Assessment of Oncogenicity from Pesticide Residues in Korean Foods (한국식품 중 잔류농약의 종양유발성 평가)

  • Dietary intake and oncogenic risk of 12 pesticides used in Korea whose oncogenic potency was known were assessed from published data. Dietary oncogenic risk (excess tumor incidence for a 70-year human life span) for Korean population was estimated to be $2.17{\times}10^{-3}$ on the basis of legal maximum residue limit, $4.33{\times}10^5$ on the basis of maximum practical residue level and $5.10{\times}10^{-6}$ on the basis of mean practical residue level of examined pesticides, all of which exceeded the negligible risk standard $1{\times}10^{-6}$ of US EPA. A systematic follow-up study on those oncogenic pesticides should be undertaken in order to mitigate the people's worry about the cancer risk by the abuse of pesticides in food production.

  • In real system application, the 3-D obstacle avoidance system for the autonomous control of the underwater flight vehicle (UFV) operates with the following problems: the sonar offers the range/bearing information of obstacles in a local detection area, it requires the system that has reduced acoustic noise and power consumption in terms of the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), it has the UFV operation constraints such as maximum pitch and depth, and it requires an easy design procedure in terms of its structures and parameters. To solve these problems, an intelligent 3-D obstacle avoidance algorithm using the evolution strategy (ES) and the fuzzy logic controller (FLC), is proposed. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, the 3-D obstacle avoidance of UFV is performed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively solves the problems in the real system application.

A Study on the Optimal Method for recycling the Waste Electronics' Reverse Logistics (폐전자제품 회수물류 최적화 연구)

  • A short consumption cycle caused by the technological development and the diversification of customer lead to both the dynamic growth of the industry and the waste recycling issue at the same time. Including Korea, the situation is particularly worrisome in some countries, such as India and China, where acute environmental hazards have resulted from a combination of a lack of recycling centers' capacity and the domination of a large backyard recycling sector. A study about to maximize the current recycling center efficiency with minimal changes is required. In this study, we suggest the optimal location selection method for the recycling center based on the well-known reverse logistics cost minimization model. An actual recycling data about a specific electronic equipment and region in Korea are used for the verification of the method suggested.

  • Cloud computing systems require a huge number of storage servers due to the growing implications of power bills, carbon emissions, and logistics of data centers. These considerations have motivated researchers to improve the energy efficiency of storage servers. Most servers use a lot of power irrespective of the amount of computing that they are doing, and one important goal is to redesign servers to be power-proportional. However, Research on large-scale storage systems is hampered by their cost. It is therefore desirable to develop a scalable test-bed for evaluating the power consumption of large-scale storage systems. We are building on open-source projects to construct a test-bed which will contribute to the assessment of power consumption in tiered storage systems. Integrating the cloud application platform can easily extend the proposed testbed laying a foundation for the design and evaluation of low-power storage servers.

Sugar Supply and Intake of Koreans (한국인의 당류 공급 및 섭취실태)

  • 최근 식생활의 서구화로 인해 기호식품의 사용량이 증가하고 설탕섭취량은 계속적인 증가를 보이고 있다. 특히, 아동들이 우리의 전통식생활에서 멀어지고 단 맛 위주의 스낵류나 과자 케일 등과 같은 기호식품의 사용으로 인한 설탕섭취량이 증가하고 있다. "식품수급표"상에 나타난 설탕공급량을 위주로 우리 국민의 설탕소비패턴과 국제간 비교를 통해 한국인들의 설탕섭취수준이 어느 정도인지를 파악하고 단맛에 대한 한국인의 기호도의 변화과정을 살펴보았다. "2001 국민건강영양조사"에서는 한국 성인 1일 1인당 약 60 g 정도의 설탕 섭취량을 보였다. 농림부의 "식품수급표"를 중심으로 살펴보면 2002년에 1인 1일당 설탕공급량이 57 g으로 나타나 미국인의 1일 설탕섭취량인 130 g 정도인 것에 비하면 아직도 적다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 1962년에 4.8 g이었던 것을 생각하면 상당히 증가하였다. 식품수급표상에 나타난 국제 통계 비교치에서는 한국인의 1일 설탕공급량을 99g 으로 잡고 있어 실제로는 한국인들의 설탕섭취량이 상당한 수준으로 올라왔음을 짐작케 한다. ISO의 국제 비교에서는 1년 1인 소비량이 22.7kg으로 전 세계 국가 평균 소비량을 상회하고 있다. 아동의 가공식품 소비로 인한 설탕섭취량은 급속히 증가하였고, 현재 급속히 증가하고 있는 아동비만 현상과도 관련이 있다. 1995년에 행해진 초등학생들의 설탕섭취실태자료를 통해 볼 때 이미 10년 전에도 도시지역이 아닌 농촌 지역 아동의 설탕섭취량이 이미 60 g 이상을 넘어서고 있었고 급원식품에서 성인들이 주로 과일류 의존이 높았던 반면 아동들은 간식류에서의 설탕섭취가 매우 높았다. 따라서 연령별로 매우 자세한 간식 목록에 의거한 설탕섭취량 조사가 무엇보다도 필요하다. 현재 한국의 식품성분표에는 다양한 한국음식에 대한 설탕함량 Database가 없으므로 미국의 USDA Database를 기초로 한국 식품의 설탕 함량을 추론해야 하는 어려움이 있다. 따라서 다양한 한국음식의 설탕함유량에 대한 Database구축이 무엇보다도 필요하다고 보인다.

