  • Buses are a popular means of transportation. As such, thorough preparation is needed for passenger safety management. However, the safety system is insufficient because there are accidents such as a death accident occurred when the bus departed without recognizing the elderly approaching to get on in 2018. There is a safety system that prevents pinching accidents through sensors on the back door stairs, but such a system does not prevent accidents that occur in the process of getting on and off like the above accident. If it is possible to predict the intention of bus passengers to get on and off, it will help to develop a safety system to prevent such accidents. However, studies predicting the intention of passengers to get on and off are insufficient. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a 1×1 CNN3D-based getting on and off intention prediction model using skeleton keypoints of passengers extracted from the camera image attached to the bus through UDP-Pose. The proposed model shows approximately 1~2% higher accuracy than the RNN and LSTM models in predicting passenger's getting on and off intentions.

  • Vehicle occupant postures are anticipated to vary more widely during automated driving and to become more significant in terms of the autonomous vehicle safety. Experimental and computational approaches are needed to investigate and evaluate occupant behaviors during automated driving in general. However the validity and effect of such occupant postures are unknown, thus it is necessary to examine occupant behaviors and injury countermeasures for various occupant postures. This study was focused on the development and evaluation of restraint system model for occupant behavior examinations in the first step according to autonomous vehicle occupant safety. The finite element models of dummy and restraint system were set up and simulation results showed overall model performance and safety tolerances of different reclined occupant postures during frontal impact loading.

  • Every year, safety regulations are strengthened and applied to ships to help prevent accidents. However, the number of accidents has not decreased. When fire breaks out on a ship, the escape time varies depending on wher the fire is, and the risk of hazardous factors increase. Study is conducted to better understand the risks associated with factors and causes of delayed escape time owing to changes in fire location, as well as to reduce the time delay. To study the flow of combustion products and the escape process during a fire on ship., fire and passenger escape simulation were conducted using Pyrosim and Pathfinder based on FDS. As the location of the fire changed, the average visibility distance of the escape route increased from 3.1 to 4.2 m. This indicates that the escape process was unsafe, as the passengers' escape time increased from 9 to 34 seconds compared to the case without fire. We conducted the same simulation randomly applying smoke control systems. The average visibility in the fire zone increases from 14.9 to 22.0 m. Depending on the installation of smoke suppression, escape times improved from 0.8 to 8.3 seconds. The implementation of safety improvements in the area, has clearly reduced the risk of combustion products to passengers by activating appropriate smoke control system.

  • To prevent the Sewol incident again, by which the victims are 294 dead and still 10 missing, this study analyzed the change of safety consciousness of passengers onboard ship comparatively before and after the Sewol incident. The survey had performed 2 times at Jeju coastal cruise terminal at February 2014 and May 2014, and effective respondents were 394 and 401, respectively. After the Sewol incidents, the answers' ratio that they would follow the routes that the crews show and they would follow the crews' evacuation guides are decreased 24.5% and 18.5%, respectively. This means that the reliability on the crew members were decreased. Although 77.6% passengers responded that they felt nervousness onboard ship, 60% did not take safety lesson(s) and 45% did not know how to wear a life jacket. And also over 50% did not check the evacuation route map and the location of lifeboat, respectively. Meanwhile, 86.9% respondents answered the system of safey lesson should be changed, which has normally done by TV set.

  • There are a lot of curved subway stations in Seoul metropolitan area. These must be straightly constructed as many as possible. But some of stations are roundly designed and built in order to avoid pre-existed underground obstacle such as basement of high rise building, underground gas or water pipe line and subway stations from another line. As shown fig 1, one of the biggest problem occurring curved subway station is considered large gap between platform and vehicle when vehicle completely stop at the station. The gap potentially is in existence to subway passenger as very dangerous factors in rush hours. If passenger accidentally drop their food or leg between this gap when they get on the train and train leaves station, the passenger will be seriously injured by vehicle. In this paper, various design and instruments are introduced and best solution for this matter will be presented. In order to eliminate any possibility of accident happened gap between platform and vehicle, KRRI(Korea Railroad Research Institute) have been developed new safety instrument. These technologies were applied for patent by KRRI. These mechanisms will provide confidence as well as safety to Korean subway passenger
