Thus, this study intended to understand how the illness experiences and health beliefs are associated with health behaviors. Three focus groups composed of 16 breast cancer survivors living in Seoul and GyeongGi were conducted with 5 to 6 people in each group. For illness experiences, health beliefs, and health behaviors of breast cancer survivors, some major themes related to physical, behavioral, psychological, and social domains were identified. Understanding health beliefs and health behaviors for Korean breast cancer survivors will be an important step toward developing social work interventions for enhancing health promotion.

  • The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experience of mothers who have had children with cancer. Participants were seven mothers who had children diagnosed with cancer between 3 to 36 months. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews and analyzed by Colaizzi's phenomenological methodology. Overall, 216 significant statements, 62 formulated statements, 16 themes and five theme clusters were identified. The five theme clusters were 'heartbreaking sadness', 'arduous journey of battling', 'protect my child', 'feeling varying between gratitude and disappointment', and 'suffering and wishing to be with family'. Mothers who have had children with pediatric cancer receiving chemotherapy have experienced strong emotional fluctuations as well as hope as they cope with their ill child. However, they try to become strong women and embrace their family to cope with their situation. • This study was conducted to analyze research behaviors of bibliotherapy studies in order to improve the level of bibliotherapy study in the LIS. 130 articles of journals were divided into five major fields, and analyzed using major areas, research subjects, research methods, affiliation of authors, and participants. The results showed that bibliotherapy studies in LIS have been conducted rather broadly by the practitioners ever since the 2010s. However, diversification of research topics, research methods, and theoretical foundations are found to be problems that need to be solved. Based on the statistics, suggestions are made: to expand the target of bibliotherapy to various ages, classes, experience groups, and situation groups; to combine reading books with further activities such as discussion, role-play, and play therapy; to take advantage of a variety of diagnostic test tools and to utilize clinical treatments; to conduct qualitative and quantitative research simultaneously in order to achieve the benefits.

  • This paper investigated the biomedical medicalization of "depression"which is growing fast in Korea in terms of the treatment mechanism. Depression has been regarded as a mental disease that occurs with mixing various causations because what was the cause of this disease was not clarified until a recent date. Thus, as depression treatment, the medicine and the psycho-socio therapy have been used. However, from 1990s, as the brain science was introduced in the western society, and the high-tech diagnostic equipment of the brain disease and new drugs for the mental disease were developed, depression was rapidly redefined as 'the brain nerve system illness'that is easy to be taken and is able to obtain the permanent relief with the regular care. Under the influence of the redefinition of depression and the new treatment of it, recently, 8% of depression patients per year emerge as the aggressive cure subjects in the Korean psychiatric circle. However, according to the Korean psychiatric circle's unofficial calculation, it is estimated that only 10% of depression patients are receiving the accurate treatment but over 80% of the patients are not. If so, what does this estimation mean? Based on this question, this paper critically investigated the biomedical medicalization of depression.

  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS) are rare, life-threatening mucocutaneous -diseases, usually attributable to drugs and infections. Corticosteroids have been used in the management of TEN for the last 30 years. This remains controversial and is still much debated. TEN can occur despite administration of high doses of systemic corticosteroids. The psychiatric side effects of corticosteroids can include headache, insomnia, depression, and mood disorders with or without psychotic episodes. Steroid-induced psychosis is dealt with by tapering or discontinuing the steroid; antipsychotics are also sometimes used. We report a case of an 11-year-old boy who was admitted with TEN. He had also been diagnosed as having nephrotic syndrome in the past. Remission was achieved through induction therapy and by maintaining the use of steroids. After a full-dose intravenous dexamethasone for TEN, he showed psychotic symptoms. We diagnosed him as having steroid-induced psychosis. We tapered the steroid use and initiated an atypical antipsychotic medication, olazapine and intravenous immunoglobulin (IV-IG). His symptoms dramatically improved and he was discharged.

  • This study was performed to examine the prevalence of and risk factors for depression and anxiety among breast cancer survivors in their 40s. Completed questionnaires were collected from 609 breast cancer survivors in their 40s who agreed to participate the study. The mean scores of CES-D and GAD-7 were 16.35(SD=9.24) and 4.25(SD=4.17), respectively. Nearly 47.7% of the participants had depression and 10.3% had anxiety. The mean score of pain severity was 1.91(SD=1.60) and 10.9% of the participants reported more than moderate pain. The final model in the hierarchical regression analysis showed that pain interference, unemployment, the type of live-in partner, and past psychiatric disease were the significant risk factors for depression, and pain interference, unemployment and past psychiatric disease for anxiety. These results show the prevalence of depression and anxiety among breast cancer survivors in their 40s is high and suggest appropriate psychosocial intervention should be provided for high risk groups based on those risk factors.

  • This study is a qualitative study applying phenomenological methodology to understand the experiences of childrens with precocious puberty and to describe the whole meaning. Participants were randomly selected from six childrens who had been diagnosed with precocious puberty. From October 12, 2016 to November 18, 2016, data were collected through in-depth interviews with individuals and group interviews. The method proposed by Colaizzi (1978) was used to guide the process of data analysis. Four theme clusters were derived from interview data : the treatment chosen by the mother, uncomfortable treatment, illness not understood well, and don't want to get treatment again. we identified the various emotional and psychological difficulties experienced by childrens with precocious puberty. Future research should develop a nursing intervention program to reduce the burden of the children and accept the treatment as a positive emotion.
