Development of Lithium-Ion based Onboard Battery for Space Launch Vehicle (우주발사체 탑재용 리튬이온 배터리 개발)

  • Lithium-ion batteries providing high gravimetric energy density are rapidly replacing Ni-Cd and Ni-H2 in aerospace applications. The main advantage is the weight reduction of the battery system. Weight is a major concern in aerospace applications. Also, lithium-ion offer low thermal dissipation, high energy efficiency, and low cell cost. The Onboard battery module for KSLV-I(Korea Space Launch Vehicle) contains 80 Sony US18650 cells configured as 10 strings in parallel, with each string containing 8 series connected cells. This allows to meet voltage and capacity requirements specified for the mission. In this paper design description and specifications of lithium-ion battery developed are presented. Qualification test flow is also shown to make sure the performance in the predicted space environment. Electrical performance was simulated by dedicated program, and verified with electronic load. Lastly, the capacity was proven on real equipment load assembly.

  • The end bearing capacity of rock-socketed drilled shafts under axial loading is investigated by Hoek-cell tests and a numerical analysis. From the test results, it was found that the ultimate end bearing capacity ($q_{max}$) was influenced by pile diameter, rock mass modulus and the spacing of discontinuity. A new ultimate end bearing capacity method is proposed by taking end bearing capacity influence factors, including rock mass discontinuity, based on field data. Through comparisons with other field data, the proposed $q_{max}$ method represents a definite improvement in the prediction of ultimate end bearing capacity of rock-socketed drilled shafts.

  • A force sensor of 30 MN capacity using build-up technique in which three load cells of 10 MN capacity are arranged in parallel was fabricated. A column spring element was adopted as a shape of a strain gage type load cell. Temperature compensation circuits were used to reduce the error of a load cell. It was estimated that the total error of the fabricated force sensor is less than 0.1 %. The force sensor may be used to calibrate or test material testing machines above 4.5 MN capacity in industries.

Consolidation Characteristics of Slurry Clay (슬러리점토의 압밀특성)

  • Dredged soil from sea has much higher water content than liquid limit of clay and even if small loads apply, it will suffer a great settlement. Therefore it is very difficult to perform a consolidation test with general consolidation apparatus because of high water content. In this study Rowe cell apparatus consolidation tests have been performed with 5 slurry clays of a water content of 100%, 110%, 120%, 133%, and 150%. From the test results the consolidation characteristics such as compression index, secondary compression index, consolidation coefficient, and strain have been investigated with a variation of water content of dredged soil. The equations to get consolidation constants such as a compression index, a coefficient of consolidation, and strain have been proposed with the field water content.

  • Korea Railway is enhancing the railway wireless communication system from VHF and TRS which have been used for 100 years to LTE-R starting with Ministry of Science and ICT's allocation of Integrated Public Network Frequency on December 2014. LTE-R has advantages on technology performance, also on ease of evolution based on standardization compared to existing technologies. However there are few problems that need to be solved to provide stable railway wireless services in the future. Due to national spectrum policy, LTE-R has frequency interference with Integrated Public Networks (PS-LTE, LTE-M ) and UHD-TV which was commercialized in 2017. This paper introduces performance changes caused by interferences which were founded from the test bed in Wonju~Gangneung LTE-R project and the result of RAN-Sharing. In addition, this paper suggests the standard for LTE-R cell planning in the case of sharing the Integrated Public Network Frequency by analyzing the changes of designed link-budget factor based on the test result.

An Experimental Study on Shear Strength of Saturated Sand (포화사(飽和砂)의 전단강도(剪斷强度)에 관한 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究))

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the results of shear-deformation of saturated sand under the 3 dimensional stress with the results of simple torque-shear test already reported, Japaness standard sand, Toyoura sand, was chosen as test sample and the equipments of the department of soil mechancis laboratory of Nihon University were used. The conclusions obtained are as follows. 1). The friction angle of sand (${\phi}$) is proportional to the density regardless of the condition of stress-strain. This is because of the reason that the lower the cell pressure becomes, the larger the volume changes in case of the same density. 2). The value of ${\varphi}$ are variable according to the condition of stress-strain in the same density, and ${\phi}_dTS$ is larger than ${\phi}_dPS$ and ${\phi}_dTC$ when cell pressure is low. 3). ${\phi}_dPS$ is larger then ${\phi}_dTS$, under the same denstiy and same cell pressure. Thus the shear strength of sand is decided according to the condition of stress-strain 4). the relationship between the stress ratio (q/p) and strain increment ration in the plane strain test is linear regardless of the density and the cell pressure of the test sample.

