Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of health perception, body image and sexual function on depression according to the menopausal stage in Korean middle aged women. Methods: Subjects were 182 perimenopausal and postmenopausal women who had not received hormonal replacement therapy. A five-item General HealthShort Form (SF-36) Health Survey Questionnaire (Ware & Sherbourne, 1992) was used to measure health perception. Body image was measured Semantic Differential scale, CES-D was used to measure the level of depression, and sexual function was measured by FSFI. Results: The subjects rated their health as 'moderate', their body image as 'moderate, and level of depression as 'high'. However, there were no significant differences in health perception, body image, and depression between perimenopasual and postmenopausal women. Postmenopausal women experienced lower levels of sexual function than perimenopausal women in sexual arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain. In stepwise regression analysis, 21.7% of variance in depression was shown to be perceived health and body image in postmenopausal women. However, in perimenopausal women, perceived health and sexual function explained 34.5% of variance in depression. Conclusion: These findings indicate that nurses must consider the menopasusal stage when counseling their patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine current status of somatic symptoms of late school-aged children using the school health clinic and to investigate the influence of perceived attachment security and social support on their somatic symptoms. Methods: For this descriptive study, self-report questionnaires were completed by fifth and sixth graders attending 'A' elementary school in Gyeonggi-do. Data from 216 students were included. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Most frequent somatic symptoms were headache, fainting, backache, numbness in a body part, and muscle ache in that order. More frequent somatic symptoms were reported by girls, students who recognized their family SES as low, students who used school health clinic often and students who were dissatisfied with school life. Somatic symptom showed negative correlations with attachment stability and perceived social support from family and teachers. In the regression analysis, the variables; low attachment stability, female gender, and low satisfaction with school affected more frequent somatic symptoms. Conclusion: Careful monitoring of late school-aged children expressing frequent somatic symptoms is required. Intervention programs to improve attachment security and satisfaction with school should be developed for school children, especially girls, presenting with somatic symptoms.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the effects of stress management program on perceived stress, geriatric depression, and somatic symptom in elderly Korean subjects. Methods: A pre-post test design with a nonequivalent control group was used. Fifty elderly Korean subjects with mild depression were recruited from the registerants at four public senior citizen centers within S-gu in Seoul. They were randomly allotted to the experimental group(n=25) and control group(n=25). The intervention was performed for one hour each week at each center for 5 weeks. The effects were measured by Perceived Stress Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale-Korean, and Patient Health Questionnaire-15. Results: Perceived stress and depression were significantly reduced in experimental group. The somatic symptom was not significantly different in the experimental group. Conclusion: The stress management program may have merit in improving mental health of elderly Koreans, although this conclusion is equivocal pending further well-controlled studies that include mediation techniques such as conversion therapy and health gymnastics.
This study examined the relation among perceived family support, depression and physical health status in Korean elderly. Participants were three hundred elders attending the house for elderly (NoInGyong) located in kwanak-gu and other 14 gu in Seoul Korea. Data were collected using structured questionnaire via clustered random sampling. The instruments used for this study were the simplified depression scale for elderly designed by Sheikh & Yesavage, the family support scale developed by Choi Young Hee, and the physical health status developed by Choi Young Hee & Jung Seng En. Data analysis included: percentage, average, SD, t-test, ANOVA, & Pearson correlation coefficiency. Participants in this study represented low level of family support but high level of physical health status and depression. There was a significant negative relation between family support and depression(r=-.755, P=.001). There was a significant relation between family support and physical health(r=.329, P=.001). There was a significant negative relation between depression and physical health status(r=-.515, P=.001). Nursing implications were suggested.

This study explores the health behaviors and related situations of Korean low-income breast cancer survivors using in-depth interview. The study derives 95 concepts, 23 sub-categories and 12 categories in open coding. Illness experiences were categorized by behavioral, psychological, and social domains, cognitive were categorized by causal and destiny thought, emotions were categorized by negative, positive emotion, reserve capacity were categorized by internal and external domains and health behaviors were categorized by behavioral, psychological, and social domains. Understanding illness experience, cognitive, emotion, reserve capacity and health behaviors for Korean low-income breast cancer survivors will be useful in developing social welfare interventions and for enhancing health promotion.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate how college students' perceived stress, cognitive stress, and somatization affect their heart rate variability (HRV). Methods: This study is a cross-sectional survey research on 191 university students, registered at the G University. The perceived stress scale (PSS) and cognitive stress response scale, were used to assess level of stress. The somatization symptom scale of the Symptom Check List 90 (SCL-90), was used to assess level of somatization caused by stress. To assess heart rate variability (HRV), we conducted a five-minute test using a pulse wave analyzer, to analyze short-term HRV. Results: The SCL-90 somatization score had relatively high positive correlation (p< .001) with cognitive stress, but low positive correlation (p< .001) with perceived stress. Cognitive stress response had low negative correlation (p< .001) with 1nSDNN and 1nRMSSD among HRV parameters. Perceived stress was not correlated with HRV. Multiple regression analysis showed that variables of perceived stress, cognitive stress, and somatization symptoms, could not explain HRV. By contrast, one of the HRV indicators, 1nSDNN, was affected by age, gender, and aggressive-hostile thought, the latter being a subscale of the cognitive stress response scale. Conclusion: This study suggests that stress evaluation for people in early adulthood will be more effective, if the evaluation examines cognitive stress and heart rate variability.
