in relation to the hydrography. The front was formed along the line connecting between Tsushima and Cheju Islands, which divided the water into two water masses; the coastal water with for temperature and for salinity, and the Tsushima Warm Current Water with high temperature and high salinity. In the coastal water the suspended particulte matter was 5.0-6.5 mg/l, while in the oceanic water suspended particulate matter was 4.5-5.0 mg/l. The coastal water showed higher mixing effects, compared to the oceanic area where vertical stratification was clearly formed. These indicate that the distribution of suspended particulate matter was affected by the stratification or mixing of the water column. Also it is suggested that the mixing effects of sea surface cooling and rind play an important role on the distribution of suspended particulate matter in the South Sea of Korea in winter time.

  • The annual variations of sea surface temperature (SST), air temperature (AT), and sea-air temperature separation (SST-AT) in the East Sea (Japan Sea) are studied by harmonic analysis of the monthly data in 2 by 2 degree rectangles. In the Tsushima Current region of the Japan Sea, the annual means of SST and AT are high due to warm water advection by the current, and the annual amplitudes of SST and AT are small because the annual variations of heat advection the the current and of the incoming solar radiation are almost out of phase each other. In summer the SST and the AT in the Japan Sea are almost the same, but in winter the SST is $6{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ higher than the AT. The physical processes responsible for the observed SST-AT in the Japan Sea and their consequences in the sea-air thermal interactions are discussed in this paper.

  • Temperature inversions are investigated by using the oceanographic data (1965-1979) obtained in the Southern Sea of Korea. The temperature inversions in winter occur about six times more frequently than those in sumner. In the west region of the Southern Sea, the inversions are found at any depth in winter. In the east region of the Southern Sea, however, they usually appear in surface layer in winter. Such inversion phenomena in winter can be explained by surface cooling effects associated with a net heat loss at the sea surface and a southward advection of surface cold water due to north-westerly monsoon. In summer the inversion layers are usually formed below the thermocline in the west region of the Southern Sea, and in surface layer in the east region. The former results from the mixing between the Tsushima Warm Current and the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water, and the latter is generated by an offshore flow of cold water near coast due to southwesterly wind.

  • Based on six specimens collected from eastern coast of Jeju Island, Korea, Istiblennius dussumieri is described as a new Korean record representing the northernmost occurrence of the species in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. The species is characterized by having a dark spot between first and third dorsal spines, branched orbital cirrus, and lacking nape cirri. A new Korean name, "Geom-eun-jeom-be-do-ra-chi" is proposed for the species.

  • This study is to analyze the influence of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) on the variation of sound speed in the southern part of the East Sea. Sound speed is calculated by method of Chen and Millero (1977:, based on the CTD data measured in June of 1996. Sound speed in the central part of the TWC is about $45ms^{-1}$ more fast than that in the other regions without the TWC. Sound speed minimum layer (SML) in the TWC region exists between loom and 341 m, while it exists between 260m and 290m in the non-TWC region. SML distributes along the path of TWC over continental shelf in the coastal waters of Japan.

  • Variation of the polar front in the East Sea is studied using temperature and dissolved oxygen data obtained from Japan Meteorological Agency from 1972 to 1999. Variation of the polar front in the East Sea has a close relation to the variation of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC). When the TWC spreads widely in the East Sea, polar front moves northward. The spatial variation of the polar front is greater in the southwestern area of the East Sea and the northern area of Tsugaru Strait where the variation of the TWC's distribution area is greater than those in others of the East Sea. Hence, in the southeastern area of the East Sea, that is, between near Noto peninsula and Tsugaru Strait, the spatial variation of the polar front is not so wide as in the southwestern area because the flow of TWC is stable.

  • Twently seven speices of marine bryozoans from Namhaedo Island and its adjacent waters were identified. Among them, Hippothoa distans is new to Korean fauna and seven species are added as new to Namhaedo Island fauna. Twenty three species of them have been found also in Chejudo Island waters, which is affected by the Tsushima Current. Ten species have been found in the East Sea which is affected by both the Tsushima Warm Current and the North Korea Cold Current. So it is clear that the Namhaedo Island sea area is influenced by both the Tsushima Warm Current and the North Korea Cold Current.

  • We carried oui a study on the marine environment and distribution of phytoplankton community, such as chlorophyll a, species composition, dominant species and standing crops in the Northern East China Sea during early summer of 2004. According to the analysis of a T-S diagram, three characteristics of water masses were identified. We classified them into the coastal water mass, the cold water mass and the oceanic water mass. The first was characterized by the low temperature and the low salinity originated from China territory, the secondary was characterized by the low temperature, the low salinity and the high density originated from bottom cold water of Yellow Sea, and the third was done by the high temperature and salinity originated from Tsushima warm current. The internal discontinuous layer among them was farmed at the intermediate depth (about $5{\sim}30m$ layer). And the thermal front by upwelling region between the cold water mass and Tsushima warm current appeared in the central parts of the South Sea of Korea. The Phytoplankton community in the surface and stratified layers was a total of 44 species belonging to 26 genera. Dominant species were Prorocentrum triestinum, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Skeletonema costatum & Leptocylindrus mediterraneus. Standing crops of phytoplankton in the surface layer fluctuated between $0.3{\times}10^3$ cells/L and $10.8{\times}10^3$ cells/L. Diatoms appeared mainly in the Tsushima warm current regions, and flagellates occurred in the frontal zone and the low salinity regions where was the transfer areas of Chinese continental coastal waters. Chlorophyll a concentration by controlled phytoflagellate ratio in the South Sea of Korea was high values in the frontal zone and sub-surface layer. It was high concentration in the upwelling and coastal waters regions, but low concentration in the Tsushima warm current regions. The Chl-a maximum layers appeared in the thermochline depth or sub-surface layer lower than thermocline. The phytoplankton production in the South Sea of Korea was controlled by the expanded coastal waters of Chinese Continent which include a high concentrations of nutrients.

  • We numerically studied tsunami propagation characteristics through Korean Straits based on nonlinear shallow water equation, a robust wave driver of the near field tsunamis. Tsunamis are presumed to be generated by the earthquake in Tsuhima-Koto fault line. The magnitude of earthquake is chosen to be 7.5 on Richter scale, which corresponds to most plausible one around Korean peninsula. It turns out that it takes only 60 minutes for leading waves to cross Korean straits, which supports recently raised concerns at warning system might be malfunctioned due to the lack of evacuation time. We also numerically obtained the probability of tsunami inundation of various levels, usually referred as tsunami hazard, along southern coastal area of Korean Peninsula based on simple seismological and Kajiura (1963)'s hydrodynamic model due to tsunami-generative earthquake in Tsuhima-Koto fault line. Using observed data at Akita and Fukaura during Okushiri tsunami in 1993, we verified probabilistic model of tsunami height proposed in this study. We believe this inundation probability of various levels to give valuable information for the amendment of current building code of coastal disaster prevention system to tame tsunami attack.
