Wet underwater arc welding process is investigated by using experimentally developed flux coated underwater arc welding electrode and SS400 steel plate of 12mm thickness as base metal. Three kinds of different flux covered wet arc welding electrode of 4mm diameter(BK-01, BK-02, BK-03) are individually developed, and one of the improved underwater welding electrode (BK-03) may be put to practical use for underwater wet arc welding process. The results obtained from this experimental study are as follows : 1. Arc stability of developed underwater wet welding electrode is better than that of the domestic covered arc welding electrode. 2. Workability of welding electrode, remove ability of slag and bead appearances using improved underwater wet welding electrode are remarkably better than that of others. 3. Heat affected zone of test specimen welded in the underwater gets to become a lot smaller than that of test specimen welded in the air, and the maximum hardness of heat affect zone of developed underwater wet welding electrode is lower to that of domestic arc welding electrode.
A torch was designed and fabricated in order to develope the technology of "locally drying underwater welding" by water curtain method. The condition for the formation of the possible local cavity, the mechanical properties and the thermal cycle of welds were investigated in the developed welding equipment compared with in-air welding. The possibility of highly reliable and practical underwater welding was found. The proper local cavity was formed above the water flowrate of 30l/min and CO$_{2}$ gas flowrate of 100l/min. The bead width and penetration depth were increased with increasing welding current. The hardness of weldments is about 160Hv in air welding, but about 210Hv in underwater welding. The elongation and the impact value of underwater weldments are 15% and 6Kg/cm$^{2}$ respectively, which are only half as much as the values of in-air welding. The cooling time in the temperature range from 800.deg.C to 500.deg.C affecting the structure and the hardness of weldments is about 22sec. in air welding while about 10sec. in underwater welding.r welding.
Magnesium is one of the light weight materials, which can improve fuel economy and reduce emissions in automotive industry. Recently, magnesium alloys have gained considerable attention due to good mechanical properties. In this work, we have performed an explosive welding using the magnesium alloys (AZ31) and stainless steel (SUS 304). As a result, SUS304/AZ31 were successfully combined each other; however, a resolidified interlayer was observed at the point of welded layer. To reduce the resolidified interlayer, we have changed the thickness (0.5 mm and 1 mm) of stainless steel, distance (45 mm and 60 mm) between explosive and the center of materials and initial angle ($20^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$) of explosive. In the case of the thickness 0.5 mm and angle of $30^{\circ}$, the resolidfied interlayer was not observed due to the increase of distance from the explosive. To accurately estimate the resolidified interlayer, electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) method and hardness were used. For the EPMA analysis, mixed materials were confirmed at the resolidified interlayer, and the measurement exhibited the middle value compared with the AZ31 and SUS304.
In this paper, an attempt has been taken for improving the weldability of wer welds of TMCP steel plate by shielding around weld arc surroundings. The principal results of this experimental investigation can be summarized as follows: 1) The cooling rates resulting from wet wlds with the developed electrode on TMCP steel plate could be lower than that of the non-shieled wet welds. 2) The metallurgical characteristics in umderwater wet welds of TMCP steel plate and the developed electrode could be improved by shielding around weld arc surroundings.

Underwater wet arc welding process was experimentally investigated by using the six types of flux coated electrodes of 3.2 mm diameter and the KR-RA steel plate of 11 mm thickness as base metal. Two types of electrodes were domestic covered arc welding electrode(CR13, CR14) and another two types of wet welding electrodes(UWCS, TN20)were imported goods, and the other two type (UWX1, UWX2) were individually designed flux coated electrodes for experimental welding purpose. Main experimental results are summerized as follows: 1. It is ascertained that individually designed flux coated electrode(UWX1) could be used in practice with KR-RA steel plate for underwater wet arc bead welds. 2. Welding arc can be generated easily and considerably kept in stable using TN20 and UWX1 electrodes. 3. The micro Vickers hardness value and the portion of martensite in the HAZ were increased in all the electrodes by rapid cooling rate, but it is relatively maintain stable for UWCS, TN20 and UWX1 electrodes.

The repair welding of small leakage parts on the water pipeline in engine room is often and important factor in standby and emergency condition in a ship. So, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the corrosion characteristics of welding part of leakage water pipe in case of some underwater welding electrodes. The corrosion current density between welding metal and base metal was considerably different according to used underwater welding electrodes. In case of DC welding, its corrosion characteristics was better than that of AC welding.
The characteristics of underwater welding of SWS490 steel were investigated. The bead-on-plate type welding with one or three pass using ilmenite and water-proofed type electrodes was performed by varying welding currents and the sizes of electrodes used. The amounts of hydrogen absorbed inter the weld metal were measured according to the JIS Z 3118 specification and the results were interpreted in terms of the cold cracking behaviours of the welded steel. The microstructural changes as well as the microhardness distribution after underwater welding were also investigated using Vickers microhardness tester and S.E.M (scanning electron microscopy) and O.M (optical microscopy). The results indicated that the cold cracking could be avoided by three pass welding under low current with an electrode with a small diameter.
Theoretical backgrounds on the experimental methods of explosive welding, explosive forming and shock consolidation of powders are introduced. Explosive welding experiments of titanium (Ti) and stainless steel (SUS 304) plate were carried out. It was revealed that a series of waves of metal jet are generated in the contact surface between both materials; and that the optimal collision velocity and collision angle is about 2,100~2,800 m/s and $15{\sim}20^{\circ}$, respectively. Also, explosive forming experiments of Al plate were performed and compared to a conventional press forming method. The results confirmed that the shock-loaded Al plate has a larger curvature deformation than those made using conventional press forming. For shock consolidation of powders, the propagation behaviors of a detonation wave and underwater shock wave generated by explosion of an explosive are investigated by means of numerical calculation. The results revealed that the generation and convergence of reflected waves occur at the wall and center position of water column, and also the peak pressure of the converged reflected waves was 20 GPa which exceeds the detonation pressure. As results from the consolidation experiments of metal/ceramic powders ($Fe_{11.2}La_2O_3Co_{0.7}Si_{1.1}$), shock-consolidated $Fe_{11.2}La_2O_3Co_{0.7}Si_{1.1}$ bulk without cracks was successfully obtained by adapting the suggested water container and strong bonding between powder particles was confirmed through microscopic observations.

The pre-heat free consumables for GMAW, SAW and FCAW processes that matches the Cu-bearing PFS-700 steel which has yield strength over 700MPa were developed and evaluated to see the suitability in military such as submarine and battle ship. Explosion bulge test in underwater was developed and applied to see the reliability of welded structure. All welding was conducted without pre-heat before welding, the interpass temperature was below $150^{\circ}C$ for all welding conditions. Tensile strength for the weld metal in GMAW, SAW and FCAW process is 887MPa, 875MPa and 813MPa, respectively, these values are similar to the base metal of PFS-700 steel of 838MPa. EBT results in GMAW, SAW and FCAW show 14.0%, 14.02% and 15.9% reduction of thickness without generation of crack, respectively and stand-off distance was set up properly to have over 14.0% reduction of thickness. Through EBT results, the developed new consumables are applicable to the weapon systems such as submarine and battle ship.
