  • In general, capacitors have a large influence on the life of the system due to frequent charging and discharging. In this paper, we analyze the cause of the core failure of high voltage, high current HVDC sub-module film capacitor and analyze the precautions of the capacitor design and manufacturing process. First, the cause of the fault, the failure mode, and the effect are analyzed through the FMEA of the capacitor. To quantitatively evaluate the causes and effects of faults that have the greatest effect on the failure of a capacitor, a fault tree for the capacitor is presented and the failure rate is analyzed according to the design parameters and the driving conditions. It is verified that the main cause of capacitor failure is the capacitance change, and it is necessary to minimize the temperature rise, corona occurrence, electrode expansion, and insulation distance decrease during capacitor design and manufacturing process in order to reduce the failure rate of the capacitor.

  • For aerospace propulsion systems, Titanium Hydride Potassium Perchlorate (THPP) is a material commonly used as a pyrotechnic initiator that generates gas when energy is supplied or as a supplement charge for NASA standard initiator (NSI). However, when the energetic materials are stored for a long time, it faces the problem of 'aging'. In this study, changes in thermodynamic properties of THPP aged under various humidity environments were identified through thermal analysis and surface analysis. First, a considerable amount of cracks on the surface of the oxidant was found in the aged THPPs. Particularly, when the humidity level increased, the number and length of the cracks rapidly increased. Also, the deterioration of Viton was found only in the thermally aged sample whereas the oxidation of the fuel was more pronounced in the hygrothermally aged samples. The extracted kinetic parameters of THPP on the reaction progress vary greatly by the humidity level, indicating that moisture significantly changes the performance and combustion reaction of THPP, which may eventually result in a reduced lifespan.

  • Fatigue cracking occurs over long time period because dynamic strength of slab continuously decreases by vehicle loading repetitively applied to the concrete pavement. To more accurately predict the fatigue life of the concrete pavement, the stress due to environmental loading should be considered prior to calculating the stress due to the vehicle loading because the stress due to temperature and moisture distribution always exists within the slab. Accordingly, a new fatigue model considering the environmental loading was developed in this research by evaluating factors of existing fatigue models most widely used and by making data points from the models. The applicability of the new model was evaluated by performing a fatigue analysis on the general concrete pavement structure using local climatic and traffic conditions in Korea. It was concluded that the top-down cracking due to the tensile stress at top of the slab is dominant cause of the fatigue failure than the bottom-up cracking occurred at bottom of the slab. More advanced fatigue analysis considering vehicle speed is expected by developing this study.

  • In this study, the degradation properties by temperature stress of $Araldite^{(R)}$ rapid-curing epoxy resin used for inorganic cultural heritages, was identified. The tensile and tensile shear strength of durability decreased for 12,624 hours at temperatures of $40{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. In terms of stability of external stress and temperature, the slow-curing epoxy was superior to the rapid-curing epoxy, and cultural heritage conservation plans should therefore consider the strength and stress properties of restoration materials. Color differences increased for 12,624 hours at temperatures of $40{\sim}60^{\circ}C$, and glossiness decreased. Both color and gloss stability were weak, which necessitates the improvement of optical properties. Thermal properties (weight loss, decomposition temperature, and glass transition temperature) of adhesives are linked to mechanical properties. Interfacial properties of the adherend and water vapor transmission rates of adhesives are linked to performance variation. For porous media (ceramics, brick, and stone), isothermal and isohumid environments are important. For outdoor artifacts on display in museums, changes in physical properties by exposure to varying environmental conditions need to be minimized. These results can be used as baseline data in the study of the degradation velocity and lifetime prediction of rapid-curing epoxy resin for the restoration of cultural heritages.

