Numerical Simulation of Membrane of LNG Insulation System using User Defined Material Subroutine (사용자지정 재료 서브루틴을 활용한 LNG선박 단열시스템 멤브레인의 수치해석)

  • 304L stainless steel sheets are used as a primary barrier for the insulation of membrane-type liquefied natural gas(LNG) carrier cargo containment system. 304L stainless steel is a transformation-induced-plasticity(TRIP) steel that exhibits complex material behavior, because it undergoes phase transformation during plastic deformation. Since the TRIP behavior is very important mechanical characteristics in a low-temperature environment, significant amounts of data are available in the literature. In the present study, a uniaxial tensile test for 304L stainless steel was performed to investigate nonlinear mechanical characteristics. In addition, a viscoplastic model and damage model is proposed to predict material fractures under arbitrary loads. The verification was conducted not only by a material-based comparative study involving experimental investigations, but also by a structural application to the LNG membrane of a Mark-III-type cargo containment system.

  • Ag-Cu 공정 합금을 이용한 스테인리스 강의 brazing 거동에 미치는 산소의 영향을 조사하고 최적 brazing 조건을 도출하기 위하여 304L 스테인리스 강에 대한 다양한 산소농도의 Ag-Cu 공정 합금의 젖음성을 실험적으로 측정하였다. 0.02~0.07wt%의 범위에 해당하는 산소를 함유하였을 때 양호한 젖음 특성을 나타내었고, sandwich brazing 테스트를 통하여 유사한 조건에서 건전한 접합면을 얻을 수 있었다.

Plasma Assisted Nitriding of Stainless Steel Type 304L (304L 스테인리스 강의 플라즈마 질화처리)

  • Stainless steel type 304L has been nitrided in the low pressure (600Pa) and high nitrogen (80% $N_2$+20% $H_2$) environment for 5 hours by the square-wave-pulsed-d.c. plasma as a function of temperature $400{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ and pulsation. At the lower temperature range of $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ and at the relatively high ratio of pulse duration to pulse period. "S-phase" has been developed in the form of thin nitrided surface layer which has many cracks, leading to be nearly impossible for the industrial anti-wear and anti-corrosion applications. At the higher temperature up to $550^{\circ}C$ with the increasing ratio of the pulse duration to pulse period up to $50{\mu}s/100{\mu}s$, the nitrided layer, whose growth rate has increased also, has been composed mainly of CrN and $Fe_4N$ phases and has become thick, uniform and nearly crack-free.

  • Recently, the market of liquefied natural gas is growing in accordance with shale gas development and environmentally friendly policies. Also, LNG is in the spotlight as an alternative fuel to previously used fossil fuel and the fuel for the ship to meet emission standards which takes effected by IMO (International Maritime Organization). According to growth of LNG, LNG carriers needs are also expected to increase significantly. This study investigates low cycle fatigue (LCF) performance of 304L stainless steel weldments to investigate fatigue performance in plastic strain region. 304L stainless steel is known to have improved fatigue performance at cryogenic conditions. LCF behavior are investigated by a strain-controlled condition up to 1% strain range and conducted with three different thickness (3mm, 5mm, 10mm). Also, test were performed with three different strain ratio R such as R = -1, -0, 0.5, Finally, the fatigue design curve for 304L stainless steel weldments at room tem- perature are proposed. Considering all test conditions, it is shown that LCF performance have similar tendency regardless of thickness and strain ratio. LCF design curve of 304L stainless steel weldments are lower than 304L stainless steel base metal.

  • 가속기의 저장링 및 빔라인에는 방사광을 차단 혹은 일부 통과 둥의 목적으로 Photon Absorber와 같은 진공 부품이 사용되고 있으며, 이는 일반적으로 구리와 스테인리스 스틸 등의 이종재료를 브레이징 공정을 이용하여 제작함으로써 부품이 구조적 건성의 확보와 더불어 진공환경 및 수밀을 유지하고 있다. 그러나, Photon Absorber는 사용 용도에 따라 구조적 형상이 서로 다르기 때문에 브레이징 공정을 적용하는 경우, 상대적으로 제품 생산가격의 상승, 유지보수 및 제작불량에 따른 공정 제어의 어려움이 나타나고 있다. 본 연구에서는 스테인리스 스틸 (STS 304)과 구리(OFHC Copper)의 이종금속에 접합에 GTAW 용접 공정 기술을 적용하여 제반 용접공정에 따른 용접부 성능 및 진공 특성 등을 검토하였다. 용접봉 (ER CuSi-A)을 직접 사용하여 이종 재료의 시험편에 GTAW 용접을 적용한 결과, 진공 누설율은 $1{\times}10^{-10}\;Torr{\cdot}l/s$ 이하를 얻을 수 있었으며, 용접 접합부의 인장강도 210 MPa로써 구리 모재와 유사한 기계적 특성을 나타내었다.

