  • In order to evaluate the degree of hydrogen embrittlement of TRIP steels charged with hydrogen according to varying the current density and the charging time under acid and alkaline electrolyte conditions were tested by small punch test. The results of SP test showed that the degree of hydrogen embrittlement at acid electrolyte condition was more effective factor compared to that of alkaline electrolyte condition. Therefore, all of the charging time and the charging current density were at the condition of acid electrolyte appeared as the main factor of the degree of hydrogen embrittlement in the condition of acid electrolyte. But, it was considered that the charging time compared to the charging current density at the condition of alkaline electrolyte was more effective factor to raise the degree of hydrogen embrittlement.

  • The kinetics of external hydrogen embrittlememt is considered. The equation of the crack growth rate (CGR) is derived from modification of the model developed by Wilkinson and Vitek. After calculation of hydrogen pressure build-up in the void, the effect of the internal hydrogen pressure on the void growth is added. The CGR is expressed by two terms. One is the term dependent on the critical stress, which is exactly same as Wilkinson and Vitek. The other is term dependent on the pressure of the hydrogen in void.

  • Pipeline steels for hydrogen transmission may cause hydrogen embrittlement due to absorption and diffusion of hydrogen through metals. Hydrogen pipes exhibited similar mechanical properties to atmospheric conditions in terms of tensile and yield strength in a hydrogen atmosphere. This paper aims to provide relevant information regarding hydrogen embrittlement in hydrogen transmission pipeline.

  • Small punch(SP) tests were performed on high strength Dual Phase(DP) steels in order to evaluate the behavior of hydrogen embrittlement. For this purpose, three different kinds of DP steel specimens were charged with hydrogen by electochemical hydrogen charging experiment. After charging with hydrogen, the amount of charged hydrogen was measured. The measurement results showed that amounts of charged hydrogen were largely dependent on the martensite volume fraction of DP steel. The hydrogen charging time of 25 hrs with current densities of 150 and $200mA/cm^2$ was investigated as saturation condition with hydrogen. The analysis results on the SP energy and height of SP bulbs after SP tests showed that those were decreased as the amount of charged hydrogen increased. Fractographs of SP bulbs were observed a brittle fracture mixed with quasi-cleavage fractures, layered structures and clear facets.

  • The hydrogen embrittlement degree of 5 type high strength DP steel charged with hydrogen by electrochemical method was evaluated by small punch test(SP test). After SP test, SP absorbed energy was remarkably decreased from 363 kgf-mm to 209 kgf-mm with increasing hydrogen charging time from 5hr to 50hr at DP5 specimen under the $200mA/cm^2$ current density condition. It was investigated that the decrease of hydrogen charging amount and SP absorbed energy according to the increase of current density and hydrogen charging time had a linear relationship. And it also investigated that the change of bulb height appeared by the SP test was decreased from 1.79mm to 1.59mm with the hydrogen charging conditions. It was supposed that it could be used as indicator of the evaluation of hydrogen embrittlement because of the similar trend of the formal results of SP absorbed energy. From the SEM observation of fracture area by crack in bulb, the morphology of fracture surface according to increasement of the hydrogen charging amount was varied with the cleavage mode.

  • In this study, characteristics of effect on hydrogen gas was investigated to hydrogen embrittlement by disk and tensile tests. The developed and commercial alloy was fabricated to a plate material made from an alloy ingot. The prepared materials were processed in the form of a disk to measure rupture pressure by hydrogen and helium gas at a rate of 0.1 to 1,000 bar/min. In the hydrogen pre-charged tensile test, a specimen was hydrogenated using an anode charging method, and the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, elongation, and reduction in area rate were carried by a strain rate test. Also, the microstructure was observed to the fracture surface of the tensile test specimen. As a result, the developed materials satisfied endurable hydrogen embrittlement, and the fractured surface showed a brittleness fracture surface with a depth of several ㎛, but dimple due to ductile fracture could be observed.

  • The objective of this study is an understanding of stress corrosion cracking of metals that is recognized to mostly limit the lifetime of the structural materials by comparing the features of delayed hydride cracking of zirconium alloys with those of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of Ni-based alloys and hydrogen cracking of stainless steels. To this end, we investigated a dependence of delayed hydride cracking (DHC) velocity on the applied stress intensity factor and yield strength, and correlated a temperature dependence of the striation spacing and the DHC velocity. We reviewed a similarity of the features between the DHC of zirconium alloys, the SCC of Ni-based alloys and turbine rotor steels, and the hydrogen cracking of stainless steels and discussed the SCC phenomenon in metals with our DHC mode.

  • [ $Zr_{50}-Ni_{27}-Nb_{18}-Co_5$ ] amorphous alloys ribbon was prepared by a single-roller melt-spinning technique. In order to improve the hydrogen kinetics Pd-coating were carried out on each side of the amorphous ribbon. Pd prevents oxidation of Zr and catalyses the dissociation of molecular hydrogen to atomic hydrogen. In this work, the hydrogen embrittlement and surface properties on Zr-based amorphous alloys were investigated. The Zr-based amorphous alloys were characterized by X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The morphology of surface and roughness was observed by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A lattice parameter of both Pd and Zr-based amorphous alloy was increased after hydrogen permeation at 473 K. After hydrogen permeation at 473 K, some cracks were observed on the surface of Pd, which was the cause for the hydrogen embrittlement. The crystallization temperature of Zr-based amorphous alloy was decreased due to the permeated hydrogen.