  • Purpose: In terminally ill cancer patients, accurate prediction of survival is necessary for clinical and ethical reasons, especially in helping to avoid harm, discomfort and inappropriate therapies and in planning specific care strategies. The aim of the study was to investigate prognostic factor of dying patients. Methods: We enrolled the terminal cancer patients from Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital from 2004 until their death. We observed symptoms shown in dying patients and assess 17 common symptoms shown in terminally ill cancer patients, performance status, pain and analgesic use. Results: Average period from hospitalization to death was 11.7 days. The most important prognostic factor is performance status (KPS), average KPS at enrollment is 48% and at last 48 hours is 25%. Physical symptoms that have significant prognostic importance are poor oral intake, weakness, constipation, decreased Karnofsky performance status, bed sore, edema, jaundice, dry mouth, dyspnea. Dying patients showed markedly decreased systolic blood pressure, cyanosis, drowsiness, abnormal respiration, death rattle frequently at 48 hours before death. Conclusion: If we assess the symptoms more carefully, we can predict the more accurate prognosis. The communication about the prognostic information will influence the personal therapeutic decision and specific care planning.

  • With varying conditions of concrete surface, induced chloride contents are changed and this is a key parameter for steel corrosion and service life in RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures. Many surface enhancement techniques using impregnation have been developed, however the evaluation techniques for chloride behavior through doubly layered media and time-dependent diffusion are rarely proposed. This paper presents an analysis technique considering double-layer concrete and time-dependent diffusion behavior, and the results are compared with those from the previous test results through reverse analysis. The chloride profiles from the surface-impregnated concrete exposed to atmospheric, tidal, submerged zone for 2 years are adopted. Furthermore surface chloride contents and diffusion coefficients are obtained, and are compared with those from Life365. Through consideration of time effect, the relative error decreases from 0.28 to 0.20 in atmospheric, 0.29 to 0.11 in tidal, and 0.54 to 0.40 in submerged zone, respectively, which shows more reasonable results. Utilizing the diffusion coefficients from Life365, relative errors increases and it needs deeper penetration depth (e) and lower diffusion coefficient ratio ($D_1/D_2$) due to higher diffusion coefficient.

  • Cloud-aerosol interactions are considered to be one of the most important forcing mechanisms in the climate system. However, there is considerable disagreement on the magnitude and even on the sign of how aerosol perturbations affect cloud fraction and lifetime. Furthermore, aerosol effects on clouds and precipitation are not readily separable from the effects of meteorology. This review paper summarizes the study of precipitation susceptibility $S_o$, which qualifies how aerosol perturbations alter the magnitude of the precipitation rate (R) while minimizing the effects of macrophysical factors such as cloud depth (H) and liquid water path (LWP). The analysis shows that the precipitation susceptibility $S_o$ for the warm marine boundary layer clouds is insensitive to aerosol perturbations at low LWP (equivalently low H). However, R decreases as aerosols increase at intermediate LWP. This is because aerosols act as cloud seed and produce numerous small-sized particles, which impede the collision and coalescence process that leads to precipitation. At high LWP, $S_o$ decreases with increasing LWP as there are enough water contents in the clouds. The LWP or H dependent $S_o$ behavior differs depending on the predominant cloud physics processes in the clouds.

