Reproduction of Ocean Circulation around Korean Peninsula by using a Mesoscale Ocean Circulation Model (중규모 해양모형을 이용한 한반도 주변 해역 해양순환 재현)

  • In this study, the oceanic responses to given atmospheric boundary conditions are investigated using a mesoscale ocean circulation model. The numerical experiments are divided into two parts: One is, so called, spin-up experiment and the other is reproduction experiment. The spin-up experiment simulates climatic state of ocean by integrating the ocean model with upper boundary conditions of the monthly mean atmospheric climate data. In the reproduction experiment, for the reproduction of major oceanic changes around Korean Peninsula during the period of 1980-1998 (19 years), the model has been integrated under the boundary condition of the 19year monthly mean atmosphere data. The spined-up state of ocean generated from the spin-up experiment is assigned to the initial boundary condition of the reproduction experiment. In the spin-up experiment, the model properly simulates the major features of circulation structure around Korean Peninsula; such as separation of East Korean Warm Current (EKWC), formation of the polar front, cold water band associated with the small scale eddies in the East Sea, the formation of front along west coast, and the seasonal variation of circulation pattern caused by changing upwind current in the West Sea. In the reproduction experiment, the model has shown the interannual sea surface temperature variations and a warming trend of about 0.5$^{\circ}$C during the period around Korean Peninsula, as in the case of the observation. Therefore, it is concluded that the model is capable of simulating not only the mean states but also the variabilities of ocean under the given atmosphere boundary conditions.

Parturition Induction on Melania Snails, Semisulcospira libertina libertina and Semisulcospira gottschei (다슬기 (Semisulcospira libertina libertina)와 곳체다슬기 (Semisulcospira gottschei)의 출산 유도)

  • The effects of various physicochemical stimuli in parturition induction were assayed on ovoviviparous freshwater melania snails, Semisulcospira libertina libertina and S. gottschei. Both of them did not respond to $NH_4OH$ and $H_2O_2$, but showed responses to the water temperature raising, serotonin and acetylcholine. S. gottschei showed stronger responses to the stimulants in parturition induction compared with S. libertina libertina. In case of S. libertina libertina exposed to $10^{-9}M$ acetylcholine, the number of newly born larvae and juveniles per adult and juvenile parturition rate were 68 individuals and 57.5%, which were the most among experimental groups, respectively. In the parturition induction with temperature raising of $9^{\circ}C$, S. gottschei bred 113 larvae and juveniles in which juvenile parturition rate was 56.3% and $10^{-12}M$ acetylcholine also induced very high juvenile parturition rate(61.7%) and 83 larvae and juveniles. It could be concluded that the treatment of acetylcholine has a high effectiveness in the parturition induction of S. libertina libertina and S. gottschei.

  • Vitellogenesis during oogenesis, reproductive cycle and first sexual maturity of the female Neptunea (Barbitonia) arthritica cumingii was investigated by light and electron microscope observations. In the early vitellogenic oocyte, the Golgi complex and mitochondria were involved in the formation of lipid droplets and yolk granules. In late vitellogenic oocytes, the rough endoplasmic reticulum and multivesicular bodies were involved in the formation of proteid yolk granules in the cytoplasm. A mature yolk granule was composed of three components: main body(central core), superficial layer, and the limiting membrane. The spawning season was between May and August and the main spawning occurred between June and July when the seawater temperature rose to approximately $18{\sim}23^{\circ}C$. The female reproductive cycle can be classified into five successive stages: early active stage(September to October), late active stage(November to February), ripe stage(February to June), partially spawned stage(May to August), and recovery stage(June to August). The rate of individuals reaching the first sexual maturity was 53.1% in females of 51.0 to 60.9mm in shell height, and 100% in those over 61.0mm.

An Observational Study on the Temperature Rising Effects in Water Warming canal and Water Warming Pond (온수로 및 온수지에서의 수온상승효과에 관한 조사연구)

