  • Currently, many forest residues have been generated by the National Forest Management Operation. Unfortunately, most of the forest residues are supposed to be used as raw materials for burning fuels like wood pellets. Even though the forest biomass must be effectively used for making high value-added products, they may be subject to disposable raw materials for wood pellets. Wood pellets are regarded as burning fuels with less contribution to the decrease in carbon gas emission, compared to raw materials for kraft pulps. In this study, we studied whether or not forest biomass mixed with various ages and, species could be used as raw materials for kraft pulps.

  • The study proposes to draw out the correlation on what kinds of influences local government personnel's performance capability affect the overall quality of the project, and to suggest institutional supplement policies. For the study, two analytical methods are conducted. First, a hypothesis per each factor was set by classifying the factors which affect the personnel's performance capability into organizational and individual factors. Second, a survey was conducted targeting the project management personnels and presented the result on the verification of the hypothesis through statistic techniques. As the result, it is considered that the quality of forest tending project is more affected by the individual factors than the organizational factor, thereby this study suggests the methods of reinforcement in project management personnel's performance capability.

  • This study was analyze the performance of Forest Work Team from 1999 to 2003. Following recommendations were come up by reviewing the performance of Forest Work Team. The volume of forest works should be increased in order to supply the constant daily work. This would provide the increase of their salary and maintain their salary and maintain their livelihood. The Forest Work Teams should be the members of registered business with highly trained manpower. Qualified Work Team should have extra financial incentive by comparing with general forest workers who did not have adequate skills. The percentage of the certified forest workers should be increased by providing the technical training. To increase the efficiency of forest work, the forest mechanization should be accomplished and the training of forest mechanization had to be offered regularly for the forest workers, and provided them with an education allowance.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the yarding productivity and cost of the man-power operation by plastic chute, the yarding operation by yarder attached in tractor (Chuncheon Tower-yarder) and yarding operation by Tower-yarder (RME-300T) in forest tending operation. As result of average yarding timber volume was 0.67 $m^3$, 3.8 $m^3$ and 7.3 $m^3$ per day and man, respectively. And, when an yarding timber volume was 60 $m^3$/ha, the total yarding time including setting up and dismantling time of the plastic chute and yarding line was 20 days and 2 hours, 7 days and 1 hours and 21 minutes, 3 days and 4 hours and 27 minutes, respectively. The operation costs were 104,448 won/$m^3$, 29,968 won/$m^3$ and 23,032 won/$m^3$, respectively. And, when yarding timber volume was 60 $m^3$/ha, the total operation cost including setting up and dismantling time of the plastic chute and yarding line was 7,429,173 won/ha, 2,431,573 won/ha and 1,610,672 won/ha, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore educational methods for elementary, middle and high schools using school forests via IT convergence. To this aim, we reviewed the previous literature on education using school forests to identify the problems with the existing education using school forests, and conducted interviews with experts to analyze the demands. we proposed an educational method that can utilize the school forests via IT convergence, and explored its validity through content reviews conducted by experts. The findings of this study are as follows. First, we proposed the IT convergence instruction focused on hands-on activities on top of the existing educational contents. Second, we proposed IT convergence instruction that incorporates diverse materials, physical computing tools, and programming tools. Third, we presented methods for utilizing such IT convergence instruction in connection with various elements of the 2015 Revised Curriculum as well as with various other activities such as middle school free semester activities and after-school activities. The school forest is a crucial learning space for the areas related to agriculture and biotechnology. Thus, we anticipate that the IT convergence instruction proposed in this study will lead to the re-discovery and re-evaluation of a value of school forests as an educational space that contributes to fulfilling the objective of the 2015 Revised Curriculum to nurture creative convergent talent.

  • Total forest growing stock and growing stock per ha in Korea are $470\times10^6m^3\;and\;73m^3$, respectively. Those figures mean that forest growing stock was increased 4.7 times more during last 30 years. The annual production of forest biomass comes from forest tending executed by Korea Forest Service was estimated about $1.07\times10^6m^3$ M/T, which was equivalent to $0.45\%$ of total imported crude oil of Korea at 2002. The production is expected to increase and reach up to $1.9\times10^6 M/T$ till 2008. The analysis of economic feasibility showed that the production cost of wood chip(134,786Won/T) was about 30,389 Won/T higher than heat value of wood chip, 104,397 Won/T estimated from that of kerosene. For the promotion of forest bioenergy utilization, more efforts need to be given for the education and public relations to induce publicity a willingness-to-pay for the environment friendly fuels under the good understanding for the use of bioenergy. In addition, we need to provide a community-based biomass utilization program by region to allocate the role of each participant and to increase the profitability of bioenergy.

  • This paper estimates the nation wide amount of forest biomass arising from management operation for domestic forest based on the simulations that are composed of five scenarios for selecting the target area of thinning. In 2009, the forest biomass arising from thinning is estimated to be 6,642,174 $m^3$. The estimates of forest biomass in 2015 and 2018 are 5,935,140 $m^3$ and 5,682,538 $m^3$, respectively. Since the target forest for thinning policy is estimated to be decreasing, the biomass generated by thinning will decline too. The estimates of forest biomass can be used to induce more effective application of woody biomass rather than one-sided use such as raw materials for solid fuels including pellets and charcoals.

  • Forest biomass can be used as various types of raw materials such as pulp, wood pellets, solid charcoals and so on. This paper estimates the nation wide amount of forest biomass based on the projection of forest areas for its effective and economic use. Several trend equations are used in projecting the forest areas. In 2009, the forest biomass arising from thinning is estimated be 6,591,575 $m^3$. The estimates of forest biomass in 2015 and 2018 are 6,375,627 $m^3$ and 6,284,779 $m^3$, respectively. Since the forest areas are projected to be declining, the biomass generated by thinning will decrease. This implies that the new alternatives for supplying raw materials for biofuels must be prepared before then.

  • The wood pellet is standardized of woody type fuel which of small cylindrical shape that is produced compress wood remnants in process of woody processing. The pellet is critical energy which expects to increase of the amount used in future. It consumes fuel which of home, common facilities stove and boiler, district heating, and CHP, etc. This study was to develop a movable pellet manufacturing equipment that can be mounted on a truck. The pellet production volume is approximately 309kg per hour, daily output is about 2ton. One days work based on the expected revenue of approximately \268,000 feasibility is considered sufficient.

  • During the last decades, global warming from the increased amount of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide has become a major political and scientific issue. Burning fossil fuels (natural gas, coal and oil) releases $CO_2$, which is also a major cause of global warming. Among the clean environment, wood pellets are considered as promising renewable fossil fuels because of clean burning characteristics, reduction of particulate and NOx emission from combustion. In Korea, more than 50% pellets have to be imported every year because of shortage of feedstocks. On the other hand, about 80% of wood pulps are greatly dependent upon overseas products due to limited forest resources. Under this situation, this study explored how efficiently we have to use forest biomass instead of total dependence on wood as raw materials for pellets.
