  • A numerical model of three-dimensional soil water distribution for drip irrigation management under cropped conditions was developed using Richards equation in Cartesian coordinates. The model accounts for both seasonal and diurnal changes in evaporation and transpiration, and the growth of plant root and the shape of root zone. Solutions were numerically approximated using the Crank-Nicolson implicit finite difference technique on the block-centered grid system and the Gauss-Seidel elimination in tandem. The model was tested under several conditions to allow the flow rates and configurations of drip emitters vary. In general, simulation results agreed well with experimental results and were as follows. The velocity of soil-water flow decreased drastically with distance from the drip source, and the rate of expansion of the wetted zone decreased rapidly during irrigation. The wetting front of wetted zone from a surface drip emitter traveled farther in vertical direction than in horizontal direction. Under this experimental weather condition, water use efficiency of a drip-irrigated apple field was greatest for 4-drip-emitter system buried at 25 cm, resulting from 10% increase in transpiration but 20% reduction in soil evaporation compared to those for surface 1-drip emitter system. Soil moisture retention curve obtained using disk tension infiltrometer showed significant difference from the curve obtained with pressure plate extractor.

  • The PM synchronous motor drives with vector control have been applied to wide fields of industry applications due to its high efficiency. The rotor position information for vector control of a PM synchronous motor is detected from the rotor position sensors or rotor position estimators. The sensorless control based on the mathematical model of PM synchronous motor is generally used and it can be classified into back EMF -based sensorless control and magnet flux-based sensorless control. The rotor position estimating performance of the back EMF-based sensorless control is deteriorated at low speeds since the magnitude of back EMF is proportional to the motor speed. The magnitude of the magnet flux for estimating rotor position in the flux-based sensorless control is independent on the motor speed so that the estimating performance is excellent for wide speed ranges. However, the estimation performance of the model-based sensorless control may be influenced by the motor parameter variation since the rotor position estimator uses the mathematical model of the PM synchronous motor. In this paper, the rotor position estimation performance for the back EMF based- and flux-based sensorless controls is analyzed theoretically and is compared through the simulation and experiment when the motor parameters including stator resistance and inductance are varied.

  • In the treatment of spent high energetic materials, the issues such as environmental pollution, safety as well as working capacity should be carefully considered and well examined. In this regard, incineration has been recommended as one of the most promising processes for the disposal of such explosives. Due to the fact that high energetic materials encompass various types and their different characteristics, the technology development dealing with various materials is not an easy task. In this study, rigorous modeling and dynamic simulation was carried out to predict dynamic physico-chemical phenomena for research department explosive (RDX). Plug flow reactor was employed to describe the incinerator with 263 elementary reactions and 43 chemical species. Simulation results showed that safe operations can be achieved mainly by controlling the reactor temperature. At 1,200 K, only thermal decomposition (combustion) occurred, whereas increasing temperature to 1,300 K, caused the reaction rates to increase drastically, which led to ignition. The temperature further increased to 3,000 K which was the maximum temperature recorded for the entire process. Case studies for different operating temperatures were also executed and it was concluded that the modeling approach and simulation results will serve as a basis for the effective design and operation of RDX incinerator.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the philosophical position of various scientific theories based on the scientific worldviews for science education. In addition, it aims to expand science education, which has usually dealt with epistemology and methodology, to ontology, that is, to the problem of metaphysics. It can be said that there exists a physical realism, traditionally defined as a strong determinism of the metaphysical belief. That is fixed and unchanging objective scientific knowledge independent of our minds, which was established by Newton, Einstein and Schridinger. What can be seen in the natural laws of dynamics can be called 'mathematicization'. Einstein also shook the traditional views to some extent through the theory of relativity, but his theory was still close to traditional thinking. On the contrary, to escape from this rigid determinism, we need anthropomorphic concepts such as 'possibility' and 'chance'. It is a characteristic of the modern scientific worldviews that leads the change of scientific theory from a classically strong deterministic thought to a weak deterministic accidental accident, probability theory, and a naturalistic point of view. This can be said to correspond to Darwin's theory of evolution and quantum mechanics. We can have three types of epistemological worlds that justify this ontological worldviews. These are rationalism, empiricism and naturalism. In many cases, science education does not tell us what kind of metaphysical beliefs the scientific theories we deal with in the field of education are based on. Also, science education focuses only on the understanding of scientific knowledge. However, it can be said that true knowledge can bring understanding only when it is connected to the knowledge of learned knowledge and the learner's own metaphysical belief in the world. Therefore, in the future, science education needs to connect various scientific theories based on scientific worldviews and philosophical position and present them to students.