  • The power water flowed out from the multipurpose darn influences the ecosystem approximately because of the low water temperature. An appropriate counter measure to the rising water temperature is needed for growing crops especially when the temperature is below 18˚C in the source of the irrigation water This observational study is practiced in Yong-Doo water warming canal and pond in the down stream of Choong-Ju multipurpose dam and is practiced for analyse and compare the rising effects in actural water temperature by actual measurement with the rising effects of planned water temperatuer by the basic theoritical method and for the help to present the direction in plan establishment through investigate the results afterwards. The results are as follows. 1.The degree of the rise of the water temperature can be decided by $\theta$x=$\theta$o +K L--v.h (T-$\theta$˚)Then, K values of a factor representing the characteristics of the water warming canal were 0.00002043 for the type I. and 0.0000173 for the type II. respectively. 2.A variation of water temperature which produced by the difference effective temperature and water temperature in the water warming canal was $\theta$x1 = 16.5 + 15.9(1-e -0.00018x), $\theta$x2 =18.8 + 8.4( 1-e -0.000298x)for the type I. and $\theta$x, = 19.6 + 12.8 ( 1-e -0.00041x) for the type II. 3.It was shown that the effects of the rise of water temperature for the type I. water warming canal were greater than that of type II. as a resultes of broadening the surface of the canal compared with the depth of water, coloring the surface of water canal and installing the resistance block. 4.In case of the type I. water warming canal, the equation between the air temperature and the degree of the rise of water temprature could be made ;Y= 0.4134X + 7.728 In addition, in case of the type II. water warming canal, the correlation was very low. 5.A monthly variation of the water temperature in the water warming canal was the highest in August during the irrigation period and the water temperature rose with the air temperature until August. However, it was blunted after then. 6.A rising degree of water temperature of the practical value in the water warming pond was higher than that of the theoritical equation by 69% for the type I. and 57% for the type II. Accordingly, it was possible to acquire the result near the practical value.$\theta$w-$\theta$o=[1-exp{ -h(1+2$\psi$) . X($\theta$w-$\theta$0)XC Here, C values are 1.69 for the type I. and 1.57 for the type II. 7.It was shown that the effect of the rise of water temperature was favorable when the thermal absorption was to be good by coloring the surface of the water warming pond and removing the bottom osmosis. 8.By enlarging the surface of water in comparison with the depth, and by having dead area of water in the water warming pond, this structure in the water warming pond is helpful for the rise of water temperature.

Physiological responses on Low Water-temperature Stress of Pacific abalone, Haliotis discus hannai (저수온 스트레스에 의한 북방전복, Haliotis discus hannai의 생리학적 반응)

  • This study was performed to obtain the basic data on physiological responses of low water temperature stress of the cultured Pacific abalone, Haliotis discus hannai. Abalones were exposed at low water temperatures of $7^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$. We have investigated survival rate, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and total protein (TP) in the abalone by the exposure times (0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 72, 120, 168 and 216 hours). Survival rate of the abalone at $7^{\circ}C$ experiment was 90.8%, whereas at $4^{\circ}C$ experiment was 0% after exposure 10 days. SOD activity was significantly increased until 12 hours after exposure to $4^{\circ}C$, and then was recovered to starting level after 24 hours. However, there was no significant difference between control ($12^{\circ}C$) and $7^{\circ}C$ experiments. TP was significantly increased until 216 hours after 24 hours at $4^{\circ}C$ experiment, but $7^{\circ}C$ experiment showed no significant differences compared to control ($12^{\circ}C$) experiment. Therefore, H. discus hannai was acclimated in low water temperature stress at $7^{\circ}C$, but at $4^{\circ}C$, all abalone died possibly because they exceed the limits of defense ability to too low temperature.

Species Composition and Seasonal Variation of Fish Assemblages in Sargassum Beds in Gamak Bay, Korea (가막만 모자반 군락지 어류군집의 종조성 및 계절변동)

  • Species composition and seasonal variation of fish assemblages in Sargassum beds in Gamak Bay was determined using fish samples collected monthly by a surrounding net from October 2008 to September 2009. A total of 21 species, 582 individuals and 5,345.1 g of fishes were collected during the study period and Perciformes accounted for 47.6 % of the total number of species. Takifugu niphobles, Engraulis japonicus and Lateolabrax japonicus predominated in number, accounting for 55 % of the total number of individuals. Higher number of species and individuals occurred in June and in September-October. Species were grouped into three by cluster analysis: A) dominant species such as Leiognathus nuchalis and Takifugu niphobles, B) fish collected mainly in spring such as Sebastes inermis, Chaenogobius heptacanthus, Pterogobius zonoleucus, Pholis nebulosa, and Trachyrhamphus serratus, and C) fish collected mainly in autumn such as Engraulis japonicus, Lateolabrax japonicus, and Hyporhamphus sajori.

