  • A practice is classified into the practice as a content and the practice as a method. The former means that the practical nature of mathematical knowledge itself should be a content of mathematics and the latter means that one should teach the mathematical knowledge in such a way as the practical nature is not damaged. The practical nature of mathematics means mathematician's activity as it is actually done. Activities of the mathematician are not only discovering strict proofs or building axiomatic system but informal thinking activities such as generalization, analogy, abstraction, induction etc. In this study, it is found that the most instructive ones for the future users of mathematics are such practice as content. For the practice as a method, students might learn, by becoming apprentice mathematicians, to do what master mathematicians do in their everyday practice. Classrooms are cultural milieux and microsoms of mathematical culture in which there are sets of beliefs and values that are perpetuated by the day-to-day practices and rituals of the cultures. Therefore, the students' sense of ‘what mathematics is really about’ is shaped by the culture of school mathematics. In turn, the sense of what mathematics is really all about determines how the students use the mathematics they have learned. In this sense, the practice on which classroom instruction might be modelled is that of mathematicians at work. To learn mathematics is to enter into an ongoing conversation conducted between practitioners who share common language. So students should experience mathematics in a way similar to the way mathematicians live it. It implies a view of mathematics classrooms as a places in which classroom activity is directed not simply toward the acquisition of the content of mathematics in the form of concepts and procedures but rather toward the individual and collaborative practice of mathematical thinking.

  • The mathematical processes are strongly emphasized in 2009 revised national curriculum for mathematics and are expected to be complemented and extended in 2015 revised one. This study aims to investigate how much the processes are being implemented in mathematics classroom and select some elements which need complementation. To do this, we selected the mathematical practices of CCSSM as a reference, because it plays the corresponding role in the United States to the mathematical processes in Korea. We recognized common elements and different elements between the two and analyzed. Considering those, we searched the possibility of newer mathematical process and analyzed the 4th grade mathematics textbooks in relation to questions for mathematical practices. We provided the results of analyses and several suggestions for revising mathematics curriculum and textbooks.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the mathematical connection components of the tasks included in the trigonometric ratio unit of 3rd grade middle school textbook based on the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum and investigate teachers' perceptions and practical measures regarding these components. To this end, we analyzed the characteristics of mathematical connection tasks included in the trigonometric ratio units in nine types of 3rd grade middle school mathematics textbooks, and we conducted a questionnaire survey and interviews with one in-service math teachers in pre interview and with two in-service math teachers in this interview to investigate their perceptions and practical measures. As a result of the study, the number of tasks with external connection in the trigonometric ratio unit were less than those of internal connection. In addition, in terms of teachers' perceptions and practical measures, the perspective of analyzing tasks with mathematical connections varied depending on the teacher's perspective, and the practical measures varied accordingly. These findings are significant in that they reveal the relationship between mathematical tasks, teacher perceptions and measures to foster effectively students' mathematical connections.

  • Common Core State Standards for Mathematics(CCSSM) is a blueprint for school mathematics in 2010s of the United States. CCSSM can be divided into two major parts, the standards for mathematical content and the standards for mathematical practice. This study focused on the latter. Mathematical practice comes from the mathematical process in 'Principles and standards for school mathematics(NCTM, 2000)' as well as the mathematical proficiency in 'Adding it up(NRC, 2001)'. It is composed of eight standards which mathematically proficient students are expected to do. From Korean perspective, it can also be comparable with the mathematical process which contains mathematical problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and mathematical communication and was provided by the 2009 revised national curriculum for mathematics in Korea. However, few focused the standards for mathematical practice among the studies related to CCSSM in Korea. Moreover, there is a study that even ignores the existence of the standards for mathematical practice itself. This study aims to understand the standards for mathematical practice through analysing the document of CCSSM and its successive materials for implementing the CCSSM. This understanding will help effective implementation of the mathematical process in Korea.

  • This study is to establish the items on instructional evaluation based on the teacher's practical knowledge in mathematics educations. Namely, this study deals with the items on how pre-service or in-service teachers reflect and revise their own or peer's class. To accomplish this, first of all the items on instructional evaluation was developed by researchers of this study on the basis of the results of two previous study. One is the literature of Elbaz(1981) and the other is the literature of Hwang(2013). Elbaz(1981) defined the definition of practical knowledge and five sub-domains of the practical knowledge. On the other hand, Hwang(2013) defined the teacher knowledge in mathematics education and four sub-domains of the teacher knowledge. According to these four domains, Hwang(2013) developed the items on the instructional evaluation in mathematics class. From now on, based on these two study, this study was to develop the items on the instructional evaluation involving the practical knowledge. Futhermore, the final and ideal items on the instruction would be established through the reflection and comments of professionals such as mathematics teachers, professors, and researchers.

  • As the limitations of professional development programs and individual attempts to improve teaching expertise have been reported, mathematics teachers have operated various types of teacher learning communities as alternative teacher professional programs. A teacher learning community can be considered a Community of Practice(CoP) in that it satisfies three factors of Cop, which are common purpose, mutual participation, and shared repertoire, so the 'learning' of a teacher community can be interpreted based on the theory of CoP. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of identity development of five mathematics teachers who have been continuously involved in teacher communities. For this, the researcher collected data on the entire process of community activities through participant observation and conducted individual follow-up interviews to explore mathematics teachers' narratives and personal experiences. Results indicated that mathematics teachers experienced the development of practical knowledge related to mathematics teaching and learning, improvement of teaching practice through continuous reflection and introspection, and recognization the shared value of togethering through community immersion. Based on these experiences, implications for the effective operation of learning communities such as national support of teacher learning communities and horizontal and cooperative teacher norms were discussed, and follow-up research was proposed.
