  • In this research, a parametric study was carried out to design a metal-carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) hybrid pantograph for weight reduction of high speed train (KTX). To design a light-weight and high-stiffness pantograph, some parts of the original steel upper arm was replaced by CFRPs with appropriate stacking sequences. For the parametric study, steel was replaced by aluminium considering structure stiffness and weight of hybrid upperarm of a pantograph. Finite element analysis (FEA) was performed for checking the structure stiffness with varying design parameters. Static vertical load stiffness and weight changing ratio were derived from real CX-PG pantograph model analyses. From the FEA results, the geometries of high-stiffness, light-weight pantograph have been suggested.

  • In this paper, we present the load-deflection behavior of GRP pipes. GRP buried pipes are widely used in construction in the advantage of their superior mechanical and physical characteristics such as high chemical resistance, high corrosion resistance, right weight, smooth surface of the pipe, and cost effectiveness from soil-structure interaction. To design flexible pipes to be buried underground, it should be based on the ASTM D2412(2010). When applying ASTM D 2412(2010) to the design, pipe stiffness(PS) must be predetermined by the parallel-plate test which requires tedious and laborious working process. To overcome such problems, the finite element simulations for finding the load-deflection behavior of the GRP flexible pipes is installed at UTM testing machine. In the finite element simulations, basic data, such as the modulus of elasticity of the material and cross-sectional dimension, is used. From the investigation, we found that the difference between experimental result and analytical prediction is less than 15% when the pipe deflected 3% and 5% of its vertical diameter although the pipe material is not uniform across the cross-section.

  • In this study, the effects of embedded optical fibers on the static properties under tensile load and dynamic properties under fatigue load of composite laminates were investigated by experimental tests and finite element analysis. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the embedded optical fiber sensors do not have significant effects on the structural integrity of the smart composite structures except when the sensors are embedded perpendicular to the adjacent reinforcing fibers under fatigue loading. An intensity-based optical fiber sensor was embedded in the crossply composite laminates to monitor the fatigue damage by detecting the stiffness changes of the laminates. The result of this experiment has shown that the intensity-based optical fiber sensor has large potential to monitor the fatigue damage of composite structures by detecting the stiffness changes of the structures with simple and inexpensive instruments and without complex post-processing of measured signals. In addition, the optical fiber sensor showed good resistance to fatigue loading and wide sensing ranges of stiffness.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of RB(rubber bearing) were studied by various prototype tests on RB with low hardness rubber. The characteristics of RB were tested on displacements, repeated cycles, frequencies, vertical pressures, temperature, vertical stiffness and the capability of shear deformation. The prototype test showed that the displacement and vertical pressures were the most governing factors influencing on characteristics of RB. The effective stiffness and equivalent damping of RB showed small increment in high frequency range. After the repeated cyclic test with 50's cycles, the effective stiffness and equivalent damping of RB were almost constant compared with those of the 1st cycles due to low hysteretic damping. The shear modulus of RB was reduced after large deformation, and this value of RB was partly recovered after 40 days. Finally, the shear failure test of RB was conducted, the prototype was failed over 490% of shear strain, and real size RB was failed over 430% of shear strain.

  • Elastomeric bearings composed of flexible rubber materials and steel reinforcement plates are widely used for seismic retrofit of bridges due to their excellent vertical stiffness and flexible lateral stiffness. Especially, it has the advantages of simple construction and low cost. Chloroprene rubber, a type of rubber material, has greater resistance to aging than natural rubber, but its performance is also degraded due to various deterioration factors. Although these aging characteristics are not reflected in the seismic design standards and seismic performance evaluation guidelines, it is reasonable to reflect this when related studies are accumulated. For chloroprene rubber, accelerated heat aging test was performed with variables of heating temperatures and exposure time to analyze shear characteristics. As aging progresses the maximum shear stress and shear strain decrease. Also, the shear stiffness is greatly increased at the same shear strain.