Effects of Thermal Effluent from Nuclear Power Plant on Growth of Sea Squirt, Haiocynthia roretzi (원자력발전소 온배수에 따른 우렁쉥이의 성장)

  • To understand the effect of heated effluent from a nuclear power plant on marine organism, experimental culture of Halocynthia roretzi was carried out at heated effluent of Wolsung nuclear power plant from January to December 1996. Temperature was $11.2\~27.9^{\circ}C$ and salinity was $32.54\~34.59\%_{\circ}$ during the culture period, The Growth of H. roretzi on lower area of Bonggil-ri (St. 1) was not normal in height, breadth and weight due to heated effluent. Daily growth rate (DGR) of H. roretzi about Kampo area (St, 4) was significant other station, and St. 1 was significant from other station except St. 4, Mytilus edulis was major fouling organism (over $90\%$) that were M. edulis, Dideninum moseleyi, Styela clava in experiment culture farm. St. 1 was higher (mean 143 individual) and St. 4 was lower (mean 56 individual) appearance attached of M. edulis. Growth of H. roretzi reduced when attached number of M. eduiis was increased, because correlation between DGR and number of M. edulis was negative.

Characteristics of Particle Separation in Water Using Lab-Scale Acoustic Standing Wave (실험실 규모의 음향정재파를 이용한 수중의 입자분리 특성)

  • Characteristics of particle separation in water using labscale acoustic standing wave were studied. Acoustic standing wave is similar to either sound wave or ultrasonic, which makes a constant wave while returning to the origin by reflector. During that time, particulates dispersed in water are collected on the node of wave, where a sound pressure is zero. Acoustic standing wave transducer as of 28.0 kHz and 1.0 MHz were utilized and $6.8{\mu}m$ kaolin and $100.5{\mu}m$ redmud in average diameter were used as experimental materials in water. Once acoustic standing wave are generated in water, water temperature rises by $0.15{\sim}0.20^{\circ}C/min$ due to a sound pressure. Initial concentration of kaolin and redmud were controlled to have same as of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 g/L, respectively. Removal efficiency of the turbidity in a reacting chamber after 5 minutes, when acoustic sound wave was formed in most distinct, was measured to have 18.2~56.2% for kaolin and 23.0~53.6% for redmud at 1.0 MHz. Particle separation was not observed at 28.0 kHz.

A Study on the Environmental Factors Affecting the Population of the Wintering Waterbirds in Wonju-Stream (원주천의 월동수조류 군집에 영향을 미치는 환경요인 연구)

  • In order to understand the environmental factors affecting the waterbird community in winter, we divided the watershed into 6 sections and investigated the size of the stream, the water quality, benthic invertebrates, and fish including birds. The influences on the community of water birds in Wonju stream were river structure, temperature and water quality. Among the structure of the river, the factors affecting the waterbird community in winter were the width of the stream and the width of the flowing water. The wider the width, the more species and the number of the winter waterbirds were. As the width of river water was wide, the smaller the width and width of the waterway, the fewer the population. The temperature changes of the wintering season affected the community of water birds because it led to freezing of rivers. The sections that were not frozen showed a significant increase and decrease in the temperature drop and rise. The values of pH, water temperature, COD, BOD, TN, TP and total E. coli increased with the increase of the downstream waterbirds population in the water quality survey. The water quality of S6 was affected by the downstream sewage treatment plant The number of wintering waterbirds was also highest. The effluent from the sewage treatment plant seems to have a considerable influence on the water quality. The increase of several items such as TN promotes the nutrition of the river, which leads to the accumulation of organic matter and the proliferation of aquatic organisms. This may be the cause of the increase in winter waterbirds as a food source. The benthic macroinvertebrate communities and fish communities did not show any correlation with the wintering water-birds communities.

Actual Uses and Water Qualities of Irrigation Water from Agricultural Reservoir and Pumping Station (관개용 저수지 및 양수장의 농업용수 공급량 및 수질)

  • Joongpyong reservoir and Guiseok pumping station were selected as the hydrologic monitoring sites for the water level gauging and amount of irrigation water use, and water samples were taken and analysed periodically. Rating curves were derived from the relations water level and discharge data, and water supply through culvert of the Joongpyong reservoir was $593,200m^3$ and irrigation water $2,913,000m^3$ from the Guiseok pumping station. Changes of stream water qualities such as water temperature, pH, EC, total nitrogen, total phosphorus were examined, pH was 6.98.1 lower than the criteria of agricultural water 6.0~8.5, total nitrogen $0.9{\sim}4.5mg\;L^{-1}$, total phosphorus $0.008{\sim}0.036mg\;L^{-1}$. The results from this study could be offered as a basic data for the irrigation plan and water quality management.
