Characteristics of Transformation Process of Wastewater in Sewer (하수관거내 오염물질 성상변화 특성)

  • In this study, variations of water quality, sediment size and contaminant substances are analyzed at upstream and downstream in sewer systems in order to evaluate the characteristics of wastewater transformation by physico-chemical and biological reactions. The differences of DOC concentration between up and down stream showed the range of $-5.8{\sim}18.6$ from the result of continuous measurement at up and down stream. About 8.4% of DOC concentration was reduced and reduction rate was 2.3 mg/L/km. SS reduction rate was measured by 5.5 mg/L/km, 0.22 mg/L/min from upstream to downstream, which was twice than DOC reduction rate. When pollution load reduction was evaluated considering infiltration/inflow effect, DOC load was eliminated from 1,230 ka/d to 1,167 kg/d by physi-chemical and biological reaction in a sewer and 7.8% of the SS in upstream station was reduced under dry weather condition. The results showed that the characteristics of transformation process of wastewater in sewer should be considered for design and operation of wastewater treatment plant.

Structures and Variability of the T-S field and the Current across the Korea Strait (대한해협 횡단면 상의 수온-염분과 해류의 구조 및 변동)

  • To understand the cross-sectional structures of temperature, salinity and current across the Korea Strait, field measurements were carried out for the period of May 2 to 20, 1994. Using the R/V Tam Yang, detailed CTD profiles and ADCP records were obtained and used to examine the mean and variability field on two time scales (15 days and 25 hours). A sharp coastal front in the middle of the Korea Strait exists across which two different water masses, i.e., warm and saline water in the eastern side and cold and less saline water in the western side are neighboring. We observed highly variable field of T and S apparently caused by the westward movement of warm and saline water mass. Short-term fluctuations of T and S in the middle layer are remarkable and their importance was analysed as the first Eigen mode accounting for more than 50% of total variances. The currents in th Korea Strait are strongly influenced by tidal currents with spring and neap variation whose maximum speed ranges 80-90 and 60-70 cm/s respectively near the central portion of the channel. Strong southward tidal current could even mask the Tsushima Current completely. Results of harmonic analysis show that the magnitudes of semidiurnal, diurnal and mean components of currents are comparable to each other at spring and neap tide conditions. The volume transport across the western channel of the Korea Strait were estimated to be 2.1 Sv at neap tide condition and 3.4 Sv at spring tide condition.

The Effects of Dietary $MgSO_4$ Supplement on Serum Stress Hormones Concentrations and Pork Quality in Late Finishing Pigs (출하 전 마그네슘 단기급여가 돼지의 혈중 스트레스 관련 호르몬 함량 및 육질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of MgSO₄ supplement on meat quality and serum stress hormones concentrations in late finishing pigs. Sixty castrated Landrace pigs (average weight±S.D., 106.5±8.9 kg) were assigned to a control diet (without MgSO₄ supplement) and diet with MgSO₄(10 g/kg diet) supplemented. Pigs had free access to diets and water during five-day feeding period. At the end of feeding experiment, pigs were fasted for 16 hours and transported to commercial slaughter plant (30-minute transportation distance). After 2-hour lairage time, pigs were slaughtered, and blood samples were collected at bleeding procedure of slaughter. Pigs fed the diet with MgSO₄ supplement had higher (p<0.05) serum magnesium concentrations than those in pigs fed a control diet. Serum adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol concentrations determined at slaughter were not significantly different between dietary groups. Carcass temperature, pH at 24h post- slaughter, drip loss and color characteristics were not influenced (p>0.05) by short-term supplement of MgSO₄. Pigs fed the diet supplemented with MgSO₄ diet had lower PSE incidence (23.3%) compared to pigs fed the control diet (33%). These results indicate that short-term supplement of dietary MgSO₄ in late finishing pigs may not be beneficial in improving pork quality, and further study needs to assess feeding regime of magnesium supplement.

Impacts of Delivery Vehicle Routing on Different Inventory Strategies and Network Configurations (재고전략 및 네트워크 구성에 따른 배송차량의 운영특성 연구)

  • Recently, interest in supply chain management is rising along with the increasing oil prices and traffic congestion. In particular, people started studying the issue, but realized that advantageous strategies for suppliers and retailers are not always advantageous to a carrier. Therefore, in this study the atuhors set up a simulation scenario to understand delivery vehicle routing problems under various inventory policies, namely Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) and Periodic Order Quantity (POQ) and network configurations. First, the authors made a virtual supply chain. Then they analyzed characteristics of delivery vehicle routing under various inventory policies (EOQ and POQ) and network configurations. As a result, the POQ inventory policy decreases the number of vehicles, the number of drivers, and the service time of vehicles. Also, the centralized network increases the load factor of vehicles and decreases the service time of vehicles. In other words, the centralized network and the POQ inventory policy are better for the carrier. These results show a savings of 15,556,806 won ($13,389.10) in a month: a reduction of 17%.

