  • To improve AEP, wind turbine blade lengths are increasing every year. As the length of blades increases, the blade tip speed also increases. Because of the increased tip speed, the impact energy between the leading edge and raindrops also increases. The increased impact energy is the primary factor contributing to erosion of the blade's leading edge. Blade leading edge erosion reduces aerodynamic performance, increases repair costs, and causes downtime. Therefore, numerous studies are being conducted on protective solutions and RET systems to prevent and delay erosion of the blade's leading edge. However, few institutions in Korea research protective solutions and RET systems. In this study, we aim to develop a laboratory-scale RET system. The developed RET system was based on the ASTM G73-10 standard. As a result of the RET, it was confirmed that the erosion tendency was similar to that of overseas institutions. In addition, the effectiveness of the RET system was verified by a maximum erosion rate of 0.0023 for an epoxy-based protective solution.

  • Brittle materials such as rocks and concretes exhibit large strain-rate dependency under dynamic loading conditions. This means that the mechanical properties of such materials can significantly be varied according to load velocity. Thus, the strain-rate dependency is recognized as one of the most important considerations in solving problems of blast engineering or rock dynamics. Unfortunately, however, studies for characterizing the dynamic properties of domestic rocks and other brittle materials are still insufficient in the country. In this study, dynamic tensile tests were conducted using the Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus to characterize the dynamic properties of Geochang granite and high-strength concrete specimens. The dynamic Brazilian disc test, which is suggested by ISRM, and the spalling method were applied. In general, the latter is believed to have some advantages in experiments under high-strain rate deformation. It was found from the tests that there were no significant difference between the dynamic tensile strengths obtained from the two different test methods for the two materials given. However, this was not the expected result before the tests. Actually, authors expected that there be some differences between them. Hence, it is thought that further investigations are needed to clarify this results.

  • The Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite(COMS), the first geostationary observation satellite, was successfully launched on June 27th in 2010. The raw data of Meteorological Imager(MI) and Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI), the main payloads of COMS, is delivered to end-users through the on-ground processing. The COMS Image Data Acquisition and Control System(IDACS) developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) in domestic technologies performs radiometric and geometric corrections to raw data and disseminates pre-processed image data and additional data to end-users through the satellite. Currently the IDACS is in the nominal operations phase after successful in-orbit testing and operates in National Meteorological Satellite Center, Korea Ocean Satellite Center, and Satellite Operations Center, During the in-orbit test period, validations on functionalities and performance IDACS were divided into 1) image data acquisition and transmission, 2) preprocessing of MI and GOCI raw data, and 3) end-user dissemination. This paper presents that IDACS' operational validation results performed during the in-orbit test period after COMS' launch.

  • "Boram" is a new $F_1$ hybrid of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) with early maturing, high yield and high oleic acid. This cultivar was developed from the cross between Mokpo-CGMS (male steile line) and 8634-B-1-3-1-8 (restore line) for the production of edible oil and biodiesel in 2006. Yield trials were conducted from 2007 to 2008 and regional adaptation trials were examined at four locations in 2008. "Boram" has green and parted leaf, yellowish flower, and black seed coat. The ripening period of "Boram" is similar to "Sunmang", but 3 days faster than "Tammiyuchae". The average seed yield of the regional adaptation trials was 424 kg/10a, which was 11 and 48% higher than "Sunmang" and "Tammiyuchae" variety. Total oil content of "Boram" was 44.2%. In fatty acid composition, "Boram" has no erucic acid. However, oleic acid content is 68.5%, which is 3.7 and 5.4% higher than "Tammiyuchae" and "Sunmang". And total glucosinolate content was 2.27mg/g. Therefore this variety is recommended as a leading variety at southwestern areas including Jeonnam, Jeonbuk and Kyeongnam provinces and Jeju island of Korea.
