To understand the relationship of growth and water use efficiency (WUE) between superior and inferior families from open-pollinated progenies of P. densiflora, two families (one superior and one inferior families) in two open-pollinated progeny test sites were selected using volume growth at 26 years. And we compared environmental factors and WUE which was calculated from measured ${\delta}^{13}C$ in the wood. The ${\delta}^{13}C$ change during the last 20 years showed steady decrease and same pattern as WUE in the fertile site, while there was an inverse relationship between ${\delta}^{13}C$ and WUE in poor site, indicating an interaction between gene and environment. The superior family showed higher WUE than inferior family in poor site, indicating efficient stomatal control of the former under water stress. Water use efficiency calculated by carbon isotope composition can be used as a selection criterion for drought tolerance families in open-pollinated progenies of P. densiflora.

Water use efficiency (WUE) is the amount of carbon uptake per unit of water use, which is a key measure of the functions of terrestrial ecosystems, as it is related to both the hydrologic and carbon cycles. Furthermore, it can vary with many factors, such as climate conditions and land cover characteristics, in different regions. In this study, we aim to understand the spatial and temporal variations in WUE on the Korean Peninsula as well as the associated response to drought. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived gross primary productivity (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) datasets and climate data were used to derive a drought index. Based on the monthly WUE, we found that WUE decreased during the monsoon summer in all regions and for all vegetation types. Furthermore, the annual WUE was negatively correlated with the drought index, with increasing correlation coefficients from the northern region to the southern region of the Korean Peninsula.

Large and small seeds (44 and 22 mg per caryopsis) of a spring wheat (cv. Kulin) and a spring barley (cv. Skiff) were sown at two nitrogen rates (equivalent to 10 and 32 g m$^{-2}$ ) in well-watered pots under outdoor conditions to determine the effects of seed size and nitrogen (N) nutrition on water use efficiency (WUE) and carbon isotope discrimination ($\Delta$) and to evaluate interaction among $\Delta$, WUE and N nutrition in wheat and barley. Barley produced, on average, 105% more biomass (root+shoot dry weight) than wheat at stem elongation because of early vigor. By anthesis this difference had disappeared as wheat had 16% more biomass than barley which headed 3 days earlier. Compared to plants grown from small seed, plants grown from large seed had much greater biomass in wheat than in barley at stem elongation and anthesis. Higher N nutrition increased average biomass of wheat and barley by 40 and 31%, respectively, at anthesis. Barley had 35 and 20% greater WUE (biomass gained/transpiration) than wheat at stem elongation and anthesis, respectively, and 2.0 to 3.6% lower $\Delta$ in aboveground shoots depending on growth stages and plant parts than wheat which had a greater stomatal conductance than barley. Seed size had a variable effect on WUE and did not affected $\Delta$ values. Water use efficiency was not affected by N rate at stem elongation in wheat and barley whereas WUE was increased 2 and 7%, respectively, in wheat and barley at anthesis with increasing N from 10 to 32 g m$^{-2}$ . High N plants had about 2.5% lower $\Delta$ values regardless of growth stages than low N plants across species and seed sizes. Carbon isotope discrimination was negatively correlated with WUE at anthesis but not at stem elongation.
Daily last time of irrigation in perlite bag culture was investigated to get high water use efficiency (WUE) and fertilizer use efficiency (FUE) and also sustain high productivity for tomato. The water content in the substrate was higher as the last time of irrigation was later from 4 to 1hour before sunset. The growth were not significantly different in all treatments. The marketable yield was the highest in treatments of 1 or 2hours before sunset and the lowest in treatment of 4hours. In the result to investigate for 128days WUE and FUE were the lowest in treatment of 1hour before sunset but the highest in treatment of 3hours before sunset. In the conclusion, it looks best to end irrigation 2~3hours before sunset in the aspects of plant growth, yield, WUE, and FUE.
This study is to compare irrigation efficiency between sap flow sensor automated system (SF) and conventional irrigation system based on integrated solar radiation automated system (ISR) in tomato rockwool hydroponics. Total irrigated volumes was higher in the ISR system by 5.0L per plant, a lower drainage rate was found in the SF system, compared to the ISR system. There was no difference in shoot and fruit fresh weights, water use efficiency (WUE) and water amount consumed for producing 200g of tomato fruit. The daily average sap flow density (SFD) was closer to the change of solar irradiance (SI) in the plant grown under the SF system, compared to the ISR system. The correlation coefficient (r2) between the fruit diameter and the volumetric water content during the 56 and 82 days after transplant showed the SF treatment was higher than the ISR at night and daytime, and the correlation was higher at night time. The sap flow density and humidity deficit (HD) of SF treatment was related as closely as the solar irradiance. Further studies should demonstrate that SF irrigation system is a convenient method for hydroponic farmers with advantages, such as growth, higher yield, WUE, and accuracy.

