  • Rail road slope can be fatted because of existence of unexpected soft subsoil. Purpose of this study is verifying the cause of rail road slope failure and determination of soil strength for remedy. Drilling some boreholes, cone penetration test and field vane test were executed in order to find out the cause of slope failure. In addition, laboratory test was conducted in order to determine soil strength of soft soil sampled as undisturbed state. As a result of both the in-situ and the laboratory tests, the cause of slope failure is thought to be propagation of failure zone by progressive rupture of overconsolidated clay Soft soil strength was determined through back analysis of the failed slope.

  • Various type of in-situ and laboratary tests were performed in order to evaluate the stiffness of sedimentary soft rock. In triaxial compression tests of sedimentary soft rocks, axial strains from the axial displacement of the loading piston or specimen cap conventionally were considerably larger than those measured. tocally on the lateral surfaces of specimen, due to the bedding errors at the top and bottom ends of a specimen. A local deformation transducer was used to measure axial strains free from the bedding error ranging from 0.001% to about 1%. In ultra-sonic wave tests, the elastic modulus of unconfined spec imens was smaller than that of confined specimens, due probably to microfracks. Young's modulus Ed from ultra-sonic wave tests and those at small local strains from triaxial tests were similar, both of which agreed very well with Young's modulus Er from field shear wave velocities. Young'a modulus from the field behaviour was virtually similar to that obtained by reducing Er based on the strain level-dependency of stiffness evaluated by the triaxial tests.

  • The comparative study using the lab-scale experiment and the discrete element analysis is attempted to analyze the cross-anisotropic elasticity of granular soils. The lab-scale experiment consists of the small stress-controlled triaxial cyclic tests and the bender element tests. In the discrete element analysis the simulations of lab-scale cyclic tests are conducted in the various directions. Good agreement between the experimental data and the simulation on the elastic properties in the axial and shear directions confirms the usefulness of the discrete element method. The comparative analysis of the difference in the experimental data and the simulation of radial cyclic tests shows that the discrete element method can successfully be used to check the reasonable magnitude of each measurement in the experiments.

  • We evaluated the homogeneity and accuracy of low level airborne fibrous standard, and accomplished the proper proficiency test. We had found that the correlation of concentration of standard solution and asbestos density was 0.9863~0.9968, and concluded that the proper guideline of the analysis result was ${\mid}Z{\mid}{\leq}2$ interval of Z-score.

  • This study analyzed the reinforcement effect by conducting laboratory test, model test and program analysis to utilize the surface stabilizer used for the restoration work of collapsed slopes as a reinforcing material for aging reservoirs that exhibits a curing reaction similar to cement. Based on the results of the laboratory test, a model test and program analysis were performed by applying 9% of the mixing ratio. As a result, when the surface stabilizer was used in aging reservoir, it was found that the flow of water only occurred on part of the slope and underground in reservoir. And the water flow could be reduced inside the reservoir. In addition, it was analyzed that the seepage discharge could be reduced by about 42% and the saturated area within the reservoir by about 73%, thereby securing the stability of the aged reservoir.

  • Discrete Element Method was conducted for rock and coarse-grained materials in development of granular mechanics and related numerical model due to analyze and apply micromechanical property. And it was verified that the analysis to consider bonding effect was insufficient. In this study, to overcome limits of existing method, it was conducted to analyze difference between indoor test result and bonding effect using $PFC^{3D)}$. For indoor test of mixed soil, uniaxial compression tests by curing time and by cement content were performed. And, DEM to suitable for each condition of indoor test was conducted. In the result of this study, in terms of geotechnics, it was verified that DEM can be used for application as numerical laboratory as well as prediction of micro and macro behavior about bonding effect of mixed soil.

  • In this research, numerical simulations by PFC considering discrete element method are conducted to predict experimental results of large triaxial compression test with rockfill material for dam construction. For generation of compacted assembly with specific grain size distribution and initial material porosity, the clump logic method and expansion of generated particles are adapted. To predict stress-stain behavior of large triaxial test, discrete particle modelling is applied with micro parameters which are chosen by calibration process. It is expected that distinct particle modelling method could be used as a useful tool to investigate micro and macro behavior associated with geotechnical problems and develop a numerical laboratory.

  • The consolidation behavior of soft clay is controlled mainly by its compressibility and deformation characteristics. Soil permeability depends on various soil characteristics, including the soil type and anisotropy. The coefficient of permeability of soft clay is determined by using a laboratory test (the Oedometer test) or a piezocone test. The latter test is useful for estimating the permeability characteristics from $c_h$ and $k_h$ by performing an excess pore-pressure dissipation test. This study seeks to validate an existing theoretical formula in applying it to marine clay, and to assess the relation between $k_h/k_c$ and the mechanical properties of soft clay. Piezocone tests and laboratory tests were performed using sediment from the Yellow Sea and from the South Sea near Korea. We compared $k_h/k_v$ values obtained using the piezocone test and using laboratory consolidation tests. The obtained values are similar to the values obtained by Jamiolkowski et al. (M application); therefore, the latter values are recommended to be used as $k_h/k_v$.

  • Using the results from laboratory soil test, field vane test and piezocone penetration test, the engineering characteristics of the soft ground at east side of Gwangyang Port, which is located at south coast of Jeollanam-do, were investigated and optimal piezocone penetration test depth was derived to calculate piezocone factor. In this paper, the results of 61 laboratory soil tests, 226 times of field vane tests and 26 piezocone penetration tests were used. The result of laboratory soil test suggested that some physical properties such as specific gravity, moisture content, liquid limit and plastic index and others are higher than other south coast regions, meanwhile uniaxial compression strength, undrained shear strength, defined as mechanical property, appeared to be relatively small, distributed widely. According to the plastic chart, the ground was classified as high compressibility clay and low compressibility clay, mostly represent to Type 3 clay by Robertson (1990)'s classification chart. Piezocone factor was calculated by empirical method, based on the undrained shear strength which was obtained by the field vane test. According to the analysis with 3 different depth range, to set the appropriate measured depth range of piezocone penetration for comparation, using average value of the range of 5 times the vane length showed the highest correlation.

  • In order to analyze the effect of fines content on sedimentation and self-weight consolidation characteristics of dredged soil, a series of self-weight consolidation tests with different fines content were conducted. From the experimental test results on dredged soils, it was found that the coefficient of sedimentation and consolidation is correlated with water content. And it is related to fines content as well. So, in this study, correlation between fines content and the coefficient of sedimentation and consolidation has been proposed. And it is expected that the coefficient of sedimentation and consolidation can be estimated by the percentage of fines content.
