  • There has been a growing interest in the elimination of anoxic layer in the Youngsan River Estuarybecause the anoxic water mass caused mainly by the inflow of fresh water from the sea wall might cause the mass reduction of benthos during summer. An ocean outfall system to discharge treated wastewater into sea water may be used as one of the effective and economical ways to eliminate the anoxic layer. The suitable ocean outfall design is generally proposed for the prediction of the buoyant jet behavior in the near field. The parameters including CTD and current data are taken into account f3r more reliable buoyant jet behavior calculation. One of the numerical models, CORMIX 1, approved by EPA is used herein for the prediction of the trajectorial variation of the cross-sectional salinity and DO concentration distribution on the calculated buoyant jet boundary according to the tidal periods. On the basis of the results, it is suggested that the single port outfall is a useful system to eliminate the anoxic layer. Proper strategies are also proposed for achieving desirable ambient conditions.

  • In this paper, we propose a hard handover scheme which adaptively decides important handover parameters such as hysteresis and time-to-trigger values considering the load difference between the target and serving cells. First of all, the hysteresis value can be automatically adjusted according to the load difference, thus it is used to decide the handover trigger time. As a result, through the adaptive hysteresis scheme, handover drop rate is improved. However, this adaptive hysteresis scheme has a problem that the ping-pong effect, which occurs due to the frequent movement of mobile stations at the cell boundary, is increased. Therefore, to solve this problem, we propose a novel adaptive time-to-trigger scheme with the time-to-trigger which is in inverse proportion to the hysteresis value already established by the adaptive hysteresis scheme which adapts to the changing load difference between the target and serving cells. The simulation results show that the proposed adaptive time-to-trigger scheme based on the adaptive hysteresis is better than existing schemes in terms of handover drop rate and ping-pong generation.

  • Lab effectively supplemented the effects of outside radiation on image plates in the process of image acquisition of CR (computed radiography) systems and conducted for effective utilization in the case of clinical application. For this, Lab classified the storage places and time periods of image plates and compared and analyzed the differences between small dark spots. Lab also assessed the concentration distribution within the boundaries of images. Lab compared and measured the number of dark spots in a light room and a dark room depending on the storage places of image plates and found that dark spots slightly increased in an image plate when stored in a light room on the first and second days. Dark spots increased in proportion to the length of time stored. In the case of the image plate stored in a dark room, the number of dark spots remarkably decreased. With regard to picture quality as related to the location of image plates, the damage to picture quality could be reduced by locating regions of interest in the center. With regard to differences in sharpness following changes in the thickness of subjects, fewer scatter rays occurred and sharpness improved by reducing the thickness of subjects as much as possible. To get medical images of excellent quality, image plates should be managed effectively and it is desirable to keep images plates in dark iron plate boxes and not to expose them to outside radiation for a long time.

  • This paper introduces a new explicit spectral element method for the simulation of SH-waves in semi-infinite domains. To simulate the wave motion in unbounded domains, it is necessary to reduce the infinite extent to a finite computational domain of interest. To prevent the wave reflection from the trunctated boundaries, perfectly matched layer(PML) wave-absorbing boundary is introduced. The forward problem for simulating SH-waves in PML-truncated domains can be formulated as second-order PDEs. The second-order semi-discrete form of the governing PDEs is constructed by using a mixed spectral elements with Legendre-gauss-Lobatto quadrature method, which results in a diagonalized mass matrix. Then the second-order semi-discrete form is transformed to a first-order, whose solutions are calculated by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. Numerical examples showed that solutions of SH-wave in the two-dimensional analysis domain resulted in stable and accurate, and reflections from truncated boundaries could be reduced by using PML boundaries. Elastic wave propagation analysis using explicit time integration method may be apt for solving larger domain problems such as three-dimensional elastic wave problem more efficiently.

  • This research focuses on analysis of a interaction fracture of various glasses due to contact of water sprayed curtain on hot glass surface with high temperature produced from convective heat source near glass wall. A large scaled experimental test was done in order to find the range of the glass surface temperature to be able to cause the breakage of the glasses when water droplets reach on the hot surface. This paper shows the allowable temperature of the glass surface for prevention of the cooling down breakage before water curtain droplets contact the surface. Allowable Temperature if $250^{\circ}C$ for the tempered glass but general glass is very relatively low. Therefore if the water curtain spray system was adequately activated by a thermal detector installed below ceiling adjacent glass wall with water curtain nozzle system, all hot glass would not break out by cooling water droplet's contact on the hot surface due to convective heat released by adjacent fire source near the glass wall.

  • Recently the dairy cow industry have faced environmental issues such as eutrophication, global warming, etc. An LCA was used to quantify the environmental impact of a dairy cow system and to identify key issues contributing to the impact. The system boundary crop cultivation for feeding dairy cow, feed production, rearing and manure management (cradle-to-gate). The functional unit was 1 kg of milk (fat protein corrected milk, FPCM) produced. Rearing and cultivation of feed crops stages in system boundary to the environmental impact of the domestic dairy cow system were dominant issues. Techniques such as suppression of enteric fermentation, improvement of the energy efficiency of farm equipment and apparatuses, management of leachate generated during the crop cultivation, and development of controling the loss of fertilizer during crop production would be necessary for the improvement of the environmental key issues of the dairy cow system.