Experimental Study on Reduction of Emissions for Marine Diesel Engines with a Double Post Injection (선박용 디젤엔진에서 이단지연분사에 따른 배기 배출물 저감에 관한 실험 연구)

  • Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization has decided to reinforce the NOx emission standards for ships passing an ECA(Emission Control Area) with Tier III standards from January 1, 2016. In this study, real-time measurements of the exhaust gas, cylinder pressure and fuel consumption were conducted at each load of a T/S Hanbada main engine of Korea Maritime and Ocean University, which is controlled by single injection and double post injection for reducing NOx emissions. The results showed that the quantity of CO2 and NOx increased in proportion to the engine load, whereas the CO concentration was inversely proportional to the engine load. In addition, double post injection decreased 10 % of P-max and reduced 25~30 % of the NOx emissions compared to single injection, whereas there was a trade-off relation, such as increase 3~5 % of SFOC (Specific Fuel Oil Consumption).

  • This paper is to analyze the efficiency of power consumption in logistic systems that are based on self-driving roller conveyors by the simulation technology. The improvement of the efficiency brings advantages for reducing greenhouse gas emission and logistics costs. A self-driving roller conveyor is operated only when products are loaded on itself. Thus, the self-driving roller conveyor systems consume less electric power than continuous-driving roller conveyor systems. In this paper, we design a DEVS (Discrete-Event based System) based simulation model and construct self-driving roller and continuous-driving roller conveyor models. For the verification and validation of the designed simulation system and conveyor models, we model a corresponding logistic model for the experimental environment and compare between the model and a real system. The main objective of this paper is to describe the power consumption advantage of self-driving roller conveyor based logistic systems using a simulation method.

  • Based on the efficient supply chain management which will be derived the customer satisfaction, the developing strategies about the scale and location of distribution center(DC) is a very important decision factors to improve the logistics cost efficiency. To do this, we will analyze the conventional DCs' location and cost which belongs to 'D' grocery company operating in Korea and propose the useful way for relocating and establishing DC in company to satisfy the reduction target of logistics cost.

Power-Minimizing DVFS Algorithm for a Video Decoder with Buffer Constraints (영상 디코더의 제한된 버퍼를 고려한 전력 최소화 DVFS 방식)

  • Power-reduction techniques based on DVFS(Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling) are crucial for lengthening operating times of battery powered mobile systems. This paper proposes an optimal DVFS scheduling algorithm for decoders with memory size limitation on display buffer, which is realistic constraints not properly touched in the previous works. Furthermore, we mathematically prove that the proposed algorithm is optimal in the limited display buffer and limited clock frequency model, and also can be used for feasibility check. Simulation results show the proposed algorithm outperformed the previous heuristic algorithms by 7% in average, and the performance of all algorithms using display buffers saturates at about 10 frame size.

  • In recent years, the smart grid technique for maximizing the energy efficiency of power networks has received a great deal of attentions. In particular, the Demand Response is a core technology differentiated from the present power network under the smart grid paradigm. To minimize the electric cost and maximize users' satisfaction, this paper proposes a unique scheduling algorithm derived by using optimization where the characteristics of various home appliances are taken into account. For this goal, we represent mathematical consumption patterns of the electric loads and propose the optimal scheduling scheme based on the importance factor of each device during one day. In the simulation results, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in the viewpoint of the minimal electric costs utilizing real statistical figures.