  • 전북 완주군 농가에서 2017년 12월에 재배한 '시베리아'와 '메두사' 품종을 1시간 이내에 국립원예특작과학원 실험실로 이동하였다. 알약(SmartFreshTM, AgroFresh Inc., USA)형태의 1-MCP를 1.875g/3.55m3 기준으로 정량하여 Activator Kit(SmartFreshTM, AgroFresh Inc., USA)에 넣어 마개를 닫고 몇 번 흔들어주어 녹인 후 1.5 ppm이 되도록 처리하였으며 3시간 훈증 후 30분 환기하였다. 훈증처리 후 절화 백합은 유공 필름 슬리브를 이용하여 포장한 후 골판지상자에 넣어 모의 수출환경에서 수송방식은 건식(건조처리)상태로 $4^{\circ}C$ 저장고에 암상태로 저장하면서 무처리를 대조로 에틸렌 노출 조건 조성을 위하여 후레쉬라이프(탑프레쉬) 5g 봉지를 상자내부 5개, 상자외부 저장고 내에 10개로 총 15개의 에틸렌 발생제 처리를 하였다. 백합 절화 신선도 유지기간 연장을 위한 선도유지제 전처리 효과는 1.5 ppm 1-MCP 3시간 훈증처리에 의해 잎의 황화현상을 지연시키는 효과가 있었다. 전체적으로 판정한 절화수명은 '시베리아'는 무처리 9.0일, 1-MCP 훈증 9.0일, 에틸렌 발생제 8.3일, 1-MCP 훈증+에틸렌 발생제 9.5일이었으며 '메두사'는 무처리 6.5일, 1-MCP 훈증 7.5일, 에틸렌 발생제 5.7일, 1-MCP 훈증+에틸렌 발생제 8.5일로 나타났다. 에틸렌에 노출은 꽃의 빠른 노화를 야기하여 절화수명을 단축 시켰으며 이상개화를 보이는 꽃도 있어 상품성이 크게 떨어졌다. 1-MCP에 의해 잎의 황화 억제에 효과적이었으며 저장 중 에틸렌 발생제를 동시에 처리하였을 때 품질유지 효과가 더 크게 나타났으며 '메두사' 품종에서는 만개시 화색도 더 진하게 나타났다. 따라서, 저온저장이나 선적시 에틸렌 발생이 많은 품목과 혼합하게 될 것이 예상될 경우에 품질유지를 위해 1-MCP 훈증처리를 하면 효과적일 것으로 사료된다.

Gene Expression Profiling by Ginsenoside Rb1 in Keratinocyte HaCaT Cells (피부각질세포 HaCaT에서 진세노사이드 Rb1에 의한 유전자 발현 양상)

  • We investigated the gene expression patterns and the mechanisms of action of the apoptotic response by microarray analysis of human keratinocyte HaCaT cells treated with ginsenoside Rb1, a saponin of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer. Genes related to apoptosis, the G2/M transition of the mitotic cell cycle, cell division, mitotic nuclear division, and intracellular protein transport were 2-fold up-regulated in HaCaT cells treated with the ginsenoside Rb1, whereas genes related to DNA repair, regeneration fission, and extracellular matrix organization were 2-fold down-regulated. Apoptosis signaling may be mediated by FAS and PLA2G4A, and pathway analysis indicated that STAT3 might be an upstream regulator of these genes. The activity of FAS and PLA2G4A was verified by qPCR, which showed that FAS was increased about 2-fold in HaCaT cells treated with $10{\mu}g/ml$ of ginsenoside Rb1 for 24 hr, PLA2G4A was increased about twice after 6 hours, and gene expression was increased more than 2-fold after 24 hr. Knockdown of STAT3 with siRNA decreased FAS expression and increased PLA2G4A expression but only FAS was passed from the upstream regulator STAT3. These results indicate that STAT3, which is an upstream regulator, induces apoptosis via FAS during treatment with ginsenoside Rb1.

Examining Access Mode Choice Behavior of Local Metropolitan High-Speed Rail Station - A Case Study of Dong-Daegu Station - (고속철도 지방대도시 정차역의 연계교통수단 선택모형 구축에 관한 연구 - 동대구역을 사례로 -)

  • This study aimed to analyze access mode choice behavior for KTX Passengers. To fulfill the aims of this study, Dong-Daegu Station was selected as a station for a case study. This study takes place in two stages. These are (i) descriptive statistical analysis of transportation status before and after introduction of the KTX, (ii) empirical model estimation for analyzing access mode choice behavior. This study makes use of the data from travel survey from Daegu metropolitan area. The main part of the survey was carried out in the KTX Dong-Daegu station. The data was collected from a sample of 1,800 individuals. The survey data includes the information on travel from Dong-Daegu station to Seoul. From descriptive statistical analysis of transportation status before and after introduction of the KTX, it is found that revealed demand of the KTX is lower than that expected. Moreover, it is found that the low demand of the KTX stems from high cost for the KTX itself and inconvenience( including travel time and cost) of access mode. In order to analyze mode choice behavior for accessing Dong-Daegu station, multinomial logit model structure is used. For the model specification, a variety of behavioral assumptions about the factors which affect the access mode choice, were considered. From the empirical model estimation, it si found that access travel time and access travel cost are significant in choosing access mode. Given the empirical evidence, we see that improvement of access transportation system for Dong-Daegu station is very important for enhancing the use of KTX.

