  • This study has been conducted to investigate the effect of self awareness of halitosis on the quality of life related to oral health in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis and use basic data related to oral health of patients with chronic renal failure which is very rare in Korea. In terms of oral symptoms based on awareness of halitosis, there were significant differences in symptoms of teeth pain in the past one month, bleeding gums, symptoms of tongue or cheek pain, dry mouth, In terms of status of oral functions, there were significant differences in discomfort upon chewing foods, difficulty of pronunciation and presence of lost teeth. As the results of analysis of effect of self awareness of halitosis on the quality of life related to oral health in patients with chronic renal failure, it was shown that there were significant effects in psychological discomfort(B=-2.028, p<.01), poor social skills(B=2.596, p<.01) and social disadvantage(B=-2.173, p<.01). Thus, because self awareness of halitosis gives psychologically and socially negative effects, it could be an important factor to patients with renal failure whose number is rapidly increasing.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in psychological adjustment among university students according to their parents' divorce status and their parents' conflict. Specifically, students who have not-divorced parents were subdivided into two groups: those who have with a high degree of conflict and with a low degree of conflict. The results were as follows. First, the degree of the marital conflict from the divorced parents is higher than the one of the marital conflict from the parents not divorced. Second, the group who has the parents with a high level of marital conflict went through the highest difficulties among 3 groups at all variables without the parent-child relationship. Therefore, this study suggests that marital conflict is more closely related to psychological adjustment of children than parental divorce itself.

  • Since the introductionof modern therapies, more children with cancer have survived their illness. As a result, an interest in the degree of adjustment achieved by cancer survivors has increased. In this study, quality of life and behavior problemsof child and adolescent cancer survivors were compared with those of healthy controls. Also, the patternsof the discrepancy between parent-report and self-report were compared. Childhood cancer survivors aged 8-18 and their mothers were participated in the study. Parent and self report versions of PedQL were administered to assess the quality of life. K-CBCL and K-YSR were further completed to assess internalizing and externalizing behavior problem. Results suggested that cancer survivors generally showed lower quality of life in physical and social domains and more internalizing behavior problem than healthy control group. However, the results were affected by the domain, age group, and informant. The pattern of discrepancy between parent and self report was similar. All parents reported higher levelsof quality of life and lower levels of behavior problems compared to the self reports of their siblings. In assessing internalizing problem behaviors, cancer survivor group showed greater discrepancy than the healthy control group. The implications, limitations, and directions for future research were also discussed.

  • This study conducted to analyze the difference of perceived benefits, psychological well-being, exercise application attachment, and perceived exercise achievement according to the message frame provided in the mobile fitness game. Repeated Measure Design and Playtest methodologies were used for this research. As a result, when gain messages were shown, all factors were higher than the case of showing loss message. The results of this study emphasize that when persuasion messages need to be presented through a health functional game, gain messages can be more effectively delivered to the users of health functional game than loss messages.

  • This study has investigated a psychological status of optimal and pleasant driving condition by measuring various physiological signals using SCR(skin conductance response), PPG(peripheral plethysmograph), SKT(skin temperature) and HR(heart rate). The physiological response was measured during various simulated driving conditions. We developed a hardware and algorithm to measure and analyze the physiological response. The physiological signals has reflected the level of driver's tension or relaxation as well as the heart rate. The emotional responses of drivers were also measured and analyzed in this experiment. The result of the study can be used to design a system to enhance the driver's emotional satisfaction as well as to monitor the driver's safety and health condition.

  • This article examines factors that influence health and quality of life. In addition to the symptomatology and physiological functioning, the influence of the psychological functioning and interpersonal relationship on the overall health and quality of life are also investigated. Using a case-study approach, a total of 70 patients suffering from allergy or asthma were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire developed by the present authors. It assessed the following six areas: Cause and onset of illness, psychological functioning, health management, trust, social support received and overall health and quality of life. Based on the transactional model (Bandura, 1997; Kim & Park, 2005), the results of the case studies have been integrated and divided into three aspects: (1) Cause and onset of illness that includes physiological and environment factors; (2) mediating influences that includes psychological functioning, health management, interpersonal relationship and social support received; and (3) outcome factor that includes symptomatology, health and quality of life. The psychological functioning includes self-efficacy (self-regulated efficacy, efficacy for enlisting social support, efficacy for managing the environment, and efficacy for overcoming difficulties), positive outlook, life goals, experience of stress, and proxy control. Interpersonal relationship includes trust of family members and the physician. Health management includes receiving proper health assessment, following the advice and prescription given by the physicians, control of the environment and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The results indicate that physiological, psychological, relational and environment factors interact with each other and affect individual's overall health and quality of life. Self-efficacy, social support received from family members, trust of physicians, and the health care system are key factors promoting healthy lifestyle and quality of life. The results indicate the need for further interdisciplinary, indigenous and cultural psychological research.

  • This study explored resilience and protective factors in children at-risk. Teachers of 755 children in child care centers replied to questionnaires regarding resiliency and behavior problems; children's mothers replied to questionnaires about risk factors, own parenting, and family hardiness. The data of 216 vulnerable children and 355 children in a comparative group who had not been exposed to any risk factors were analyzed. Findings showed that resilience was differentiated by gender and age; that is, resilience in the vulnerable group covaried as a function of gender and age. The resilience level of the vulnerable group was lower than the comparative group. Children with fewer behavior problems had a higher level of resilience, and resilience was higher for vulnerable children with higher levels of protective factors.