  • Some experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of the chemosterilant, hempa, on the biology of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae L., and the transmission of the lethal factors in the progeny. One to three days old adult males were fed on the wheat grains treated with concentrations of 0.0625, 0.125, 0.25, and $0.5\%$ of hempa water solution. The effects of the treatment on the mortality, longevity, and the performance of oviposition were examined for the Pl generation, and the hatchability and mortality in the postembryonic development were also tested in the $F_1,\;F_2,\;BC_1,\;F_3,\;and\;BC_2$ generations to analyze the inheritance of the lethal factors. The results obtained were summarized as follows. (1) The average longevity of the treated males were ranged from 26.6 to 30.4 days, and indicated no statistical differences. (2) The mortality of the treated males were ranged between $3.3\%\;and\;13.3\%$ and showed no statistical significance. (3) The overall mean number of eggs laid by a female mated to a treated male with concentrations of 0.0625, 0.125, 0.26 and $0.5\%$ were 3.78, 4.05, 3.75 and 3.61 for the respective treatments, and they were not differ significantly from those of control which were 3.60 per female per 3 day period. The unmated female laid 1.91 in the same period, and significantly differ from those in other experimental groups. (4) The overall mean hatchability of the eggs laid by the females mated with males that had been treated with various concentrations of hempa were 86.82, 64.77, 53.47, 40.33 and $24.78\%$ for the respective concentrations of 0, 0.0625, 0.125, 0.25 and $0.5\%$. The hatchability decreased with the increasing concentrations. (5) The minimum hatchabilities were obtained from the eggs laid in the period of 10-12 days after treatment, then the hatchability increased showing some recovery. The recovery seemed to be very much delayed for the males which had been treated with the greater concentrations. Such a difference in hatchability might be related with the sensitivity of the developmental stages of the sperms, and broader spectrum in the stages and severer effects seemed to be associated with the increased concentrations. (6) The overall mean of larval mortality in the $F_l$ generation were 6.55, 17.89, 27.40, 35.42 and $52.17\%$ for the respective concentrations of 0,0.0625, 0.125,0.25 and $0.5\%$. And there was a tendency to increase in the mortality with the increase of concentrations. (7) The correlation coefficients between per cent sterile eggs and larval mortality for the experimental plots of 0.125, 0.25 and $0.5\%$ treatments showed r=+0.83 and +0.85, respectively, and it seemed to be close correlation between the lethal effects on the embryonic and post-embryonic developments. (8) Since the $SC_{50}$ of the sterile eggs was $0.133\%$ and $SC_{50}$ of the larval mortality was $0.565\%$, it was considered that tile lethal factors expressed more in the egg stages than the larval stages. (9) The ratio of female to male in the $F_l$ adults showed 100 : 125, 100 : 108 and 100 : 124 for the plots of 0.125, 0.25 and $0.5\%$ treatments, respectively. And it n·as considered that the sex ratio distortions might occur with the higher concentrations. (10) When the F, males originated 1.on the eggs had been laid by p, in the period of 16-18 days after treatment, were crossed to normal females $(BC_1)$ and made sib matings $(F_2)$, the per cent sterile eggs of the $BC_1$ generation were 13.88 and $33.04\%$ , and were 31.01 and $38.73\%$ for the $F_2$generation with the plots of 0.0625 and $0.125\%$ treatment, respectively. And these seemed to be a results of the $F_1$ individuals are carrying some chromosomal aberrations (11) The larval mortality was the highest in the $F_2$ plot and followed the female backcross plot, and the least in the male backcrosses. (12) The proportions of 1st and 2nd instar larvae among the larval development at tile 17th day after oviposition were 10.98, 27.26, 32.98 and $15.73\%$ in the normal female $\times$ normal male, $F_1$ female$\times$normal male, normal $female \;\times F_1$ male and $female \;\times F_1$ male plots, respectively. It was considered that the larval development might be delayed by the treatment in the 2nd generation. (13) Per cent larval mortality and sterile eggs were greater in the $F_2$ sib mating plots $(F_3)$ than both of $F_2$ backcrosses. Therefore, it seemed that some of the recessive lethal mutations might affect in the further generations. (14) The sterility, induced by the treatment of chemosterilant, hempa, was considered as the result of the dominant lethal mutations due to chromosomal aberrations such as translocation and/or deletion. The effects of these lethal factors seemed to be inherited tip to 3rd generation after treatment.

  • The polymer insulators have been extensively used as an alternate material of ceramic insulators. However, when they are used in practical conditions, there are many problems of decreasing performance and shortening lifetime due to the exposures of degradation factors applied from the outdoor situations. Accordingly, the analysis of polymer degradations has been getting influential too late as one of important subjects for improvements of safety and reliability. Heat, water treatments are arbitrary simulated for finding out the initiations and processes of surface degradation on the polymer surface. Especially, this study is focused on the chemical changes properties. From the analysis of hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecular structures, final modeling of surface degradation is accomplished. We checked the contact angle depending on heat and moisturized accelerated degradation and ran an XPS analysis to check the mechanism change of the surface of the PCB polymer composite. The surface that had a tendency to attract moisture showed a decrease in the contact angle and generated a large amount of carboxyl($-COO^*$) radicals. The hydrophobized surface showed an increase in the contact angle and had a stable chemical composition constituted of the breakaway of oxygen radicals and the formation of double bond by carburization.
