There are few studies on toxic metals in crustaceans available in Korea. Therefore, this study was conducted to estimate content of toxic metals in crustaceans (n=58). Samples were digested with acids and analysed by inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP) or atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) for lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As). Mercury (Hg) contents were determined using mercury analyzer. Toxic metal contents [minimum-maximum (mean), mg/kg] in crustaceans were as follows; Hg 0.004-0.28 (0.06), Pb ND-0.31 (0.03), Cd 0.003-0.92 (0.14), and As 0.01-35.9 (6.63). Our results demonstrated that metal contents in crustaceans on Korean markets were similar to those reported in other countries. Our average weekly intakes of Pb, Cd, and Hg from crustaceans were lower than 1% of Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intakes (PTWI) set by Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee for food safety evaluation.

The trace-level mercury in bio-materials has been determinated by the anodic stripping square wave voltammetry (ASSWV)-technique at glassy carbon electrode. Prior to the analysis, the bio-materials were digested with $HNO_3/H_2SO_4$ mixture and KMnO4 was added to complete an oxidation process of the mixture. The detection limit of the mercury varied greatly with deposition time, deposition potential, pH and stirring rate. When the deposition was carried out for 240 sec on 400 rpm stirring at -1.0 volts vs. Ag/AgCl, the detection limit was below 0.5 ppb ($2.5{\times}10^{-9}M$). The accumulated mercury was high in the kidney and liver, and low in the brain according to the determination of mercury accumulation for a white rat by this method.
The electrochemical reduction of iodine in non-aqueous media have been studied by polarography, chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry at dropping mercury electrode and platinum, gold and amalgamated platium electrodes. In amphiprotic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, isopropanol and pyridine, iodine were reduced to iodide ions via one step reduction involving 1 electron and in aprotic solvents such as acetonitrile, dimethylformamide and dimethylsulfoxide via two step reduction involving all 3 electrons. The reductions of iodine give well defined polarograms at dropping mercury electrode and irreversible chronopotentiograms at platinum electrode, but less defined irreversible chronopotentiograms at gold and amalgamated platinum electrodes, those are all diffusion controlled. The diffusion coefficients of iodine in various solvents were estimated from the chronopotentiometric data and Sand equation.

A total of 100 seafoods commonly consumed in Gyeonggi-do were investigated to determine the concentration of lead (Pb), total mercury (Hg), methyl mercury (MeHg), cadmium (Cd) and selenium (Se). Concentration of heavy metals and selenium was measured by using mercury analyzer, ICP-MS and GC-ECD. The average content (mg/kg) of heavy metals in the seafood samples was as follows; Pb 0.0915 (0.0021-0.4490), Cd 0.0084 (ND-0.1773), and Hg 0.0412 (0.0013-0.3032). All the levels were below the recommended standards of the MFDS in Pb (0.5 mg/kg), Cd (0.2 mg/kg), Hg (0.5 mg/kg). The methylmercury was detected in the hairtail (0.0677 mg/kg) and cod (0.2941 mg/kg). After the average content of heavy metals in seafood was determined, the exposure assessment for heavy metals was conducted. Relative hazardous levels compared to PTWI were lower than the official standards of the JECFA for Pb (0.97%), Hg (3.42%) Cd (0.45%). In conclusion, the levels presented in this study are presumed to be safe for consumption.
This study aims to analyze 19 kinds of mineral contents in hair targeting 311 people in Seoul who suffer from hair loss. The results are as follows: 1. The average contents of all kinds of minerals were within the standards. 2. Sodium, potassium, and selenium were more detected in men than in women; calcium, magnesium, copper, and manganese were more detected in women than in men; toxic elements, mercury, antimony, and arsenic were more detected in men than in women, which was statistically significant. 3. As the age increased, potassium (p<.05), iron (p<.01), manganese (p<.05), chromium (p<.01), and mercury (P<0.01) increased gradually, which was statistically significant. In particular, the content of mercury exceeded its standard in those over fifty. 4. Selenium (p<.01), lead (p<.05), aluminum (p<.05), and arsenic (p<.01) were more detected in natural hair than in permanent or colored hair. Calcium (p<.001), magnesium (p<.001), and manganese (p<.01) were more detected in permanent or colored hair than in natural hair. They were all statistically significant.