The Study on the Long-term Reliability Characteristics by Solar Cell Ribbon Thickness (태양전지 두께에 Ribbon 따른 장기 신뢰성 특성에 관한 연구)

  • 본 논문에서는 태양전지의 Ribbon 두께(A-type:0.2mm, B-type:0.25mm)에 따라 3가지 온도조건 ($-40{\sim}65^{\circ}C$, $-40{\sim}85^{\circ}C$, $-40{\sim}105^{\circ}C$)으로 열충격 시험을 수행하였다. 그 결과, A, B type 별 초기 평균효율은 15.2%로 같았다. 하지만, 열충격 시험(600 Cycle) 후 Condition 1에서 A-type 7.5%, B-type 7.7%, Condition 2에서는 8.6%, 13.2%를 나타내었다. Condition 3에서는 각각 11.6%, 19.9%의 감소율을 나타내었다. 열충격 시험 후 A-type보다 Ribbon두께가 두꺼운 B-type의 효율이 크게 감소하였다. 이는 A, B type 모두 이종재료 접합부의 금속간화합물(IMC)층이 형성되어 전기적 저항이 증대된 것으로 판단된다. 또한, B-type의 I-V 특성 곡선 및 EL을 분석한 결과, p-n층이 파괴되고, 병렬저항이 감소하여, 장기적 신뢰성에서 A-type 보다 더 취약한 것으로 나타났다. 향후 태양전지 Ribbon 형상에 따른 장기 신뢰성 특성에 대해 수치해석 및 시뮬레이션 분석이 수반되어야 할 것이다.

A Study on the Non-destructive Inspection for End Closure Welding of Nuclear Fuel Elements for the Irradiation Test (조사시험용 핵연료봉 용접부 비파괴검사에 관한 연구)

  • Nuclear fuel elements containing dry recycling nuclear fuel pellets for the irradiation test in a reactor were remotely fabricated from spent PWR fuel materials in a hot cell. End closure welding as well as seal tube welding for thermal sensor of the elements was performed by Nd:YAG laser. The soundness of the end closure welds and seal tube welds for the elements were evaluated by a precise X-ray inspection system composed of a micro-focus X-ray generator with an image intensifier and a real time camera system. Then, helium leak test was performed for the elements. The soundness of the welds of the fuel elements was confirmed by the X-ray inspection and helium leak test. The irradiation test for the fuel elements were successfully completed at the HANARO research reactor.

  • This paper gives a brief summary of the TVC battery design description, specifications and test results. The TVC battery for KSLV-I upper stage contains 168 Sony l8650VT high power lithium-ion cells. It configured as 2 strings in parallel, with each string containing 84 series connected cells. This allows to meet nominal 270V voltage and capacity requirements specified for the mission of the Thrust Vector Control(TVC) system. The loads profile of the TVC system has short duration, high current pulse. To power such a system with minimal mass, the battery employed l8650VT Cells. This cell is specifically designed for high rate applications and is capable of a 10C continuous discharge.

  • In this paper, evaluation method of structural integrity for cone-type composite lattice structures with hexagonal cell was conducted. A finite element analysis was used to evaluate the structural integrity of cone-type composite lattice structure. The finite element model for evaluation of structural integrity was generated using solid element. In order to consider the difference in mechanical properties between intersection and non-intersection part, the mechanical properties were applied considering the fiber volume fraction of each part. Compression test of cone-type composite lattice structure were conducted for verification of evaluation method of structural integrity. The analysis result showed 2% errors in displacement and good agreement with test result.
