A Case Study on the Use of Mentoring as a Method of Improving Novice Teachers' Teaching Professionalism in Secondary Science-Gifted Education (중등 과학영재교육에서 초임 교사의 수업 전문성 제고 전략으로써의 멘토링 적용 사례연구)

  • As a case study on the use of mentoring as a method of improving novice teachers' teaching professionalism in secondary science-gifted education, this study investigated the characteristics of mentoring science instructions for science-gifted students at the plan, performance, evaluation, and post-mentoring stages of the classes. One mentor and two mentees were selected, and mentoring in each mentee's instructions was conducted during nine classes over three times. We observed the total classes, and analyzed taped videos, the materials, the transcripts for mentoring and in-depth interviews, and field notes. The analyses of the results indicated that the characteristics of mentoring instructions, at the planning stage of the classes, exhibited the construction of more systematic classes, the escape from the schema that science instructions for science-gifted students were instructions using somewhat difficult experiments and the uses of diverse teaching strategies, the influence of the psychological burdens on developing science-gifted education programs, and the increase of the time preparing the classes. At the performance stage of the classes, the characteristics included the improvement in the quality of the classes, the influence of the psychological burdens on teaching the classes, and the inducements of some confusion on performing them. At the evaluation stage of the classes, the characteristics included the provision of the opportunities in deeply reflecting my own classes, and the provision of the practical power for improving the classes. Finally, the characteristics at the postmentoring stage could be attributed to the increase of mentees' self-confidence about their instructions and some development of mentors' teaching professionalism/mentoring skills.

  • Wiki 웹토론 시스템의 목적은 지식을 공유하고 자기 주도적으로 학습을 가능하게 하는 토론을 활성화시키는 데 있다. 그러나 이러한 장점에도 불구하고 가정의 컴퓨터 보급률이라든지 인터넷 사용 등의 제반환경여건에 따라 원활한 수업이 이루어지지 않았다. 따라서 면대면 현장학습뿐만 아니라 온라인 환경과 기술요소에 따른 다양한 학습활동들이 필요하다. 블렌디드 러닝 (Blended Learning)이란 적합한 시간에 적합한 사람에게 적합한 기술을 개인에 적합한 학습스타일에 맞추기 위해 적합한 학습관련의 기술을 적용함으로써 학습목표 성취에 초점을 두는 학습형태이다. 블렌디드 러닝에 있어서 학습은 지속적인 과정이며 오프라인학습공간과 결합하여 학습의 장을 넓히는 것이다. 학습자의 관심을 끌어내어 교육의 효과성을 극대화하며 학습 프로그램의 개발이나 과정실행에서 적절한 방법으로 혼합함으로써 시간과 비용을 최적화할 수 있다. 본 연구에서 제시한 블렌디드 러닝 교수학습모형은 Wiki 웹토론 시스템을 보다 효율적으로 활용할수 있게 하였다. 본 모형의 특징은 첫째, 토론에 앞서 오프라인 학습으로 학습목표확인과 수업안내를 하여 학생들로 하여금 학습목표인지와 수업의 흐름을 보다 잘 파악할 수 있게 하였다. 둘째, 토론 후 교사의 강의가 오프라인 학습으로 이루어지도록 하여 학생들에게 배운 내용을 정리할 수 있는 기회를 제공하여 보다 충실한 수업이 될 수 있었다. 셋째, 토론 후 학습자-교사자 및 학습자 상호피드백이 이루어질 수 있도록 하였다.

Reporting the Activities of Learning Community on Elementary Mathematics Lesson (초등학교 수학 수업 학습공동체 활동에 대한 연구)

  • In this research, I reported the activities of learning community on elementary mathematics which is consist of 1 university researcher 4 elementary teachers. The main activities of learning community are as follows: establishing objectives and contents of learning community, writing the critical essay on elementary mathematics lesson, and reflecting on the activities of learning community. The establishment of objectives and contents of learning community was built through agreement between university researcher and elementary teachers. In addition to, the members of learning community could share the idea and difficulties on elementary mathematics lesson and increase the professional development on elementary mathematics lesson by criticizing the lesson together.

Two Middle School Science Teachers' Experiences of Teaching Science in the Republic of Korea: A Phenomenological Analysis (두명의 한국 중학교 과학 교사들의 과학 수업 경험에 대한 현상학적 분석)

  • This study investigated how the unique educational contexts in the Republic of Korea (RK) impacted two science teachers' teaching practices in a public middle school and what the science teaching experience means to them. In particular, we explored how the middle school science teachers decide pedagogical approaches to use in their teaching based on classroom climate, students' attitude toward learning science, school curriculum and classroom culture. Using a phenomenological research approach, we analyzed classroom observation data and interview data to interpret the teachers' science teaching experience. Results of the study showed that the teachers' practice was dominantly affected by two external factors. First, the teachers' teaching practice was affected by the amount of science content knowledge they need to cover within a given class time. Second, the teachers' teaching practice was affected by students' attitudes toward science learning and their science preparedness in private tutoring centers. Implications of the study results are discussed in the paper.