  • This paper has concentrated on estimating the possibility and mathematical analysis for the application of BFB to the treatment of nightsoil with low dilution rate. The experiment for the study of this purpose was conducted by continuous type reactor at $20^{\circ}C$, varying F/M ratio from 0.12 to 0.37 and dilution ratio from 2 to 10, and in it provided matted reticulated polypropylene sheets for the solid supports. The obtained results showed that the application of BFB to the treatment of nightsoil would be more effective than any other biological treatment process. Also, it has observed that the optimum dilution ratio was about 5 times and the optimum HRT was about 17 hours, and then it was estimated that the reactor volume and the quantity of weak water could be reduced to the extent of 70 percent and 80 percent. The experimental results of BFB could be analysed by the mathematical models applied to complete mixing activated sludge process. The substrate removal rates which were obtained by McKinney's($K_m$) and EcKenfelder's($K_e$) equation was 1.784/hr and $2.0{\times}10l/mg{\cdot}day$, and substrate was removed very rapidly compared to those of conventional type biological treatment processes. The biomass yield coefficient($a_5$), the endogeneous respiration rate(b), the synthesis oxygen demand rate($a{_5}^{\prime}$), and the endogeneous respiration oxygen demand rate(b') were 0.349, 0.0237/day, 0.495 and 0.0336, respectively.

  • The analysis targeted the curriculum of general, subject education, and apecial activities that are required for SW education of 11 universities of education where SWEET project is applied. The results showed that the average credits related to SW education in elementary school teacher training institutions were 2.2 for general, 2.3 for subject education, and 0.6 for special activities. As a result of analyzing the changes in the curriculum by year, it can be interpreted as an effect of the SWEET project because the proportion of credits and hours in subject education increased and because the proportions of general and special activities decreased. However, on average, the credit related to SW education was 5.1, whereas the credits related to mathematics and science were 6.5 and 7.8, respectively, which indicated a need for revising and improving the curriculum for SW education.

  • This study is to investigate student's processes of problem solving using open-ended Geometric problems to understand student's thinking and behavior. One 8th grader participated in performing her learning in 5 lessons for June in 2006. The result of the study was documented according to Polya's four problem solving stages as follows: First, the student tended to neglect the stage of "understanding" a problem in the beginning. However, the student was observed to make it simplify and relate to what she had teamed previously Second, "devising a plan" was not simply done. She attempted to solve the open-ended problems with more various ways and became to have the metacognitive knowledge, leading her to think back and correct her errors of solving a problem. Third, in process of "carrying out" the plan she controled her solving a problem to become a better solver based on failure of solving a problem. Fourth, she recognized the necessity of "looking back" stage through the open ended problems which led her to apply and generalize mathematical problems to the real life. In conclusion, it was found that the student enjoyed her solving with enthusiasm, building mathematical belief systems with challenging spirit and developing mathematical power.

  • In the robust optimization field, the robustness of the objective function emphasizes an insensitive design. In general, the robustness of the objective function can be achieved by reducing the change of the objective function with respect to the variation of the design variables and parameters. However, in conventional methods, when an insensitive design is emphasized, the performance of the objective function can be deteriorated. Besides, if the numbers of the design variables are increased, the numerical cost is quite high in robust optimization for nonlinear programming problems. In this research, the robustness index for the objective function and a process of robust optimization are proposed. Moreover, a method using the supremum of linearized functions is also proposed to reduce the computational cost. Mathematical examples are solved for the verification of the proposed method and the results are compared with those from the conventional methods. The proposed approach improves the performance of the objective function and its efficiency.

  • To calculate the induced charge of atoms in molecular dynamics, linear equations for the induced charges need to be solved. As induced charges are determined at each time step, the process involves considerable computational costs. Hence, an efficient method for calculating the induced charge distribution is required when analyzing large systems. This paper introduces the Uzawa method for solving saddle point problems, which occur in linear systems, for the solution of the Lagrange equation with constraints. We apply the accelerated Uzawa algorithm, which reduces computational costs noticeably using the Schur complement and preconditioned conjugate gradient methods, in order to overcome the drawback of the Uzawa parameter, which affects the convergence speed, and increase the efficiency of the matrix operation. Numerical models of molecular dynamics in which two gold nanoparticles are placed under external electric fields reveal that the proposed method provides improved results in terms of both convergence and efficiency. The computational cost was reduced by approximately 1/10 compared to that for the Gaussian elimination method, and fast convergence of the conjugate gradient, as compared to the basic Uzawa method, was verified.
