The chemical composition and noble gas isotopes of 10 deep groundwater samples were analyzed to know the circulation of groundwaters in the Yangsan fault and the Gampo fault. The chemical types of groundwaters show the $Ca-HCO_3$ type and $Ca-SO_4(Cl)$ type, and show indistinct relationship with geology. Noble gas isotopic data of most groundwaters were plotted along the air-crust mixing line on $^3He/^4He$ vs. $4^He/^{20}Ne$ diagram, and show dominant $^3He$ of air origin except one sample that shows helium mixing of crust origin. This indicates that groundwater actively circulates along fault, and fault could not play an role of upward pathway of a deep-seated helium gas. A comparatively high $^4He$ indicates that groundwater flows in an aquifer assuring relatively enough water-rock interaction.
For the reasonable use of low grade-shallow geothermal energy by Standing Column Well(SCW) system, the basic requirements are depth-wise increase of earth temperature like $2^{\circ}C$ per every 100m depth, sufficient amount of groundwater production being about 10 to 30% of the design flow rate of GSHP with good water quality and moderate temperature, and non-collapsing of borehole wall during reinjection of circulating water into the SCW. A closed loop type-vertical ground heat exchanger(GHEX) with $100{\sim}150m$ deep can supply geothermal energy of 2 to 3 RT but a SCW with $400{\sim}500m$ deep can provide $30{\sim}40RT$ being equivalent to 10 to 15 numbers of GHEX as well requires smaller space. Being considered as an alternative of vertical GHEX, many numbers of SCW have been widely constructed in whole country without any account for site specific hydrogeologic and geothermal characteristics. When those are designed and constructed under the base of insufficient knowledges of hydrgeothermal properties of the relevant specific site as our current situations, a bad reputation will be created and it will hamper a rational utilization of geothermal energy using SCW in the near future. This paper is prepared for providing a guideline of SCW design comportable to our hydrogeothermal system.
This study characterizes aquifer system and hydrogeologic property in the western half of Jeju Island where wells were drilled for regional water supply in three sub-areas (northwestern, western, and southwestern sub-areas). The aquifer system of the northwestern sub-area is largely composed of upper high-permeability layer, upper low-permeability layer, lower high-permeability layer, and lower low-permeability layer. On the other hand, the aquifer systems of the western and southwestern sub-areas are mostly composed of upper low-permeability layer, high-permeability layer, and lower low-permeability layer. Transmissivity and specific capacity decrease in the order of the northwestern, western, and southwestern sub-areas. The relationship between specific capacity and the top surface of tuff is negative with a high correlation coefficient of -0.848, indicating that the tuff acts as the bottom of the aquifer. Groundwater level change due to the 2004 Sumatra earthquake is an average of 23.74 cm in the northwestern sub-area, an average of 9.48 cm in the western sub-area, and none in the southwestern sub-area. Further, it is found that groundwater change due to the earthquake has a positive relationship with transmissivity and specific capacity.