This study was conducted to investigate growth performance, photosynthesis, water use efficiency (WUE), and stomatal conductance ($g_s$) of container seedlings of Liriodendron tulipifera and Zelkova serrata growing under three different irrigation periods (1 time/1 day, 1 time/2 days and 1 time/3 days) for high seedling quality. The root collar diameter and height of L. tulipifera and Z. serrata seedlings were highest with 1 time/1 day irrigation, whereas they were lowest with 1 time/3 days irrigation. The two species showed low drought tolerance. As irrigation period was shortened, biomass and seedling quality index (SQI) of the two species increased. The ratio of height to root collar diameter (H/D) and the ratio of below to aboveground biomass (T/R) of the two species were lower with 1 time/3 days than at other irrigation periods. L. tulipifera and Z. serrata seedlings showed significantly higher photosynthetic capacity with 1 time/1 day irrigation. As irrigation period was shortened, $g_s$ of two species increased, while their WUE decreased significantly (P<0.05) These results show that 1 time/1 day irrigation provides the most optimal water condition for container seedling production of two species and irrigation controlling is very important for growth and quality of container seedlings.
To examine the relationship between air pollution and occurrence of disease in plants, we investigated the alteration of physiology and biochemistry of Ginkgo biloba by inoculating with Coniothyrium sp. and fumigating with 0.1 ${\mu}l/l\;SO_{2-}$ Visual damage did not appear but photosynthesis, $CO_2$ use efficiency(CUE) and water use efficiency(WUE) were reduced when G. biloba was exposed to $SO_{2-}$for 7days (8 hours a day). When inoculated with Coniothyrium sp., the seventies of damage in G. biloba showed a threefold difference between $SO_{2-}$ treatment (SI) and $SO_{2-}$ free treatment (SFI) at day 42 from initial inoculation. Little difference was observed in sugar contents that may be used pathogens feed, among control, SFI and SI. In spite of the reduction in photosynthetic rate, sugar contents and CUE were maintained. WUE was enhanced 13% more at SI than SFI. The $CO_2$fixation boosted because of enhanced WUE, and thus sugar synthesis was not affected. In addition, sugar transport seems to be retarded for some internal alteration. Consequently, the severity of SI was more serious than that of SFI because Coniothyrium sp. easily invades into the physical texture of G. biloba weakened by $SO_2$ fumigation and because sugar was accumulated in leaves of G. biloba.

In this study, the resistance to ozone and characteristics of ozone-induced damage were investigated on the perennial ground cover plant species. Sedum kamtschaticum and Hosta longipes were exposed to $200{\mu}g{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ ozone for 8 hours per day (from 08:00 to 16:00) in the naturally irradiated phytotron. The extent of ozone-induced damage was measured through the analysis of physiological parameters, such as water use efficiency (WUE), chlorophyll content (Chl. a, Chl. b, Chl. a + b, and Chl. a/b ratio), carotenoid contents, and the induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Ozone exposure significantly reduced the daytime WUE in both species. The contents of chlorophyll and carotenoid were also decreased and ROS, such as hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and superoxide radical ($O_2{^-}$) were accumulated after ozone exposure. The above results of this study suggested that S. kamtschaticum is more resistant to atmospheric ozone than Hosta longipes. Considering its fast responses to ozone, it was also assumed that Hosta longipes can be used as an indicator plant of an increase in atmospheric ozone concentration.
