This study analyzes behavior of bearing capacity of open-ended pipe pile from laboratory experiment results. Unlike the conventional pipe piles, cone penetration is implemented into the inside of the pipe pile. During the cone penetration, cone driving energy helps densification of plugged soils and soils below the pile end. Sand pluviator was used to obtain homogeneous soil layers. Two kinds of piles with different pile outer surface roughness were prepared, and two different drop heights of pile driving were applied. Eight experimental cases varying pile outer surface roughness, pile driving energy for conventional and cone penetration implemented piles were conducted. From the experiments, ultimate load of the pile increased approximately by 70% for increased pile driving height, and it increased by 21% for rougher surface pile. When cone penetration is implemented, the ultimate load increased by 40% in average.
This paper investigates the effectiveness of quick lime piles for soft ground improvement. The field tests based on the results of the laboratory test were performed, and the results of field tests were compared with those of numerical analyses(FEM). The results of the field test showed that the domestic quick lime was very effective in reducing the water contents of the surrounding ground quickly due to its characteristics such as digestion, absorption, and exothermic reactions. Accordingly, consolidation occurred without any additional load increment and the shear strength of surrounding ground was increased more than twice. Therefore the quick lime pile method could be considered as an excellent improvement technique reducing the improvement period for soft ground. For the practical applications of the quick lime pile method, issues such as hydration heat, particulation and equipment enhancement should be solved through continuous research and development.

We consider an infinite dam with inputs formed by a compound Poisson process and adopt a $P^M_{\lambda}$-policy to control the level of water, where the water is released at rate M when the level of water exceeds threshold ${\lambda}$. We obtain interesting stationary properties of the level of water, when the amount of each input independently follows an exponential distribution. After assigning several managing costs to the dam, we derive the long-run average cost per unit time and show that there exist unique values of releasing rate M and threshold ${\lambda}$ which minimize the long-run average cost per unit time. Numerical results are also illustrated by using MATLAB.

The purpose of this study is to compare calculated pollutant loadings using pollutant load unit factors and vector type coverage, and expected mean concentration(EMC) and raster type of digital elevation model(DEM). This study is also focusing on comparison of the advantages and the disadvantages of the two methods, and seeking for a method of calculation of pollutant loadings using DEM. Estimation of pollutant inputs using pollutant load unit factors has limitations in identifying seasonal variations of pollutant loadings. Seasonal changes of runoffs should be considered in the calculation of pollutant loadings from catchments into reservoirs. Evaluation of pollutant inputs using runoff-coefficient and EMC can overcome these drawbacks. Proper EMC and runoff-coefficient values for the Koeup stream catchments of the Koheung estuarine lake were drawn from review of related papers. Arc/Info was employed to establish database of spatial and attribute data of point and non-point pollutant sources and characteristics of the catchments. ArcView was used to calculate point and non-point pollutant loadings. Pollutant loads estimated with either unit factors-coverages, i.e., pollutant load unit factors and vector coverages f point sources and land use, or EMC and digital elevation mode(DEM) were compared with stream monitoring loads. We have found that some differences were shown between monitoring results and estimated loads by Unit Factors-Coverage and EMC-DEM. Monthly variations of pollutant loads evaluated with EMC-DEM were similar to those with monitoring result. The method using EMC-DEM can calculate accumulated flows and pollutant loads and can be utilized to identify stream networks. A future research on correcting the difference between vector type stream using flow direction grid and digitalizing vector type should be conducted in order to obtain more exact calculation of pollutant loadings.