Objectives: The object of this study was to compare between perceived stress, coping strategies and quality of life between parents of childhood cancer and normal controls. Methods: Global assessment of recent stress(GARS) scale and symptom checklist-90-revised (SCL-90-R) were used to measure perception for stressors and stress responses(psychopathology). Coping scale and Smithklein Beecham quality of life scale were used to measure coping strategies and quality of life. Results: Scores of perceived stress related to interpersonal, changes in relationship, sickness or illness, financial, unusual happenings on the GARS scale were significantly higher in parents of childhood cancer than normal controls. Scores of the SCL-90-R, somatization, depression, anxiety, hostility subscale were also significantly higher in parents of childhood cancer than normal controls. Scores of self control and positive reappraisal were significantly higher in parents of childhood cancer than normal controls. Parents of childhood cancer scored significantly lower in quality of life than normal controls. Scores of depression were also significantly higher in parents of children diagnosed as acute lymphocytic leukemia(ALL) than those as acute nonlymphocytic leukemia(ANLL). Conclusions: The results suggest that patients with parents of childhood cancer were likely to have higher levels of perceived stressor and psychopathology and lower quality of life than normal controls.
The purpose of this research is to understand immersive media such as virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, 360-degree videos etc. from the perspective of user-based approach. 3D videos were once expected as the next-generation industry, but soon it further evolved into UHD and are now followed by immersive media represented by virtual reality. As the virtual reality plays an important role, the current research tries to bring up implications that can be applied to the industrial field along with academic understanding through six theoretical approaches related to virtual reality such as media richness, interactivity, presence, body-ownership, user experience, and visual perception. These six theories were used in immersive media studies such as 3D videos. Media richness and interactivity are the main factors forming positive or negative attitude, presence explains why users are immersed, user experience accounts for total psychological reaction, and visual perception explains how complex the experience of seeing is. Especially, although there is less media research applied, the body-ownership is likely to be not only used in virtual reality research, but immersive media research. The user-based theories related to virtual reality will provide various implications for immersive media researchers as well as hardware and content creators of virtual reality.
This study explored measures to promote the reporting of child abuse, instances of which are increasing year after year. To this end, 16 cases of child abuse, encompassing four instances of each of the four types of child abuse (physical, neglect, sexual, and emotional), were presented to participants to examine whether the perception of each type of abuse affected the degree of its perception as a case of child abuse. Next, the effects of the four types of child abuse on the intention to report child abuse (low vs. high) were investigated in terms of gender (male vs. female) and the construal level. The results revealed that the participants' differed in the intent to report child abuse, depending on varied factors despite the fact that they perceived all cases as child abuse. In particular, no difference was found between men and women in their intent to report child abuse for cases of physical abuse and neglect. However, women exhibited a stronger intent than men to report sexual and emotional abuse. Further, the intention of reporting child abuse was stronger at the high construal level (related to why child abuse must be reported) than it was at the low construal level (concerned with what to do about child abuse). The practical implications of this study include the provision of educational content, the creation of publicity materials that place differing emphases on sex, and the application of low construal level education for reporting child abuse.

This study was to investigate two main purposes; The first was to explore the factors which have an effect on conceding seats to the old or the weak in subway(concessive action). The second was to examine the influence that the psychological burden and the responsibility had on concessive action and it's gender differences. The results of study 1 showed that affective empathy, morality, and negative-state relief were important inductive factors, while 3 factors were revealed as important inhibitory factors for the concessive action; psychological burden, repulsion for coercive demand for conceding seats and vagueness of concession situation. In study 2, We could find the fact that the psychological burden and the responsibility had a main effect on the concessive action. The more participants felt the psychological burden, they were likely to evaluate that the tendency to concessive action would be decreased. And the more participants felt the responsibility, they were inclined to evaluate that concessive action would be increased. Secondly, the interaction effect was also revealed: On the situation that the psychological burden was high and responsibility was low, participants judged that people tended not to concede seats. Finally, We were able to identify gender differences. Specifically, Judging the tendency to concessive action, women were more responsive to the psychological burden than men.