Design and Application of an Instructional Model for Flipped learning of Programming Class (프로그래밍 수업의 플립드러닝 학습모형 설계 및 적용)

  • The purpose of this study is to design and implement an instructional model for flipped learning of programming class. Because a programming process requires a high level of abstract thinking with a good understanding of a programming language, many students have difficulty in programming. For this characteristic of programming, it is not easy to effectively achieve learning goals of programming lesson by lecturing grammatical elements of a programming language and the following examples in a limited class time. In order to overcome these problems and to make effective programming lessons, we designed an instructional model based on flipped learning. Especially, in this study, we analyzed learners' difficulties in programming learning and errors that occurred in actual programming process for designing the instructional model. As a result of applying this model to the class, it was found that the students were generally satisfied with the lesson by having positive communication with other students in the classroom and actively participating in the learning.

Flipped Learning in Socioscientific Issues Instruction: Its Impact on Middle School Students' Key Competencies and Character Development as Citizens (플립러닝 기반 SSI 수업이 중학생의 과학기술 사회 시민으로서의 역량 및 인성 함양에 미치는 효과)

  • This study aims to investigate how flipped learning-based socioscientific issue instruction (FL-SSI instruction) affected middle school students' key competencies and character development. Traditional classrooms are constrained in terms of time and resources for exploring the issues and making decision on SSI. To address these concerns, we designed and implemented an SSI instruction adopting flipped learning. Seventy-three 8th graders participated in an SSI program on four topics for over 12 class periods. Two questionnaires were used as a main data source to measure students' key competencies and character development before and after the SSI instruction. In addition, student responses and shared experience from focus group interviews after the instruction were collected and analyzed. The results indicate that the students significantly improved their key competencies and experienced character development after the SSI instruction. The students presented statistically significant improvement in the key competencies (i.e., collaboration, information and technology, critical thinking and problem-solving, and communication skills) and in two out of three factors in character and values as global citizens (social and moral compassion, and socio-scientific accountability). Interview data supports the quantitative results indicating that SSI instruction with a flipped learning strategy provided students in-depth and rich learning opportunities. The students responded that watching web-based videos prior to class enabled them to deeply understand the issue and actively engage in discussion and debate once class began. Furthermore, the resulting gains in available class time deriving from a flipped learning approach allowed the students to examine the issue from diverse perspectives.

An Analysis of ICT Implementation and Environmental Conditions after a Teacher Training for Project-Based Learning with ICT (ICT를 활용한 프로젝트기반학습 연수 참여 교사들의 활용 실태 및 촉진 환경 조건 분석)

  • The purpose of the present study was to identify how and how much teachers utilize ICT in their instruction and to analyze teachers' perception about the environmental factors to promote ICT implementation after their participation in a teacher training for Project-Based Learning (PBL) with ICT. The results showed that there was a significant change in the application of PBL into classroom and the class preparation before and after the training. Lack of time to prepare the instruction using ICT was identified as the most important reason not to utilize ICT in their classroom. While teachers perceived time and rewards among the environmental factors were lack, dissatisfaction with status quo, incentives, knowledge and skill, participation and leadership were perceived as being present in their school.

Observation on the Constructing Practical Knowledge of Student Teachers: A Case of Geography Classroom Organization (교육실습생의 실천적 지식 구성에 대한 관찰 - 지리 수업조직을 사례로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand two geography student teachers' experience of practical knowledge on the geography classroom organization during their student teaching. I carried out a qualitative case study on the geography classroom organization and its practice. Data was gathered through participant observation and in-deep interview. The results are as follows: 1) I present portraits two pre-service geography teachers' lives, which represent typical case of intrinsic deep motivation and spontaneous interest in subject matter. 2) Their classroom are organized $9{\sim}14$ segment, its segment organizations in introduction close steps and main lesson step behave differently. The segment activities in close step behave most irregularly. 3) In the reflection rubric, the level of their reflection is middle, mostly concentrated on 'technical' or 'dialogue' level. On the basis of these findings, it can be concluded that a different way of understanding the relationship between knowing to teach and knowing about teaching is necessary.

The Effect of Integrated Instruction for Improving English Ability (Listening & Reading Skills) of Elementary School Students: Using Science Animation (초등학생의 융합수업이 영어 능력(듣기, 읽기) 향상에 미치는 영향: 과학 애니메이션의 활용)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of English integrated instruction on the 6th grade Korean elementary students' English ability using science animation. Twenty-seven students took English integrated instruction before their regular class for 10 minutes while the other students took review activity instead of it. At first, the students were asked to take the sixth grade diagnostic evaluation sponsored by C office of education in 2018 as the pre-test and ten months later, they were asked to take the first grade diagnostic evaluation of middle school sponsored by C office of education in 2017 as the post-test. Results of the study showed that the English ability and the affective attitude of the students taking English integrated instruction were improved. These results suggest that English integrated instruction can contribute to the improvement of Korean elementary students' English ability.

Implementation and Application of Fairy-Tale Book of an Augmented Reality Based on Smartphone and Web browser (웹과 스마트폰 기반의 증강현실 동화책 구현 및 적용)

  • The 2009 revised curriculum has been revised to increase the time allocated to creative discretion. Accordingly, in many schools, discretionary activities have been replaced by reading and essay writing. However, these activities do not differ from existing classes and student's interest in those activities is minimal. This study has applied two kind of the AR program, which is designed and implemented using Smartphone in the classroom, to increase student's interest. A browser-based AR, created by Junaio and QCAR-authored Smartphone-based AR fairy tale book, are easy to use in class by the students themselves. We applies to Fourth grade student in reading education this AR programs. As a result of test, the students in actual reading classes responded that their interest in the lesson and their understanding of fairy tales has increased.
