  • To design the shear connections for vertical construction joints of slurry walls, it is necessary to create a force-displacement curve that represents the structural performance of the shear connections. This paper proposes a method for preparing the force-displacement curve of the shear connections including major considerations.

  • Many routes have been developed for the synthesis of signle-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). We spun fibers of SWCNTs directly from vertical furnace using a liquid source of carbon and an iron-contained molecule. The solution was prepared by ethanol as a carbon source, in which ferrocene as a catalyst, thiophene were dissolved. It was then injected from the top of the furnace into hot zone with hydrogen as a carrier gas. We successfully synthesized high-quality SWCNTs by adjusting the various experimental conditions, such as concentration of ferrocene, solution injection rate, concentration of thiophene, and hydrogen flow rate. Measurement of Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were carried out to find the optimized conditions. The synthesized SWCNTs (1.16~1.64 nm) appeared a bundle structure and well-aligned parallel to the direction of furnace. These results also provide an simple way for high-quality SWCNTs mass production and fabricating direct spining SWCNTs fiber. It will allow one-step production of SWCNTs fiber with potentially excellent properties and wide-range applications.

  • In the present study, a new computational closure model is proposed in order to contain physical models in the k- and .epsilon.- equations. The time scale of the third-order diffusive transport of turbulent kinetic energy in a curved streamline flow field is assumed as a function of a velocity time scale and a curvature time scale, the latter being derived from the analogy between buoyancy and streamline curvature effects on turbulence. The curvature time scale is represented by a combination of Brunt-Vaisala frequency of the curvature instability and the velocity time scale. Besides the modification of diffusive transport time scale, the destruction term in the dissipation rate equation is modeled to incorporate the streamline curvature effect on the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy as a function of the ratio between velocity time scale and curvature time scale. The new curvature dependent 2-equation model is found to yield very good prediction accuracy for the various turbulent recirculating flows. Particurarly, the recovery of the mean velocity profile in the redeveloping region after the reattachment is correctly simulated by the present model.

  • In order practically to use fire-defective glazing materials for the compartment wall where a fire-protection rating is mandated, there have been many trials internationally, This research focuses on a feasibility that, if certain water film covered all surface of glass, the glazing system can endure without breaking out under the compartment fire. First of all, a water film spray system was specially designed to wet the entire surface of the glass and also to have tiny small amount of water rebounded from the surface after emitted from nozzles. After this system has proven to have perfect performance, small-scale tests were done to find out if the water film covered glazing system react to the high temperature curve in a small furnace room. Finally, on basis of the obtained data, full-scale experiments were done so that water-film covered glazing system can pass the Korean Standard (KS) test for fire resistance, KS F2257.

  • The present study numerically investigated two-dimensional dielectrophoretic motions of a pair of particles suspended freely in a viscous fluid, interacting with a nearby nonconducting planar wall, under an external uniform electric field. The results show that the motions depend strongly on the set of two electric conductivity signs and the particles-wall separation gap. When both particles have the same sign, they revolve and finally align parallel to the electric field. In contrast, with different signs, they revolve in the opposite direction and finally align perpendicular to the field. Simultaneously, they are repelled to move farther away from the wall regardless of their conductivity set. With further separation from the wall, the particles-wall interaction effect diminishes and tthe particle-particle effect dominates.

  • Recently, a concern to verify the displacement capacity of shear wall has been arised to produce suitable data for the performance based design. In this paper, a process is presented to evaluate the displacement capacity of shear wall. The displacement of shear wall is expressed as the superposition of shear and flexural deformation. Variable crack angle truss model with a modification and sectional analysis method are used in calculating shear and flexural displacement, respectively. In addition, the effect of axial force and the contribution of vertical and horizontal reinforcements in wall are considered in the analysis. The accuracy of proposed method is evaluated by the comparison calculation results with previous test results. From the comparison, it was shown that the hysteretic behavior of shear wall could be well predicted by using the process. In the case with flange wall, however, the method overestimates the contribution of flange wall for strength and stiffness and underestimates for displacement capacity.

  • The insertion loss of the noise barriers with several top shape is measured in an anechoic room by using a reduced scale model test. The insertion loss differences between a straight vertical barrier having 0.3 m height and several barriers with simple top shaped are compared. The results show that the latter is more effective than the former and absorptive barrier is more effective than the reflective one. Among the barrier types of 'T', 'Y', and '(equation omitted)', type 'Y' is the best one and the rest have similar effect. This result is well agree with Alfredson (PIOC. Inter-Noise 95, p. 381, 1995)'s but contradict to May (J. Sound Vb. 71, p. 73, 1980)'s. Therefore, it is difficult to determine which type is the best. In order to find out this discrepancy, boundary element method is adopted and the result shows one can have different result because each supposed different experimental conditions like height of noise barrier, positions of sound source and receiver, etc.