  • Currently, in the precast concrete construction, Precast Concrete (PC) and Cast-In-Place (CIP) concrete with different concrete strengths are frequently used. However, current design codes do not specifically provide shear design methods for PC-CIP hybrid members using dual concrete strengths. In the present study, simply supported composite beams with shear reinforcement were tested. The test variables were the area ratio of the two concretes, spacing of shear reinforcement, and shear span-to-depth ratio. The shear strengths of the test specimens were evaluated by current design codes on the basis of the test results. The results showed that the shear strength of the composite beams was affected by the concrete strength of the compressive zone and also proportional to the flexural rigidity of un-cracked sections. Furthermore, the contribution of shear reinforcements varied according to the concrete strength of the compressive zone.

  • The various systems as the seismic resistance systems are used to reduce the seismic response of structure. And the seismic isolation system among them is the system that reduces the seismic vibration to be transmitted from foundation to upper structure. The purpose of isolation system is to lengthen the period of structure and make its period shift from the dominant period of earthquake. In this study, the seismic behavior of arch structure with lead rubber bearing(LRB) and friction pendulum system(FPS) is analyzed. The arch structure is the simplest structure and has the basic dynamic characteristics among large spatial structures. Also, Large spatial structures have large vertical response by horizontal seismic vibration, unlike seismic behavior of normal rahmen structures. When horizontal seismic load is applied to the large spatial structure with isolation systems, the horizontal acceleration response of the large spatial structure is reduced and the vertical seismic response is remarkably reduced.

  • BPMN is a standard business process description notation developed by OMG. It allows the user to have an abstract view of a process that hides its details with the Collapsed Sub-Process notation. While it is a useful direction of abstraction that can be called the horizontal abstraction, a different kind of abstraction, the vertical abstraction, is necessary when different stakeholders of business would like to have different views of the business process form their own viewpoints of interest. For example, stakeholders may want to see a process from the viewpoint of a particular group of actors or from the viewpoint of a certain set of goals. This paper first extends horizontal abstraction capability of BPMN by introducing the notion of super edge and, moreover, adds the vertical abstraction capability to it by introducing the notions of 'aspect attribute' and 'interest specification' and notations for them.

  • Both the roughness measurement tests and the multi-stage shear tests were carried out on the 110 rock joint samples in order to investigate the influences of rock type, joint roughness and normal stress on the shear behaviour of rock joints. Test samples were composed of quartz porphyry, dacite, granite and gneiss, which were classified into three detailed groups according to their JRC values. Roughness parameters of rock joints were analyzed by roughness measurement tests, and shear characteristics were also investigated by multi-stage shear tests. Both peak shear strength and shear stiffness were increased as both joint roughness and normal stress were increased, whereas dilation angles showed lower values at the lower roughness and higher normal stress conditions. Besides, shear characteristics obtained from all tests of four different rock types with different rock strengths showed irrelevant details, therefore the influences of both joint roughness and normal stress on shear behaviors were found to be more considerable than the strength of intact rock. The results obtained from both multi-stage shear tests and direct shear tests were finally compared, where the dilation angles obtained from multi-stage shear tests were found to be valid only for the first normal stress conditions.

  • The automotive seat is an important component that moves in sync with the driver and is actively being developed with various new functions. The aim of this work is to develop a lightweight seat cushion extension module using a lightweight material. To this end, a structural strength analysis, vertical strength test, and durability test were conducted. In the structural analysis, the maximum value of deformation under vertical load was 4.98 mm at the front of the upper panel. The maximum stress was approximately 105 MPa, which occurred at the point of contact between the upper and lower panels of the module. The vertical strength test showed a maximum vertical deformation of 5.31 mm under a vertical load, which differed from the analysis results by approximately 6.45%. The structural safety of the product was verified by the fact that it showed no harmful deformation or damage during operation after the vertical strength test and a durability test for 20,000 cycles. Furthermore, the use of engineering plastics made it possible to reduce the weight by approximately 30% compared to existing products. The lack of damage after tests verified the passenger safety, strength, and rigidity of the product. The results are expected to be applied for improving environmental and fuel efficiency regulations and preventing accidents due to driver fatigue. The applications of this module could be expanded various types of vehicles, as well as other industries in which eco-friendly and lightweight materials are used.