Recently, the vulnerability of water resources has been increasing owing to climate change, highlighting the importance of groundwater. In particular, the Nakdong River Basin, located in the southern part of Korea, experiences frequent water scarcity phenomena, such as droughts. This study analyzed the hydrogeological characteristics of the study area by examining groundwater and stream water in the Gwangrye Stream, downstream of the Nakdong River Basin, in August and October 2023. Therefore, we collected samples from 54 groundwater wells and five streams for water quality analysis. The results of the field tests indicated an increasing trend in electrical conductivity from upstream to downstream in the study area. Laboratory analyses confirmed that the concentration of Na increased from upstream to downstream more than that of Ca. In conclusion, both stream water and groundwater were influenced by anthropogenic contamination. These changes were closely related to land use in the study area. The upstream areas are primarily composed of forests, whereas the downstream areas are composed of industrial complexes, wastewater treatment facilities, and agricultural areas, which are likely to affect both stream water and groundwater.
Geological CO2 sequestration is a global warming response technology to limit atmospheric emissions by injecting CO2 captured on a large scale into deep geological formations. The presented results concern mineralogical and hydrogeological investigations (FE-SEM, XRD, XRF, and MICP) of mudstone samples from drilling cores of the Pohang basin, which is the research area for the first demonstration-scale CO2 storage project in Korea. They aim to identify the mineral properties of the mudstone constituting the caprock and to quantitatively evaluate the hydrogeologic sealing capacity that directly affects the stability and reliability of geological CO2 storage. Mineralogical analysis showed that the mudstone samples are mainly composed of quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase and a small amount of pyrite, calcite, clay minerals, etc. Mercury intrusion capillary pressure analysis also showed that the samples generally had uniform particle configurations and pore distribution and there was no distinct correlation between the estimated porosity and air permeability. The allowable CO2 column heights based on the estimated pore-entry pressures and breakthrough pressures were found to be significantly higher than the thickness of the targeting CO2 injection layer. These results showed that the mudstone layers in the Yeongil group, Pohang basin, Korea have sufficient sealing capacity to suppress the leakage of CO2 injected during the demonstration-scale CO2 storage project. It should be noticed, however, that the applicability of results and analyses in this study is limited by the lack of available samples. For rigorous assessment of the sealing efficiency for geological CO2 storage operations, significant efforts on collection and multi-aspect evaluation for core samples over entire caprock formations should be accompanied.

Estimations of porosity and bulk density, particle size analysis of soli samples, tracer test and slug test were performed in a petroleum contaminated area of Kangwon for understanding characteristics of the aquifer. Porosities of the samples were estimated 0.158~0.257, and bulk densities were estimated as $1.73\sim2.10\;g/cm^3$. Majority proportion of the soil samples was 0.5~1.0 mm size. In the soil texture triangle, all samples were distributed at sand area. Uniformity coefficients were estimated as 7.71~10.39, and thus all samples were poorly-sorted. In the tracer test, Darcy velocity was estimated to $4.8\times10^{-6}$ cm/day, effective porosity was 0.175, and longitudinal dispersivity was 0.1 m. According to the slug test, hydraulic conductivities of the test wells were estimated as $2.243\times10^{-2}\sim1.634\times10^{-2}$ cm/sec. These hydrogeologic parameters can be used for efficient remediation design of the petroleum contaminated area.

Sumgol in Jeju Island plays a significant role in groundwater recharge due to its permeable hydrogeological characteristics. However, a quantitative assessment of the interrelationship between rainfall characteristics and rainwater inflows into Sumgols has not yet been conducted. Therefore, this study examined the characteristics of rainwater inflow into three Sumgols located in the eastern and western regions of Jeju Island and assessed hydrogeologic factors influencing these inflows. During two rainfall events, the studied locations in Sumgol exhibited different characteristics of rainwater inflows, despite experiencing similar rainfall events. Additionally, the delay time for rainwater to reach the Sumgol locations after the rainfall was influenced more by rainfall intensity than by cumulative amount of rainfall. In Sumgols located in non-volcanic ash soil with low hydraulic conductivity, such as those in agricultural areas, rainwater inflows were observed even with small rainfall and low rainfall intensity. This study suggests that rainfall intensity, soil characteristics, permeability of lava flows, and land use are key factors influencing rainwater inflow into Sumgols, revealing that soil characteristics and the permeability of lava flows have a greater impact on surface runoff than land use.
Thermo-hydro-chemico-mechanical evolution of the radioactive waste repository and surrounding geological media is one of the key issues for the radioactive waste disposal. This article describes not only the basic context for the site selection but also a reasonable strategy for the repository related research based on the results of the French repository project carried out by ANDRA (National radioactive waste management agency). To have some alternatives for the determination of a preferable depth and geological media, it would be recommendable to establish a database system. The curing process of the fractures or microfissures in the EDZ (Excavation Disturbed Zone) during operation time has to be examined considering the evolution of the EDZ and the reversibility of the repository. It is prerequisite to carry out a feasibility study and to validate the design concept and design parameters in a properly constructed underground research laboratory (URL) in Korea.
