  • In this study, diurnal and intra-seasonal variations of summertime temperature lapse rate (TLR) by synoptic weather conditions in a mountainous basin are examined based on hourly temperature data observed in 2009 summer at an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) network deployed in Haean basin (called Punch Bowl), Yanggu in the Republic of Korea. Summertime average TLR between the top and bottom of the basin is $-0.53^{\circ}C$/100m. Due to its diurnal variations, TLR shows the lowest by $-0.25^{\circ}C$/100m at 6AM, while it maximizes up to $-0.85^{\circ}C$/100m between 4PM~5PM. Comparisons of daily average TLRs by synoptic weather patterns reveal that the magnitude of TLRs is greatest in the order of rainy days ($-0.63^{\circ}C$/100m), heavy rainfall days ($-0.53^{\circ}C$/100m), partly cloudy days ($-0.47^{\circ}C$/100m), and sunny days ($-0.39^{\circ}C$/100m). At dawn on sunny days in summer, strong cooling pools accompanying temperature inversion layers are formed within the basin, while on heavy rainfall days, warming pools are observed due to relatively low TLRs associated with the reduction of surface radiation cooling by clouds.

  • Recently, "aging in place" has become the principle philosophy of elderly housing policy in many countries. However, since there is ambiguity surrounding the universal definition of it, the meaning of AIP has been defined by political expediency. This study aims to discuss the meaning of AIP by examining the transition of elderly housing issues and policy in Japan. During the last two decades, the Japanese government has tried to launch a new elderly welfare system to shift the responsibility of elderly care from the family to the society and from the society to the region. And the focus of elderly housing policy has shifted from the promotion of three-generation dwellings to supporting the development of private residences. However, since the main goal has been limiting the welfare budgets rather than enhancing the quality of life, elderly housing issues have been reduced to a matter of choosing either elderly care facilities frequently located in suburbs or not. This paper suggest that we should pursue the true AIP idea in housing policy, and argues that to do so we need to consider AIP from diverse aspects such as temporal continuity, the range of space, the dynamics of place experience and the capability of communities.

  • The current research aims at classifying the bus stops as transfer center in order to establish the rational bus transfer systems. Existing research typically identifies characteristics of demands for bus stops and land use surrounding the bus stops and classifies and profiles the bus stops. A common problem with this type of research is that the results with cross-sectional characteristics of land use and bus stop usage do not capture the details of trip chain, the fundamental characteristics of the trips with transfer. This paper therefore examines bus stop classifications with such variables as transport mode chains, intermediate stop chains and timing chains. The analysis on the data collected on Monday 20 April 2009 for passengers of Gyeong-gi bus results in a clear classification among bus stops in terms of such trip chain variables. The research would provide useful information for the decision support of transfer stops location choice and infrastructure design.

  • Film-induced tourism in Gyeongbuk and Korea is concentrated on the on-location set, one-off events and film tourism as part of a holiday(visiting film locations or studios as an activity within a larger holiday) among several forms of film-induced tourism. Film-induced tourism in Gyeongbuk has been increased since the opening of the KBS on-location set of Mungyeong. The on-location set has brought the growth of film-induced tourism and thus many local governments have competed with one another for the construction of the on-location set without considering the management of the on-location set. This study is aimed at suggesting ways to minimize these negative problems and to boost film-induced tourism. First of all, we should find ways to sustain each characteristic of the on-location set. Second, we should develop the new tourism destinations by diversifying the forms of film-induced tourism through the opening of the film-related events and the construction of the film-related facilities. Last, film-induced tourism should be enlarged to contents tourism. It needs to enlarge the role of the Gyeongbuk Film Commission. The Gyeongbuk Film Commission should take exclusive responsibility of developing the film-related tourism commodities.

  • Married women who follow occupations have remarkably increased. Economic-activies married women[EAMW] have experienced a great degree of role confilcts as the results of that they should play the role of wage workers and do duty as household affairs as well as raise children. To understand problems of EAMW and to make alterniative plans for EAMW, the daily life actives of EAMW should be examined. This study attempts to understand the daily life activites of EAMW. To obtain the goal this research generalizes the daily life actives of EAMW. classifies the patterns the activites, and analyzes the activites in the micro-level. The acivites of EAMW mainly consist of formal business and household affairs. The spatial bounds of activities are influenced by weekdays and holidays. During the weekday their activities are mainly found around residences and/or work places; while, during the weekend, they are discovered around residences and/or around residences or relatives who take care of their children. EAMW move longer distance rather than a full-time housewife; however, the activites of EAMW are residential orientation like those of full-time housewives. The role conflicts of EAMW are mainly from social cultural structure, the distance between workplace and residence, and the location of public service institutes.

