  • The levels of strontium-90 in milk produced in Korea were determined during the past six years. Milk samples were collected from dairies and market shops in seoul area. Strontium-90 in milk was separated from calcium using fuming nitric acid and purified radiochemically. After seculear equilibrium was completed, the radioactivity of yttrium-90 was counted in a low background beta counting system. The determination of stable calcium in milk was also made by volu-metric method using 0. 1 N potassium permanganate solution. The highest value of 34.9 pCi $^{90}$ Sr/g-Ca was determined in August, 1966 and the lowest value was 7.5 pCi $^{90}$ Sr/g-Ca in August, 1967. From the result we can say that levels of strontium-90 are decreasing year after year and are far bellow the maximum permissible level recommended by International Committe on Radiation Protection.

  • In order to separate $Sr^{2+}$ selectively from environmental sample solutions containing $Ca^{2+}$, supported liquid membranes(SLM) were prepared and their characteristics of separation were investigated. The contents of carriers, DC18C6 and DNNS, in SLM affected the permeabilities of metal ions and selectivities of $Sr^{2+}$. The selectivity of $Sr^{2+}$ reached to 93.3% in a SLM with 0.1 M DC18C6 and 25 mM DNNS. When the ratio of $Sr^{2+}$ to $Ca^{2+}$ concentration in the feed solution was in the range of 1/25 to 1/50, the selectivity of $Sr^{2+}$ was greater than 90 %. Therefore, it is considered that the SLM prepared in this study is capable of treating environmental sea-water samples for strontium measurement.

  • This paper presents a quantitative method of sequential separation of $^{90}Sr,\;^{241}Am$ and Pu nuclides with an anion exchange resin and a Sr-Spec resin. The Pu isotopes were purified with an anion exchange resin. The americium and strontium fractions were separated from the matrix elements with an oxalate co-precipitation method. Americium fraction was separated from the strontium fraction with iron co-precipitation method and purified from lanthanides with anion exchange resin. Strontium-90 was purified from other hindrance elements with the Sr-Spec resin after oxalate co-precipitation. The measurement of Pu and Am isotopes was carried out by an ${\alpha}$-spectrometer. Strontium-90 was measured by a liquid scintillation counter. The radiochemical procedure of $^{90}Sr,\;^{241}Am$ and Pu nuclides investigated in this study has been validated by application to IAEA-Reference soils.

  • Purpose: Chitin and chitosan are nontoxic natural chelators that chelate radiostrontium effectively. The purpose of this study was to compare radiostrontium chelation of chitin and chitosan with that of well known chemical chelators, namely EDTA and DTPA. Materials and Methods: The chelaton rates of chitin, chitosan, EDTA and DTPA were compared using a column chromatography method (Sephadex G-25M, Sweden). Three kinds of chitins and four kinds of chitosans were used. All of them were water soluble. Results: Phosphated chitosan showed the highest chelation yield of 97% at pH 7. All of chitins, chitosans, EDTA and DTPA showed chelation yield of more than 90% independent of varing pH level. Conclusion: Chitin and chitosan have similar chelation rate as compared with EDTA and DTPA.

  • An accurate and simple analytical technique for $^{89}Sr$ and $^{90}Sr$, overcoming the demerits of the conventional method, has been developed with extraction chromatography and liquid scintillation counting. The Sr fraction was separated from hindrance elements with oxalate coprecipitation or cation exchange resin and purified with Sr-Spec column. With liquid scintillation counter, $^{89}Sr$ was measured by Cerenkov radiation method, and $^{90}Sr$ was measured by spectrum unfolding method. The developed radioactive strontium separation method was validated by application to the IAEA-reference material (IAEA-375, Soil) and radioactive waste samples.

  • In the natural, there exist several kinds of radioactive isotopes. From atmospheric weapon tests and then some isotopes are naturally radioactivity above all things, nuclear power plant operation and man-made radioactive isotopes concern steadily growing in the environment. During the fission process of nuclear weapon tests and nuclear power plant operation, more than 200 radioactive isotopes are generated. Among them, $^{90}Sr$ and $^{137}Cs$ has been regarded as very important isotopes due to characteristics. In this paper, a quantitative analysis method of environment low level $^{90}Sr$ is studied. Radioactivity level of the environmental $^{90}Sr$ is very low, and it emits continuous beta spectrum, and $^{90}Sr$ exists together with $^{89}Sr$, $^{90}Y$ and other radioactive isotopes. It very difficult to make the quantitative analysis of $^{90}Sr$. For the analysis of low level radioactive strontium, enrich and chemical separation of strontium from the other radioactive isotopes are needed. For the estimation of strontium recovery ratio, so called SGAT(Strontium Gravimetric Analysis Technique) was generally used among the domestic research groups, and chemical procedures were developed appropriation for the SGAT, Recently, by using ICP(Inductively Coupled atomic Plasma emission spectrophotometer), amounts of stable atoms can be measured easily and accurately to the extend of ppm or ppb. In this paper, new chemical procedures are developed to exploits the ICP technique. New developed method has simpler chemical treatment procedures and then it gives more accurate results compared with the traditional SGAT.

  • Chitosan is a natural chelating agent. It is derived from chitin which is a cellulose-like biopolymer distributed widely in nature, expecially in shellfish, insects, fungi, and yeast. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether orally given water soluble chitosan can eliminate intraperitoneally injected radiostrontium (Sr-85) in mice. Water soluble chitosan and usual food was mixed as 10:90 by weight. The mixed food were fed for 60 (group 1) or 90 days (group 2). No chitosan was given to the control group. Each group consists of 5 mice. Sr-85 ($0.2{\mu}Ci$) was intraperitoneally injected after completion of prefeeding of usual or mixed food. The same food was given for more 5 days. The animals were sacrificed at the 6th day. Isolated spines, skulls, femurs, tibias, teeth, and tails were counted by a gamma counter. The retention of Sr-85 in bones was significantly lowere in the prefeeding groups (p<0.01). It was lowest in the 90 day prefeeding group. Therefore, prefeeding of water-soluble chitosan was effective on the removal of intraperitoneally injected radiostrontium.

  • For the determination of radiostrontium, $^{89}Sr\;and\;^{90}Sr$ in environmental soil sample, a solvent extraction method for the separation of Ca and Sr from matrix using crown ether was investigated. In comparison with the existing fuming nitric acid method, the extraction method showed high chemical yield of strontium and provided simple and rapid analytical steps. The new analytical method applied to the determination of radiostrontium in some soil sample around a nuclear power station to show that the analytical procedure is readily applicable to the practical radioactivity monitoring.