  • 오스테나이트계 스테인리스 AISI304L강을 저온 플라즈마 분위기에서 표면에 C와 N을 주입하면 내식성의 저하 없이 표면경도를 증가 시킬 수 있다. 이 공정에서 온도에 따른 영향을 조사하기위해 $380^{\circ}C{\sim}430^{\circ}C$의 온도 범위에서 20시간 동안 실시하였다. 경화층의 두께는 $7{\sim}16\;{\mu}m$정도였으며, N의 농도가 높은 영역과 C의 농도가 높은 영역으로 나뉘어 형성되었고, N이 풍부한 영역이 표면층에 형성되고 그 아래에 C의 농도 높은 영역이 형성되었다. 표면층은 질소에 의해 확장된 오스테나이트(${\gamma}_N$)상을 가지며 고온에서 처리한 경우 석출물이 형성되었다. 표면경도는 약 $900\;HV_{0.01}{\sim}1200\;HV_{0.01}$로 측정되었다.

  • The membrane type LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas) cargo containment system is a special design structure for the large deformation behavior at LNG temperature$(-162^{\circ}C)$. The design of membrane is required great confidence so that membrane can plat role in the tightness of flammable fluid storing. LNG cargo containment is loaded and unloaded LNG between twice and five times in a week. During this process, the membrane has large deformation behavior due to the variation of temperature and pressure to the self weight. In this study, the evaluation of the fatigue strength of membrane is very important to determine the design life of LNG storage tank and to evaluate the mechanical properties at the LNG temperature. Also, in the view point of large deformation, the evaluation method is applied conservatively $\epsilon-N_f$ curve of SUS 304L.

  • A pair of connectors for transferring torque is widely used in various types of a mechanical system. By the repetition of mechanical contact between a pair of connector, wear occurs easily. This kind of defect sometimes can cause a serious problem of health in case of the connector is used in a refrigerator. In this work, the material combination of connectors was experimentally studied to reduce the amount of wear; for the combination of connectors, various types of engineering materials including polyacetal, polycabonate, stainless steel (STS-304), NiP coated STS-304, and STS-310 were evaluated to check each wear behavior. Also an effective method of wear test was suggested for precise controlling of wear conditions such as contact area, contact force, and relative motion speed. From the test results, it was found out that a pair of polyacetal to STS-304 and STS-310 showed the lowest specific wear rates among other pairs.

  • Pickling of oxidized 304 stainless steel has been investigated using rotating disk electrode in waste acid solutions generated from the etching process of silicon wafer in order to recycle them. The waste acid solution contained acetic, nitric, hydrofluoric acids, and silicon of $19.6g/L^{-1}$. Electrochemical behavior during the pickling was distinctively different between the original and silicon-removed acid solutions. Open circuit potential was continuously changed in the original solution, while it was discontinuously changed and fluctuated in the silicon-removed solution. Fast and abrupt removal of surface oxide layer with severe pitting was observed in the silicon-removed solution. It was found that solution temperature had the most influential effect on glossiness. Surface glossiness after pickling was decreased with solution temperature. At the same condition, the glossiness was higher in the original solution than in the silicon-removed solution.

  • Austenitic stainless steels have been widely used for various systems of nuclear power plants. Among these stainless steels, small pipes with diameter less than 14 inch have been produced in the form of seamless pipe. Annealing and cooling process during the manufacturing process can affect corrosion properties of seamless stainless steels. Therefore, 12 inch-diameter of as-received 304L stainless steel pipe was annealed and aged in this study. Intergranular corrosion resistance was evaluated by ASTM A262 Practice A, C, and E methods. The degree of sensitization was determined using a DL-EPR test. U-bend method in an autoclave was used to evaluate the SCC resistance in 0.01 M $Na_2S_4O_6$ or 40% NaOH solution at $340^{\circ}C$. As-received specimen showed relatively high degree of sensitization and intergranular corrosion rate. Carbon segregation was also observed near grain boundaries. Annealing treatment could give the dissolution of segregated carbon into the matrix. Aging treatment could induce segregation of carbon and finally form carbides. Microstructural analysis confirmed that high intergranular corrosion rate of the as-received seamless pipe was due to micro-galvanic corrosion between carbon segregation and grains.
