  • The fish species composition and its seasonal variation of the middle East Sea of Korea were investigated from May 2004 to January 2005 using gill and set nets. A total of 59 species of fishes belonging to 31 families in 11 orders were identified in the gill and set nets; 33 species in 15 families and 6 orders were collected by the gill net, and 36 species in 26 families and 10 orders were collected by the set net. Among the fishes collected by gill net, the order Scorpaeniformes was dominant; the number of species as well as individuals was highest in summer; the biomass was highest in winter. However, in fishes collected by set net, the order Perciformes was dominant, the number of species was highest in autumn, the number of individuals was highest in spring, and the biomass was highest in winter. The fish composition of the middle East Sea differed considerably from that of the south East Sea, especially in the species composition of the order Scorpaeniformes and Pleuronectiformes. Principal component analyses for each net showed that the fish species composition depends on the kind of net used, even though the investigation was carried out in the same area and at the same time.

  • To find out the seasonal variation of species composition and distribution of fish eggs and larvae in the western part of Jeju Island, investigations were carried out with plankton net during five different months from September 2004 to August 2005. The mean abundance of fish eggs and larvae showed a maximum values in summer (August). During the survey period, total 59 species (51 genus, 26 families and 10 orders) of fish larvae were identified. Among the 10 orders, Perciformes (41 species, 15 families), Scorpaeniformes (7 species, 2 families) and Gasterosteiformes (2 species, 2 families) were the dominant species in this study area. The number of species was higher in high water temperature period than in low one, showing a peak in August as 25 species, and the lowest in May as 6 species. Engraulis japonicus, Scomber japonicus and Scombridae spp. which were migratory fish species occurred abundantly in summer. On the other hand, Sebastiscus marmoratus and Sebastes inermis which were sedentary fish species occurred abundantly in winter.

  • A single specimen (276.9 mm standard length) of the scorpaenid Sebastes glaucus was collected by a gill net from Dokdo, East Sea, Korea. The specimen is characterized by yellowish brown body color, deep body, convex frontal region and nape, board occipital region, 14 spines at dorsal fin, and no scales at maxilla. This is the first record of S. glaucus in Korea; we therefore add the species to the Korean fish fauna. According to the NFRDI (1999), we propose the Korean name, "Cheong-hoebol-rak" for this species.

  • Seasonal variation of species composition in the coastal waters off Wangdol-cho were investigated using the catches by gill net and trammel net from 2002 to 2004. A total of 58 species was collected and classified into 15 orders and 34 families. Of the 58 species identified, Scorpaeniformes and Perciformes accounted for 62.1% of the species. 35 species in 11 orders and 22 families were collected by gill net and 51 species in 15 orders and 30 families were collected by trammel net. The number of species was high in summer and autumn and lowest in winter. Catches were correlated with sea water temperature. The numbers of individuals and their biomass were 5,295 inds. and 1,890 kg, with the highest values achieved in summer and the lowest in spring. The most dominant species were Pleurogrammus azonus and Gadus macrocephalus. The seasonal species community showed a high similarity between summer and autumn.

  • A single specimen of Cyclopteropsis bergi, belonging to Cyclopteridae, Scorpaeniformes, was newly collected from Sokcho, Korea in May 2011. C. bergi is characterized by tip of 1st dorsal fin spines visible, scattered bony tubercles on body, and head without bony tubercles. New Korean name of Cyclopteropsis bergi is proposed as "kko-ma-do-chi".

  • Species composition and seasonal variation of fish assemblages in the western coastal waters of Jeju Island were determined using samples collected by a trammel net, gill net and fish pot in 2008. During the survey period, a total of 81 species (45 families and 13 orders) of fishes were identified, and Perciformes and Scorpaeniformes accounted for 69.1% of the total number. The number of species was higher in warm months than in cold months, showing a peak in July at 54 species and a low in April at 42 species. The number of individuals and the biomass peaked in September at 895 inds. and 135 kg, and were lowest in December at 450 inds. and 52 kg. The diversity indices of fish catches in trammel net and fish pot were 2.88~3.22 and 1.31~1.87, respectively, and were highest in September. Sebastiscus marmoratus, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Choerodon azurio and Pseudolabrus sieboldi were dominant species, which occurred abundantly during the entire survey period.

  • Based on three scorpionfish specimens (131.8~163.4 mm SL) collected from the coastal waters of Jeju Island, we described Scorpaenopsis neglecta as the first record from Korea. They were characterized by having 12 dorsal fin spines, lacking of palatal teeth and of black pigment between the first and third dorsal fin spines, wider interorbital region than orbital diameter, no median interorbital ridge, uppermost opercular spine with multicusps, and a broad blackish band distally and numerous various sized black spots on inner side of pectoral fin. We proposed a new Korean name, "Ssol-chi-u-reug" for the species.

As a results, author confirmed 389 species belonging to 257 genera, 123 families and 27 orders. Among them, the ascertained species in the western coast of Korean were 233 species belonging to 161 genera, 80 families and 20 orders, and those distributed in the Chinese water were 300 species belonging to 213 genera, 115 families and 27 orders.
