  • This study was to investigate sociocultural attitude toward appearance, body image, and self-esteem predict the appearance management in middle and high school girls. A descriptive compare design was used with self-report questionnaires, which were completed by 384 subjects. Data was analyzed with t-test and regression. There were statistically significant differences in sociocultural attitude toward appearance (internalization, awareness), body image (appearance evaluation, appearance orientation, body area satisfaction), and appearance management (weight management, cloth management, face management) between the two groups. Regression analysis revealed sociocultural attitude toward appearance (internalization, awareness) and appearance orientation of body image were predictors of appearance management in middle school girls. The significant predictors of appearance management for high school girls were body image (appearance evaluation, appearance orientation, body area satisfaction). The study gives new suggestions that there is necessary different methods to educate and council for appearance management in middle and high school girls.

  • Objectives : Illness behavior is defined as the persistence of an adaptive/maladaptive mode of perceiving, evaluating and responding to health status and symptoms according to the status. In a cognitive aspect, somatizing symptoms are regarded as being originated from distortions, including magnification and/or amplification, of perceiving, evaluating and responding to symptoms such as bodily sensations. That is somatization may be explained by maladaptive illness behavior. In this study, we tried to investigate differences of illness behavior in depressive patient according to the presence of somatization. Methods : We divided 45 patients who were diagnosed as depression with ICD-10 diagnostic criteria into two groups(somatizing and non-somatizing group) according to the somatization subscale of Korean Depression Scale and compared two groups in the differences of illness behavior using the Illness Behavior Questionnaire. Results : Somatizing group showed significantly higher scores than non-somatizing group on the disease affirmation subscale($6.79{\pm}2.08$ vs. 4.76, p=0.003) and the denial subscale($3.25{\pm}1.22$ vs. $2.10{\pm}1.41$, p=0.006). There were no significant differences between two groups on the general hypochondriasis subscale and the affective unstability subscale. In a logistic regression analysis, somatizing group also showed higher odds ratio (OR) scores on the disease affirmation subscale(OR=1.418, p=0.089) and the denial subscale(OR=1.880, p=0.083). Conclusion : The disease affirmation and denial may be a discriminative mechanism of somatization in depressive patients. These subscales of Illness Behavior Questionnare could be useful markers, and psychiatric illnesses with somatizing and depressive symptoms may be differentially diagnosed and be predicted through these subscales.

  • Abnormal illness behavior in patients with somatoform disorders were known formed by their traditional disease concepts and somatization-prone socio-cultural factors. The authors evaluated the characteristics of abnormal illness behavior in patients with somatoform disorders(who had somatization) by using abnormal illness behavior questionnaire. Methods : 29 somatoform disorders(SD) and 57 disease controls were compared by clinical characteristics, severity of pain, state anxiety(by Spielberger's State & Trait Anxiety Inventory), depression(by Beck's Depression Inventory) and level of psychosocial stess(by DSM-III-R). The illness behavior was measured by illness Behavior Questionnaire(IBQ). Results SD group had longer period of somatic symptoms with less severity in pain. The degree of anxiety and depression were higher in SB compared with controls. However, the degree of psychosocial stress was almost same between both groups. In IBQ, SD showed higher scores in general hypochondriasis, disease conviction, and affective disturbance subscales compared to control group. Conclusion: High disease conviction and hypochondriacal nature revealed by IBQ seemed to be a role in making somatization by way of somatic focusing and hypervigilance. And those tended to lead patients visit hospital frequently and report various somatic complaints. Evaluating abnormal illness behavior in somatoform disorders would be not only helpful in understanding the natures of somatoform disorders but also useful differentiating SD with other psychiatric conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the path model consisted of action planning, physical activity, and depression in order to obtain an enhanced understanding of their relationship and to support the aged with depression in community. In order to achieve this, precedent study was reviewed and the program with physical activity and action planning was executed. the data of a investigation of action planning, physical activity, and depression of the aged participated in the program which was consisted of physical activity with Action Planning was used and 116 cases were analyzed. The data analysis was done by descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and path analysis. The results were as follows. First, the path model was accepted. Second, the direct path of action planning to physical activity was significant. Third, the direct path of both action planning and physical activity to depression were significant. Fourth, the effect size of action planning to depression was more than that of physical activity. Fifth, the indirect path of action planning to depression through physical activity was significant. On the basis of these results, this suggests a need to add action planning on national physical activity plan, establish the delivery system for physical activity program with action planning in mental health center in community, and applicate narrative approach skills for qualitative improvement of action planning.

