Research on Success & Failure of Platform business in perspective of multi-method research (결합형 방법론 관점에서의 플랫폼 비즈니스의 성공과 실패에 대한 연구)

  • The competition aspect of business has been transformed from competition among companies to competition among ecosystem, and has been grown to platform based business, which is defined as ecosystem among business. Coming to the spotlight with the advantages of platform business combined software and hardware like Apple, platform business have been emerging in many fields. In this research, we define platform and platform based business, and then review related researches. After this, we review four representative research methodologies which are Yin(2011)' s case analysis research, Eisenhardt(2007)' s case analysis research, Romano etc' s web based qualitative data analysis method(2003), and Creswll(2010)' s open coding technique. And then, we suggest this research' s natural methodology combined with the advantages of four research methodologies. Based on our research methodology, we choose three high commercialized categories, which are smartphone platform business, social platform business, and search engine platform business. And then, we choose seven companies in three categories with success cases & failure cases, and analysis each case in perspective of our research methodology. And then, we suggest critical success & failure elements. Based on our findings, we suggest three strategic elements for the longevity of platform based business. Finally, we suggest the limitations of our research and further research issues.

Kinematical Analysis of Lopez Motion in Horse Vault: Comparison between Successful and Failed Trials (도마 Lopez 동작의 운동학적 분석: YHS 선수의 성공과 실패 사례 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinematic comparison between successful and failed trials of Lopez vault techniques in male gymnastics. The subject, an Olympic gold medalist, was YHS (age: 27 years, height: 1.6 m, and mass: 53 kg) and fourteen high speed motion capturing cameras were used for data collection. The 26 reflective sensors were attached on major anatomical positions and 15 segment-body model was used to calculate the kinematic variables. According to results, the contact duration of the spring-board for successful trial(ST) was longer and that of failed trial(FT) and the range of motion of knee joint for ST was greater than that of FT. The movement times during pre-flight between ST and FT were same, but the movement time of horse contact period for ST was shorter than that of FT. The ST showed a longer movement time during post-flight and the longer horizontal distance than those of FT. Conclusively, YHS needs to approach the horse with a higher position of the body and higher incidence angle, as well as make faster twist angular velocity in an attempt to achieve ST.

Analysis of a New Product Failure by the Use of Root Cause Analysis and Fault Tree Analysis: The Case of Samsung Galaxy Note7 (근본원인분석과 고장수목분석 기법을 활용한 신제품 실패 분석: 삼성 갤럭시노트7 사례를 중심으로)

  • This study aims to analyze the causes of a new product failure by using system safety methods, focusing on the case of Samsung Galaxy Note7. However, when analyzing the causes of a product failure, if only technical problems are too emphasized, it is likely to miss other more meaningful causes of a failure. Thus, we claim that the root causes of a product failure should be identified in a broad perspective of integrated systems that include non-technical as well as technical elements. With this viewpoint, we investigated the failure of Samsung Galaxy Note7, by using Root Cause Analysis(RCA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). The results showed that it is necessary to address not only the technical issues but also other non-technical issues, such as a very impetuous launch of a new product due to a very tough competition in the market. Additionally, we also found that RCA and FTA could be a useful tool for analyzing the causes of a new product failure from the viewpoint of an integrated system comprising technical and management elements.

  • The ultimate goal of this study is to investigate the cases with respect to smart factory that has been introduced by German government. To do this, the study suggest implications for manufacturing version 3.0 that is one of manufacturing revolution agendas in Korea. The main point of smart factory is the convergence between manufacturing and information and communications technologies such as CPS(Cyber-Physical Systems), MES(Manufacturing Execution Systems), 3D Printer, AI(Artificial Intelligence), and so forth. It is hard to accomplish a complete manufacturing automation. In fact, German government had experienced the failure in pursuing the smart factory agenda. But now the agenda is gradually realized by a variety of success stories from German. Thus, this study is to investigate the well-known success stories that came from German.