Proximal Policy Optimization Reinforcement Learning based Optimal Path Planning Study of Surion Agent against Enemy Air Defense Threats (근접 정책 최적화 기반의 적 대공 방어 위협하 수리온 에이전트의 최적 기동경로 도출 연구)

  • The Korean Helicopter Development Program has successfully introduced the Surion helicopter, a versatile multi-domain operational aircraft that replaces the aging UH-1 and 500MD helicopters. Specifically designed for maneuverability, the Surion plays a crucial role in low-altitude tactical maneuvers for personnel transportation and specific missions, emphasizing the helicopter's survivability. Despite the significance of its low-altitude tactical maneuver capability, there is a notable gap in research focusing on multi-mission tactical maneuvers that consider the risk factors associated with deploying the Surion in the presence of enemy air defenses. This study addresses this gap by exploring a method to enhance the Surion's low-altitude maneuvering paths, incorporating information about enemy air defenses. Leveraging the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm, a reinforcement learning-based approach, the research aims to optimize the helicopter's path planning. Visualized experiments were conducted using a Surion model implemented in the Unity environment and ML-Agents library. The proposed method resulted in a rapid and stable policy convergence for generating optimal maneuvering paths for the Surion. The experiments, based on two key criteria, "operation time" and "minimum damage," revealed distinct optimal paths. This divergence suggests the potential for effective tactical maneuvers in low-altitude situations, considering the risk factors associated with enemy air defenses. Importantly, the Surion's capability for remote control in all directions enhances its adaptability in complex operational environments.

Cellulosic Ethanol Production (셀룰로식 (Cellulosic) 에탄올 생산)

  • The world demand of ethanol as an alternative fuel for gasoline is increasing rapidly because of high oil price and global climate change. Most of ethanol is currently produced from corn grain or sugars in sugarcane and sugar beet. Because these sources compete with foods and animal feed and are not expected to be enough for future demand of ethanol. Thus, cellulosic ethanol from agricultural residues or wood has to be commercialized in near future. Typical cellulosic ethanol production consists of pretreatment, enzyme hydrolysis, fermentation and product separation. This paper reviews the principles and status of each step and discusses issues for cellulosic ethanol production.

Studies on Changes in the Hydrography and Circulation of the Deep East Sea (Japan Sea) in a Changing Climate: Status and Prospectus (기후변화에 따른 동해 심층 해수의 물리적 특성 및 순환 변화 연구 : 현황과 전망)

  • The East Sea, one of the regions where the most rapid warming is occurring, is known to have important implications for the response of the ocean to future climate changes because it not only reacts sensitively to climate change but also has a much shorter turnover time (hundreds of years) than the ocean (thousands of years). However, the processes underlying changes in seawater characteristics at the sea's deep and abyssal layers, and meridional overturning circulation have recently been examined only after international cooperative observation programs for the entire sea allowed in-situ data in a necessary resolution and accuracy along with recent improvement in numerical modeling. In this review, previous studies on the physical characteristics of seawater at deeper parts of the East Sea, and meridional overturning circulation are summarized to identify any remaining issues. The seawater below a depth of several hundreds of meters in the East Sea has been identified as the Japan Sea Proper Water (East Sea Proper Water) due to its homogeneous physical properties of a water temperature below 1℃ and practical salinity values ranging from 34.0 to 34.1. However, vertically high-resolution salinity and dissolved oxygen observations since the 1990s enabled us to separate the water into at least three different water masses (central water, CW; deep water, DW; bottom water, BW). Recent studies have shown that the physical characteristics and boundaries between the three water masses are not constant over time, but have significantly varied over the last few decades in association with time-varying water formation processes, such as convection processes (deep slope convection and open-ocean deep convection) that are linked to the re-circulation of the Tsushima Warm Current, ocean-atmosphere heat and freshwater exchanges, and sea-ice formation in the northern part of the East Sea. The CW, DW, and BW were found to be transported horizontally from the Japan Basin to the Ulleung Basin, from the Ulleung Basin to the Yamato Basin, and from the Yamato Basin to the Japan Basin, respectively, rotating counterclockwise with a shallow depth on the right of its path (consistent with the bottom topographic control of fluid in a rotating Earth). This horizontal deep circulation is a part of the sea's meridional overturning circulation that has undergone changes in the path and intensity. Yet, the linkages between upper and deeper circulation and between the horizontal and meridional overturning circulation are not well understood. Through this review, the remaining issues to be addressed in the future were identified. These issues included a connection between the changing properties of CW, DW, and BW, and their horizontal and overturning circulations; the linkage of deep and abyssal circulations to the upper circulation, including upper water transport from and into the Western Pacific Ocean; and processes underlying the temporal variability in the path and intensity of CW, DW, and BW.