  • Most recent infrared (IR) sensors have a focal-plane array (FPA) structure. Spatial non-uniformity of a FPA structure, however, introduces unwanted fixed pattern noise (FPN) to images. This non-uniformity correction (NUC) of a FPA can be categorized into target-based and scene-based approaches. In a target-based approach, FPN can be separated by using a uniform target such as a black body. Since the detector response randomly drifts along the time axis, however, several scene-based algorithms on the basis of a video sequence have been proposed. Among those algorithms, the state-of-the-art one based on Kalman filter uses one-directional warping for motion compensation and only compensates for offset non-uniformity of IR camera detectors. The system model using one-directional warping cannot correct the boundary region where a new scene is being introduced in the next video frame. Furthermore, offset-only correction approaches may not completely remove the FPN in images if it is considerably affected by gain non-uniformity. Therefore, for FPN reduction in IR videos, we propose a joint correction algorithm of gain and offset based on bi-directional warping. Experiment results using simulated and real IR videos show that the proposed scheme can provide better performance compared with the state-of-the art in FPN reduction.

  • Feature-based similarity has become an important research issue in multimedia database systems. The features of multimedia data are useful for discriminating between multimedia objects. the performance of conventional multidimensional data structures tends to deteriorate as the number of dimensions of feature vectors increase. The $R^{*}-Tree$ is the most successful variant of the R-Tree. In this paper, we propose a SOM-based $R^{*}-Tree$ as a new indexing method for high-dimensional feature vectors. The SOM-based $R^{*}-Tree$ combines SOM and $R^{*}-Tree$ to achieve search performance more scalable to high-dimensionalties. Self-Organizingf Maps (SOMs) provide mapping from high-dimensional feature vectors onto a two-dimensional space. The map is called a topological feature map, and preserves the mutual relationships (similarity) in the feature spaces of input data, clustering mutually similar feature vectors in neighboring nodes. Each node of the topological feature map holds a codebook vector. We experimentally compare the retrieval time cost of a SOM-based $R^{*}-Tree$ with of an SOM and $R^{*}-Tree$ using color feature vectors extracted from 40,000 images. The results show that the SOM-based $R^{*}-Tree$ outperform both the SOM and $R^{*}-Tree$ due to reduction of the number of nodes to build $R^{*}-Tree$ and retrieval time cost.

  • A recent major subject of geophysical exploration is research into 3-D subsurface imaging with a composite information from the various geophysical data. In an attempt to interpret Schlumberger sounding data for the study area in 2-D and 3-D view, resistivity imaging was firstly performed and then pseudo-3-D resistivity volume was reconstructed by interpolating several 1-D resistivity plots. Electrical resistivity discontinuities such as fracture zone were successfully clarified in pseudo-3-D resistivity volume. The low resistivity zone mainly associated with fracture zone appears to develop down to granitic basement in the central part of the study area. Seismic velocity near the lineament is estimated to be approximately as small as 3,000 m/s, and weathering-layer for the southeastern part is interpreted to be deeper than for the northwestern part. Geophysical attributes such as electrical resistivity, seismic velocity, radioactivity for the Chojeong Area were analysed by utilizing a GIS software Arc/Info. The major fault boundaries and fracture zones were resolved through image enhancement of composite section (electrical resistivity and seismic refraction data) and were interpreted to develop in the southeastern part of the area, as characterized by low electrical resistivity and low seismic velocity. However, radioactivity attribute was found to be less sensitive to geological discontinuities, compared to resistivity and seismic velocity attributes.

  • The sheetwise cadastral map data needs to become a Serial Cadastral Map (SCM) database for the promotion of the reliability of cadastral surveying, for the efficient operation of the Parcel Based Land Information System, and for the convenient use of land information as well. A large amount of money and time are required for the editing process of producing SCM DB in accordance with the $\ulcorner$Guideline for the Production of Serial Cadastral Maps$\lrcorner$ by the Ministry of Construction & Transportation if any of field surveying techniques is accompanied by. In addition, a boundary line that extends to a neat line does not meet the counterpart of the neighboring map sheet at a point. Such cases frequently occur and are much dependent upon the decisions of individuals in charge of editing or inspecting. The core processes of the research, firstly overlay SCM produced by the edition of the sheetwise cadastral maps with Autodesk Map on orthophoto images, secondly adjust the parcel boundaries which are delineated over more than one map sheet, and lastly compare the original boundary coordinates and areas with the corresponding adjusted ones and calculate root mean square errors (RMSEs). The research aims at promoting the quality of SCM by minimizing the inconsistency of parcel boundaries by means of the comparative analysis of the calculated RMSEs.
