  • A new variety of Elsholtzia splendens (Lamiaceae) was found by the roadside of a mountain base at Jungmun-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do. The new taxon is termed Elsholtzia splendens var. fasciflora N.S. Lee, M.S. Chung & C.S. Lee, var. nov. The Korean name 'Da-bal-kkot-hyang-yu' was given. The morphological characters and illustrations of the species based on the holotype are provided together with a photograph of the habitat. It is distinctly distinguished from Elsholtzia splendens var. splendens by a few characteristics: leaves that area 2-4 cm long, leaves beneath the inflorescence, typically mostly 4; and inflorescence mosyly 2-4, fascicled, involucres oval.

A new variety of Hosta (Liliaceae): Hosta clausa var. geumgangensis M. Kim & H. Jo (비비추속(백합과)의 신변종: 금강비비추(Hosta clausa var. geumgangensis M. Kim & H. Jo))

  • A new variety, Hosta clausa Nakai var. geumgangensis M. Kim & H. Jo, was found in Geumgang River in Korea. This variety shares several characteristics (rhizomes with underground stolon, smooth scape and purple-colored anthers) with the $re{\acute{o}}lated$ varieties H. clausa Nakai var. clausa and H. clausa var. normalis F. Maekawa. However, H. clausa var. normalis has open flowers, capsules with seeds, purple-spotted petioles, long pistils, and long narrow perianth tubes, whereas this new variety has open flowers, seedless capsules, green-colored petioles, short pistils, and short narrow perianth tubes. Hosta clausa Nakai var. clausa has closed flowers and seedless capsules.

  • Here we described and illustrated two new taxa of Allium (Alliaceae) from southern part of Korea. One new species, A koreanum H. J. Choi et B. U. Oh was clearly distinguished from A. splendens of sect. Reticulato-bulbosa by larger and stellately spreading pale pink perianth, apparently exsert filaments, and conical stigma as well as chromosome number. Another new variety, A. thunbergii var. teretifolium H.J. Choi et B.U. Oh was also easily distinguished from its relatives, var. thunbergii and var. deltoides by terete and hollow leaf blade. Keys to the two species of Allium sect. Reticulato-bulbosa and the three varieties of A. thunbergii (sect. Sacculiferum) in Korea were described.

  • A variety plant in Polygonatum sibirieum R$_{EDOUTE}$, P. sibiricum R$_{EDOUTE}$ var. multiverticillatum R$_{IM}$ named by author, was discovered in Kang Won-Do, Korea. It was found that this plant has 4-7 whorled leaves, while the ordinary P. sibiricum R$_{EDOUTE}$ has 4 ones. • In the present paper, a new variety of Cordyceps gunnii (Berk.) Berk. is reported. It differs from C. gunnii by its much smaller secondary ascospores, (2.0-) 3.3 $(-4.3){\times}1.0{\sim}1.8\;{\mu}m$, as well as thinner asci and cap of the asci. Its anamorph is also reported as a new variety of Paecilomyces gunnii Liang, the ansmorph of C. gunnii. Its differ from P. gunnii by its conidia, mostly subglobose and much bigger, (2.2-) 4.7 $(-11.0){\times}(1.8-)\;2.6\;(-3.3)\;{\mu}m$. The type specimen and dry type culture are deposited at Research Center for Entomogenous Fungi, Anhui Agriculture University, China.

  • Comparative tolerance of the new rice varieties from Indicax Japonica cross to elastic and plastic chilling injuries was examined at the 3rd leaf-stage, the most sensitive stage to chilling during nursery, using a chilling chamber set 11\circ C, 13hrs. 20K lux day/5$^{\circ}C$ night. Seedlings were reared until 35 days after seeding in a 26\circ C, 13hrs. day / 18\circ C night chamber except the period of chilling treatment for 0, 3, 4, 6, 8 or 10 days. The new varieties were approximately twice susceptible to elastic injuries, and thrice susceptible to plastic injuries than the Japonica varieties in the term of chilling duration. Among the variables indicating apparant chilling injuries the reduction in dry matter responded most sensitively and differentiated well the varietal difference in chilling resistance even with shorter chilling period. Sequential aspects of the cause and effect relations involved in the development of the apparant chilling injuries are discussed and a schematic diagram is presented as Fig. 5 in the text.