  • Development education started in some of developed countries of Europe since 1960s. Japan was interested in the development education with realizing the impotance of quality of life in the late of 1970s after high economical growth in 1960s. Just like Eroupe, development education in Japan was done to citizen by development NGOs. But under close cooperation with JICA and MOE, development education was gradually absorbed in formal education. Development education in Japan is done through interdisciplinary studies and the subjects. Geography national curriculum and textbooks in Japan show that the subject aimed to nurture Japanese in the world in the period from the late of 1960s to the late of 1970s. Thus the period can be named the sprouting time of education of development. But with entering the late of 1980s, geography national curriculum started to focus on fostering global citizenship to students. The turn in the educational aims can be counted as practical start of education of development. And education of development through geography was extended the most in the late of 1990s. But in the recent revised geography national curriculum, emphasis on education of development is reduced a little. It can be told that education of development in Japan arrives at the level of the full growth.

  • In the studies on residential move, there has been tendency of dichotomy where short distance moves are largely caused by housing to adjust to changes in households while long distance moves are induced by shift in labor market. However, some empirical studies have proven that residential move is so complex process that the simple dichotomy should be elaborated. In this sense, the present study seeks to identify compounded course of residential move in Korea. In determining migration history, families with younger householders, renters, householders with higher educational attainment and smaller households show a higher probability to move. In case of mobility, women were more prone to move compared to man. Women compared to man, older age augmented the probability to own a house after migration. Families with householders following an occupation of sales and technical service showed lowest tendency to own houses while it marked the highest in the group of professionals. Higher land price of a region was negatively related to owning houses after migration. The present study revealed that factors in macro level as well as micro level significantly affect the move of individuals with varying effects in accordance with migration history.

  • This paper looks into the process of the formation of a Chinese ethnic place in Jayang-dong, Gwangjin-gu. In doing so, the paper reviews Chinese immigrants with the approach of cultural adaptation. Specifically, in-depth interviews with both Chinese immigrants and Korean native people in Jayangdong has been conducted to analyze the local residents' reaction to the Chinese immigrants, the conflicts between the natives and the Chinese immigrants, and communications among them. Based on the analyses, the paper recognizes the change of relationship between the natives and the Chinese immigrants in the development of the ethnic place. The relationship between the Korean native people and Chinese immigrants in Jayang-dong turns out to be more positive than that in other Chinese towns. In Jayang-dong, in the early period of the formation of the area, the Korean native people and Chinese immigrants used to have conflicts. However, as time goes by, the conflicts has been resolved and they have embraced each other through interchanges between them based on mutual understanding and consideration. Cultural adaptation in Jayang-dong has occurred in the way that the immigrants have been integrated into the mainstream society based on the connectedness with both the native people and immigrants embracing each other.

  • Changes of the characteristics in summer rainfall in the Republic of Korea by the regime shift and their causes were examined by analyzing long-term observational data. There has been an abrupt increase in rainfall variability since 1998, which was mainly due to the enhanced rainfall during August~September, although the gradual increase was also detected in June~July. In June~July, the enhanced rainfall developed as a band type covering the whole East Asia while in August~September, it is only found over the Republic of Korea with the greatest increase of 130 mm over Seoul and Gyeonggi area. The two intensified anticyclonic anomalies over the north-northwest/east of the Republic of Korea resulted in producing northerlies/southeasterlies, transporting cold/warm-wet air flows, respectively. The center of the convergence zone from the two separate systems located in the Republic of Korea, leading to a favorable condition for the development of the extreme rainfall. The enhanced barotropic anticyclonic anomalies also affected in warming the sea surface temperature anomalies covering from the eastern coast of East Asia to North Pacific Ocean, which in turn leaded to enhance warm air transporting back to the Republic of Korea.

  • The study aims to measure and analysis the spatial equity of Medical welfare facilities for older persons and services, and, based on this, to seek the plan to secure the fairness. To this end, the research was carried out by converging the studies of geography and regional development for the equity of social welfare studies and space arrangement on types and functions of Medical welfare facilities for older persons. The main results of the study showed that, first, in case of the spatial arrangement(desire-to-service), Medical welfare facilities for older persons are located in all areas of cities(Si) and counties(Gun) but mostly existing in cities. Second, in case of the equity of regional distribution of Medical welfare facilities for older persons, it can say the equity in Gun is higher than Si, comparing the regions of Si and Gun. Third, in case of spatial equity of sanatorium for older persons, the spatial equity of care facilities for older persons showed statistical difference depending on the time required to reach the facility, but no difference on distance. This study made various suggestions based on the results of the above research, and suggested the necessity of convergence studies grafting technologies such as AI and the Internet of Things.