  • Because chronic pain disorder may has multiple causes or contributing factors, including physical, psychological, and socio-environmental variables, the treatment of patients with the disorder requires biopsychosocial approaches in a multidisciplinary setting. In treating chronic pain, it is important to address functioning as well as pain, and treatment should be to increase functional capacity and manage the pain as opposed to curing it. Therefore treatment goal should be adaptation to pain or minimizing pain with corresponding greater functioning. Treatment begins with the initial assessment, which includes evaluation of psychophysiologic mechanisms, operant mechanisms, and overt psychiatric comorbidity. Psychiatric treatment of the patients requires adherence to sound pharmacologic and behavioral principles. There are four categories of drugs useful to psychiatrist in the management of chronic pain patients : 1) narcotic analgesics, 2) nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, 3) psychotropic medications, and 4) anticonvulsants, but antidepressants are the most valuable drugs in pharmnacotherpy for them. Psychological treatments tend to emphasize behavioral and cognitive-behavioral modalities, which are divided into self-management techniques and operant techniques. Psychodynamic and insight-oriented therapies are indicated to some patients with long-standing interpersonal dysfunction or a history of childhood abuse.

  • This study examined whether any differences were found in body comparison, body satisfaction, and appearance management behaviors according to socialcultural attitudes toward appearance among male and female adolescents in Gwangju and Jeolla province. It was conducted by a self-report survey of 598 male and female students in eigth and eleventh grades in Gwangju and Jeonnam province, South Korea. The collected survey data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, Factor analysis, ${\chi}^2$ test, K-means cluster analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan's grouping using SPSS/PC WIN 19.0 statical program. The results were as the following: Adolescents perceived and internalized more highly than the common level the socialcultural value toward appearance, especially for female, and by age, juniors in high school than in middle school. Socialcultural attitudes toward appearance could be classified into four categories: 'Accepted type', 'internal type', 'aware type', and 'unaccepted type'. Students who were classified as 'accepted type', and 'internal type' showed lower level of body satisfaction and compared their bodies more often with others. They also actively received appearance management behaviors. Therefore, they showed positive attitude toward cosmetic surgery and functional garments. They also worked hard to reduce their weights just to show off to others. In conclusion, it is necessary for education programs to protect self-esteem of adolescents from the socialcultural distortion to appearance.

To achieve this purpose, the study suggested a body image formation model of adolescents that can be applied to home economics education, and based on this formation model, analyzed contents on body image of current 12 textbooks of home economics education. The main results of this study are summarized as follows: First, to analyze textbook through body image formation model of adolescents, educational contents about body image were categorized into 4 constructs with 8 sub-categories. Second, we found the current textbooks about the child and family life field, food and dietary life field, and clothing life, are handling topics regarding body image formation model of adolescents, such as concepts and components of body image and antecedents and outcomes of body image. We conclude that although the current textbooks handles contents on body image of adolescents, those contents are sporadically presented across the three fields without an integrated perspective. Home Economics, as an entity of educating adolescents' self-esteem through daily life activities, needs to have a topic-oriented approach in developing a curriculum.

  • A comparison was made regarding illness behavior among patients with somatoform disorders, depressive disorders and psychosomatic disorders. The subjects consisted of out-patients with somatoform disorders(N=52), depressive disorders(N=52) and psychosomatic disorders(N=51). illness behavior was assessed by illness Behavior Assessment Schedule and the questionnaire about help-seeking behavior. The patients with somatoform disorders and psychosomatic disorders more often affirmed the presence of somatic disease, were more likely to have phobia of disease, had more preoccupation with ideas of disease and more frequently shopped around oriental clinics than the patients with depressive disorders. The patients with somatoform disorders more often attributed its cause to physical factors, less often attributed the origin of affective disturbance to psychological causes, showed Less depression and irritability, and were less likely to accept psychiatric treatment recommended by other physicians than depressive patients. The patients with somatoform disorders were more likely to report having been told that they suffered from a mild illness than those with psychosomatic disorders. The patients with somatoform disorders with psychological problems tended to inhibit expression of their emotion. Female patients with somatoform disorders more often affirmed the presence of psychological disorder and attributed its cause to psychological factors than male ones. These results suggest that in illness behavior, patients with somatoform disorders are different from depressive patients, whereas the former patients are similar to psychosomatic patients except the discrepancy between therapists and patients regarding evaluation of their symptoms. Thus, it is emphasized that first, therapists need to approach patients with somatoform disorders somatically with understanding of their underlying need to deny psychological problems, followed by either psychological or biopsychosocial approach.
