  • In order to clarify the process of spermiogenesis of the large-footed bat, Myotis macrodactylus, the testis and the epididymis obtained from mature male bats were examined by electron microscope. Based on the variety and diagnostic characters of organells, the spermiogenesis of the large-footed bat. Myotis macrodactylus could be divided into a total of nine phases. The results obtained from the present study are as follows. 1. The spermiogenesis of large-footed bat, Myotis macrodactylus was divided according to the level of fine structural differentiation into five phases, Golgi, cap, acrosome, maturation and spermiation phases, respectively; Golgi, cap, acrosome and spermiation phases were further subdivided into steps of early and late phase respectively and maturation phase has only one step. Hence, the spermiogenesis of the large-footed bat has been divided into a total of nine phases. 2. In the change of chromatin with nucleus, the chromatin granules are condensed in the whole part of nucleus at the late Golgi phase and completed at the maturation phase. 3. The sperm tail in the epididymis consists of nine outer doublets and two central singlet microtubles. Nos. 1, 5, 6, 9 of the outer dense fibers were larger than the others (2, 3, 4, 7, 8).

  • This paper deals with the histology of the barbels of striped sea catfish, Plotosus lineatus (Thunberg). This fish have eight noticeable barbels of two pairs on their maxillary and mandibular. Each barbel is composed of an epidermis, dermis and a central rod of cartilage. The epidermis in the middle part of the maxillary barbel is thicker than those on other parts, and formed of stratified epithelium which contains many cutaneous taste buds and a few small club cells. Number of taste buds increase on the middle and posterior part of each barbel. The dermis consists of loose connective tissue fibers which encloses blood vessels and bundles of nerve fibers. The barbels of this fish can be categorized into stiff and flexible types and are accessory, feeding and sensory structures. Thus we substantiate that they are gustatory receptor organs for this fish.

  • Korean entomopathogenic fungi were serveryed from soil samples throughout the five provinces and within three city limits using larvae of great wax moth, Galleria mellonella as baits. The fungi were also isolated from the eight species of dead insects. Of the total 200 soil samples, 40(20.0%) were positive for entomopathogenic fungi with 21(10.5%) containing Beauveria and 19(9.5%) containing Metarhizium. Positive sample sites in each habitat included 25 of the 110(22.7%) from forests, 2 of the 20(11.0%) from agricultural fields, 6 of the 11(54.5%) from agricultural fallow areas, and 7 of the 19(36.8%) from riparian areas. In addition, Metarhizium was isolated from Japanese walking stick (Phraortes elongatus) and Beauveria from the other 7 species of dead insects.

  • To elucidate the involvement of interleukin-$1{\beta}$ converting enzyme (ICE) in the course of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), we induced EAE by immunizing rats with an emulsion of rat spinal cord homogenate with complete Freund's adjuvant supplemented with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (H37Ra, 5mg/ml) and then examined the expression of ICE in the spinal cord of rats with EAE. In normal rat spinal cords, ICE is constitutively, but weakly, expressed in ependymal cells, neurons, and some neuroglial cells. In EAE, many inflammatory cells are positive for ICE, and the majority of ICE+ cells were identified as ED1+ macrophages. During this stage of EAE, the number of ICE+ cells in brain cells, including neurons and astrocytes, increased and these cells also had increased ICE immunoreactivity. These findings suggest that the upregulation of ICE in both brain cells and invading hematogenous cells is stimulated by a secretory product from inflammatory cells, and that this enzyme is involved in the pathogenesis of EAE via the production of IL-1 beta.

  • Atopic myelitis (AM) is a relatively mild form of myelitis associated with allergic diathesis, and present with predominant sensory manifestations. Lhermitte's sign has been considered as a relatively non-specific clinical sign suggesting demyelinating lesion in cervical cord. Here we report a patient with recurrent AM who presented with isolated Lhermitte's sign, both in first and second attacks. This report suggests that either the diagnosis or recurrence of AM can be frequently underdiagnosed because of its predominant sensory manifestations.

  • This survey was carried out in order to find out population density of aphid at the alpine area. Thetraps were set from May 1 to October 31 in 1973. The summarized results are as follows; 1. About 37 species of aphids were trapped, including 4 species of potatao virus vectors. 2. Of these, dominant species are Aphis gossypii Koch, Aphis lerodendri Matsumura, and Lipahis erysimi Kaltenbaeh. The $67\%$ of 3, dominant species consisted of the trapped total aphids. 3. The potato virus vectors are Myzus persicae Sulzer, Aulacorhum solani Kaltenbach, Lipaphis erysimi Kaltenbaeh and Aphis gossypii Glover. 4. Tile number of aphids and vectors at the alpine area is considerably lower than that at the level land. 5. The peak of the flying aphid occurrence is shown in the latter part of September.

  • An insecticide was obtained by condensation of chloral hydrate with p-chloroanisole. The structure of the insecticide was found to be 2,2-bis(2-methoxy-5-chlorophenyl)1,1,1-trichloroethane(M.C.T.). The best conditions for this condensation reaction were as follows: 1) The sulfuric acid concentration: 93% 2) The mole ratio of sulfuric acid to p-chloroanisole: 8 3) The mole ratio of chloral hydrate to p-chloroanisole: 0.7 4) The reaction time and reaction temperature: 12 hrs and 25-30$^{\circ}C$ The insecticidal effects of M.C.T against the Citrus Red Mite and Chrysanthemum Aphid were five times as strong as D.D.T.

  • The E-polarized scattering problems by a perfect conductor strip grating are analyzed by the method of moments. For an E-polarization the induced surface current density is expected to blow up at the strip both edges. Then the induced surface current density on the strip is expanded in a series of multiplication of Ultraspherical ploynomials with zeroth order and functions with appropriate edge boundary condition. The numerical results for current density and reflection cofficient are compared with other functions, it is shown that numerical results better improves the convergence of the moment method soulutions with general incident angles than the existing several other functions. The sharp variation points in the magnitude of geometric-optical reflection coefficient can be moved by varying the incident angle, strip width, and strip spacing.

  • Catfish Silurus asotus sampled from a pond farm in Korea, was affected with an epithelial tumor resembling catfish Ameiurus nrbulosus lip and mouth epithelioma. The neoplasm appeared in the form of solitary, multiple, large and fleshy masses upon the skin, fin or barbel. The epithelial tumor proliferation causes papillary folds supported by connective tissue cords. These folds extended above the normal skin surface and into the underlying dermis. In some area, proliferation of mucous cells or club cells were observed. The epithelial cells of the tumor were dispersed with no orderly arrangement. This is the first report on epithelioma of catfish in Korea.

  • Several studies have reported a possible link between anti-aquaporin-4 antibody and vitamin B12 deficiency in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). Bilaterally symmetric hyperintense signals on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the posterior columns, called the inverted V sign, are a characteristic feature of subacute combined degeneration associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. We report a patient with anti-aquaporin-4 antibody-positive NMOSD and an inverted V sign on MRI of the spinal cord and address the association between anti-aquaporin-4 antibody and functional vitamin B12 deficiency.
