  • This study is intended to investigate application of mica waste(MS) to fine aggregate for mortar by comparing it with cement mortar in which crushed sand(CS) and river sand(NS) are used. According to the results, as the physical properties of aggregate, specific gravity is large in order of MS, NS and CS, absorption ratio in order of MS, CS and NS, and unit weight and solid volume percentage in order of NS, CS and MS. In the case of MS mortar, mechanical properties, drying shrinkage and heat conduction ratio are reduced, but the radiative amount of infrared light is excellent compared with NS mortar. Fluidity and unit weight of MS mortar is larger than those of CS mortar, and strength does not make differences. Length change by drying shrinkage is larger, but heat conduction ratio and radiative amount of infrared light are smaller than CS mortar. Thus, it proves that MS can be used in place of NS and CS, but its quality is deteriorated slightly.

  • As this study is to test effects of chemical attack on deterioration of cement mortars using in crushed sand. Besides tests have been carried out with cement mortars by river sand and crushed sand by fine sand, cement mortars mix various proportions of slica fume and fly ash(up to $15\%$ and $50\%$ by weight for cement) were prepared and immersed in pure water, sodium sulfate solution, magnesium sulfate solution, seawater for 28days. Test on the change in the weight and compressive strength of cement mortars according to the duration of immersion time and the content of slica fume and fly ash was performed.

  • This paper presents experimentally investigated the effects of pozzolan made from various by-Product materials on mechanical properties of mortar. Fly ash(FA), slag (BFS), and palm oil fuel ash (POFA) were partially used to replace Portland cement. The results suggest that mortars containing FA, BFS, and POFA can be used as pozzolanic materials in making concrete with 28day compressive strength. After curing, the mortar containing 10-30% FA or POFA, and 30% BFS exhibited compressive strengths that of the original Portland cement (OPC). The use of FA, POFA, and BFS to partially replace Portland cement has evaluation method of the Assessed Pozzolan-activity index.(API)

  • This study is to test effects of sulfate attack on deterioration of cement mortar. Four tests have been carried out with four types of mortars mixed by ordinary portland cement and sulfate-resistant portland cement containing blast-furnace slag and fly-ash. It was immersed in sulfate solution for 7, 28, 91, and 180 days. from the test results, sulfate attack resistance of cement mortar was improved by admixtures (blast-furnace slag and fly-ash), sulfate-resistance portland cement mortar showed high resistance than ordinarily portland cement at compressive strength, and similar the resistance of sulfate attack with ordinarily portland cement mortar with admixtures.

  • At present, reinforced concrete pipe has been widely used as drain pipe. However, many reinforced concrete pipe is exposed at deteriorated environment by the growth of a sulfur-oxidizing bacterium isolated from corroded concrete. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of lining by polymer-modified mortar on the development in durability of reinforced concrete pipe. Polymer-modified mortars ate prepared with various polymer typer as cement modifier and polymer-cement ratio and rested for compressive and flexural strengths, adhesion in tension, acid resistance test, freezing and thawing test, and lining test of product in the field. From the rest results, it is apparent that polymer-modified mortars have good mechanical properties and durability as lining material. In practice, all polymers can be used as lining materials for reinforced concrete pip, and type of polymer, and polymer-cement ratio and curing conditions are controlled for good lining product.

  • The effects of high-range water-reducing agent (WRA) content and polymer-cement ratio on the strength properties of autoclaved SBR-modified mortars with WRA are examined. As a result, the flexural strength of the autoclaved SBR-modified mortars with WRAs tends to increase with increasing WRA content and polymer-cement ratio, and reaches a maximum at a WRA content of 2.0%. The compressive strength of the autoclaved SBR-modified mortars with WRAs is inclined to increase with increasing WRA content and polymer-cement ratio, and reaches a maximum at a WRA content of 2.0% and a polymer-cement ratio of 10%. From the test results, the addition of the WRAs is effective for improving strength properties of the autoclaved SBR-modified mortars.

  • A fiber reinforced grouts were made using ordinary cement mortar and high effective water reducing agent (naphthalene sulfonate) were made by addition polypropylene fiber and carbon fiber. The physical properties of the grouts were investigated through the observation of the microstructure and the application of fracture mechanics. When the polypropylene fiber and carbon fiber were added respectively with 0.03 wt% to the grouts the compressive strength, flexural strength and Young's modulus were about 60∼63 MPa, 12.2∼12.4 MPa, 4.2∼4.8 GPa and 63∼68 MPa, 12.2∼12.6 MPa, 4.8∼5.1 GPa, and critical stress intensity were about 0.77∼0.82 MNm-1.5, and 0.80∼0.87 MNm-1.5 respectively, It can be considered that the strength improvement of fiber reinforced grouts (FRG) may be due to the removal of macropores and the increase of various fracture toughness, polymer fibril bridging and fiber bridging.

  • For the present experiment five Portland cement mortars are in order: mortars with two different water/ cement ratios (W/C=0.45 and 0.50, each having no chemical additive), and those with an additive such as superplasticizer, air-entraining agent or water-repelling agent. We fix the W/C ratio of mortars having additive so that their pastes can yield the same workability as that of the cement mortar of W/C=0.50 with no additive. It is shown that the freeze-thaw resistivity depends heavily on the characteristic of wide pores. Despite a good deal of wide pores, the air-entrained specimen shows a good freeze-thaw resistivity due to appropriate air-pores. And also the specimen with water-repelling agent, which proves to cause the microstructure to become hydrophobic, make good resistance to freeze-thaw cycles in spite of its high wide-porosity. Our suggestion is that the freeze-thaw durability of Portland cement mortar/concrete can be more effectively enhanced by using air-entraining agent or water-repelling agent, and simutaneously by taking proper measures against foaming and/or the increased tendency of wide-pore building due to additive.

  • The increase of activated carbon contents in fly ashes accelerate the corrosion of steel embedded in ordinary portland cement(OPC) mortar. Cement losses its identity of colour when the % of carbon is increased. More than 60[%] area was rusted when carbon content is increased beyond 8[%] for the exposure period of one year. Comparable corrosion rate with OPC was obtained up to 6[%] carbon level only. The tolerable limit of replacement for various admixed carbon system under aggressive alternate wetting and drying condition with 3[%] NaCl was found to be 6 to 8[%].

  • Red mud is an industrial by-product produced during the manufacturing aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) and aluminum oxide(Al2O3) from Bauxite ores. In Korea, approximately 2tons of red mud in a sludge form with 40~60% moisture content is produced when 1 ton of Al2O3 is produced through the Bayer process. An annual production of approximately 20tons are produced by company K, which is responsible for most of the domestic production. Therefore, in order to utilize Red Mud in the construction industry, this study evaluated the pore characteristics of ordinary portland cement mortar according to the red mud replacement ratio.