In this study, total mercury (THg) of Black-tailed Gull (Larus crassirostris) eggs laid on Baengnyeongdo, West Sea of Korea was analyzed in order to compare the THg concentrations of eggs depending on egg-laying order. The first-laid eggs ($mean{\pm}standard$ error, $234.4{\pm}11.2ng/g\;wet$, n=18, t=8.4, p<0.01) significantly had higher THg concentrations than the second-laid eggs ($182.8{\pm}9.1ng/g\;wet$, n=18). Also, the first-laid eggs had higher values in biometrics (length $63.10{\pm}0.49mm$, t=2.4, p<0.05; width $44.51{\pm}0.19mm$, t=4.3, p<0.01; weight $65.53{\pm}0.87g$, t=4.2, p<0.01) than the second-laid eggs (length $62.37{\pm}0.40mm$, width $43.55{\pm}0.17mm$, and weight $62.48{\pm}0.72g$). These differences might be attributed to the amount of food eaten by females relating to males' courtship feeding pattern (males increase courtship feeding rate before the first eggs are laid, and decrease the rate following the laying of the first eggs). Moreover, the lower food intake of females could diminish the quantities of egg albumen that contains a protein binds to most of methylmercury during the period of egg production. Therefore, it is necessary to consistently apply one of egg selection methods (targeted selection (the first-laid egg or the second-laid egg), random selection, and etc.) in one nest for ensuring comparability of mercury concentrations among monitoring sites and monitoring years.

In order to assure the safety of the seaweeds, we measured the contents of the trace metals in the seaweeds harvested from Korean coastal area. We collected 620 marine algal samples from fourteen areas, and then analyzed the trace metals such as Hg, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. The contents of Hg, Cd, Ni and Mn were higher in the seaweeds collected from Chungnam Taean area. The contents of Cr and Cu were higher in the seaweeds collected from Yeongdeok and Tongyeong area, respectively. And Pb and Zn were highly detected from the seaweeds of Ulsan area. The mean levels of trace metals were high in the order of Zn $(48.02\pm41.20{\mu}g/g)\;>\;Mn (34.63\pm38.95{\mu}g/g)\;>\;Cu(6.29\pm6.52{\mu}g/g)\;>\;Ni(2.17\pm4.00{\mu}g/g)\; >\;Cr(1.61\pm2.35{\mu}g/g)\;>\;Pb(1.28\pm2.37{\mu}g/g)\;>\; Cd(0.67\pm0.75{\mu}g/g)\;>\;Hg(0.02\pm0.02{\mu}g/g)$. Zn was consistently most abundant metal in all samples, followed by Mn and Cu, which are very important for human health. There were higher contents of Hg and Cd in brown algae, the contents of Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni and Pb in green algae, the content of Zn in red algae among them. Additionally, significant linear correlations were observed between a total 28 different pairs of metals, of them, the correlation factor between Cr and Ni showed the highest (r=0.374, p<0.001). The trace metal contents of seaweeds varied with habitats and kinds of samples, nevertheless they showed very safe level in edible seaweeds tested. Scytosiphon lomentaria, which has been known as a little use of food, have shown a clear selectivity for Cr and Pb. Among non-edible seaweeds, Sargassum thunbergii for both Cd and Mn, Lomentaria hakodatensis for Ni and Grateloupia prolongata for Zn have shown a clear selectivity, respectively. Therefore, these seaweeds could be useful as bioindicator for each trace metal pollution.
Vacuum laboratory in Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) was opened in 1983 for establishing and disseminating vacuum standard in Korea. The major three systems such as the ultrasonic interferometer manometer (UIM), the static expansion system (SES) and the dynamic expansion system (DES) with orifice and porous plug conductance are developed. In this study, the standard systems from low to ultra-high vacuum, uncertainty analysis by ISO regulation, and key and bilateral comparison results will be described.
The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) has three major vacuum systems: an ultrasonic interferometer manometer (UIM), a static volume expansion system (SVES), and an orifice-type dynamic expansion system (ODES). For each system explict measurement model equations with multiple variables are respectively given. According to ISO standards, all these system variables errors were used to calculate the expanded uncertainty (U).