Up to now, common studies of top base have concentrated upon bearing capacity and settlement by in-situ loading test in Japan and Korea. But most of all preceding study for top base must analyze how to deliver overburden loading on bottom of foundation. Therefore, in this study, the stress delivery mechanism of Top-Base Foundation developed in Japan and Floating Top Base developed in Korea is investigated through numerical analysis and laboratory model test. Analyzing the load delivery mechanism of top base, it was found that the division rate of load reduction of top base for overburden load was largest in peripheral skin friction between the top base and the crushed stone. Further, total stress dispersion angle of Top-Base Foundation including internal stress dispersion effect of top base was $41.8^{\circ}$ and total stress dispersion angle of Floating Top Base was $44.5^{\circ}$.
The objectives of this study are to analyze flow characteristics for a side weir, which is an inlet structure for flow discharge reduction in the main channel through 3 dimensional numerical analysis and to understand the efficiency of the overflow effect at the side weir. In this study over 40 simulations using FLOW-3D, a computational fluid dynamics program were conducted, and the results were analyzed to find the influence of the flow hydraulics, geometry, channel and weir shapes on the coefficient. It is especially considered the relatively high stage in downstream that may cause flow within channel to be backed up along the channel. Additionally by setting up the scale of simulations much larger than the existing test equipment designed by other researchers, it is intended to analyze more accurate hydraulic behavior along with the realistic hydraulic features such as structures and volumes of flow. The results show that for design with subcritical flow only if the Froude number of upstream is sustained below 0.5 and the length of weir is 33-100% of the width of channel, it is expected to improve the efficiency of the overflow over a side weir.

On July 12. 1993 at 22 : 17 local time (-9h. KST). an earthquake of surface magnitude (MS) 7.6 occurred on the west coast of the Hokkaido and small of offshore island of Okushiri in the East Sea. A major tsumani was generated and within 2 to 5 minutes, extremely large tsunami waves engulfed the Okushiri coastal area and the central west roast of the Hokkaido. This tsunami caused tremendous casualities and damage. A giant tsunami runup of more than 30 m in height was recorded. The tsunami crossed the East Sea and feeled at 27 sites of the eastern Korean coast during the survey on 17-19, July, 1993. The observed tsunami runup at southern part of the eastern Korean coast were generally weaker than the 1993 Japan Sea Central Earthquake tsunami and varied from 0.8 m to 2.6 m. The Present Paper intends to understand the propagation on this tsunami with the aid of numerical computation model andd computer graphic aided video animation.

Finite element grid refinements with different intensities having 14 K, 52 K and 211 K on the Yellow Sea (YS) have been constructed to make precise tidal simulations. In the meanwhile 57 K grid was made to the extended North Western Pacific (NWP) sea. Numerical simulation were done based on 32 parallel processors by using pADCIRC v 49.21 model. In the YS tidal simulation on YS-G52K and YS-G211K grid structure, KorBathy30s and ETOPO1 bathymetry data are used and 4 major tidal constituents are prescribed from FES2004. Computed results are in good agreement within 0.138 meter in RMS error for amplification and 14.80 degree of phase compared to observed tidal records. Similar error bounds are acquired in the extended NWP tidal simulation on NWP-G57K grid with 8 tidal constituent prescription on the open boundary.

Sea level rise and increase of the typhoon/hurricane intensity due to global warming have threaten coastal areas for residential and industrial and have been widely studied. In this study we showed our recent efforts on sea wind which is one of critical factors for safe maritime traffic and prediction for storm surges and waves. Currently, most of numerical weather models in korea do not have sufficient spatial and temporal resolutions, therefore we set up a find grid(about 9km) sea wind prediction system that predicts every 12 hours for three day using Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF). This system covers adjacent seas around korean peninsula Comparisons of two observed data, Ieodo Ocean Research station(IORS) and Yellow Sea Buoy(YSB), showed reasonable agreements and by data assimilation we will improve better accurate sea winds in near future.

The effects of braking of trains and roughness of rails on the dynamic behavior of bridges are studied. The train-bridge interaction is considered by solving Lagrange's equation of motions. Newmark's direct integration is used to solve the governing equations. Dynamic train loads acting on piers at each time step are evaluated, and the wheel-rail roughness effect is considered by using the PSD curve of the rail. The model of braking forces in bridge section is based on the change of deceleration mentioned in ASTM(American Society for Testing and Materials) E503-82. Only skidding frictions without considering rolling frictions are modeled, and the friction coefficient of 0.25 is assumed. Parametric studies in a simply supported PC Box girder bridge are carried out to verify the present method and to analyze the effects of train speed, wheel-rail roughness, braking forces on dynamic train loads.
