Dynamic Analysis of a Rotating System Due to the Effect of Ball Bearing Waviness (I) -Vibration Analysis- (Waviness가 있는 볼베어링으로 지지된 회전계의 동특성 해석 (II)-안정성 해석 -)

  • This research presents an analytical model to investigate the stability due to the ball bearing waviness i n a rotating system supported by two ball bearings. The stiffness of a ball bearing changes periodically due to the waviness in the rolling elements as the rotor rotates, and it can be calculated by differentiating the nonlinear contact forces. The linearized equations of motion can be represented as a parametrically excited system in the form of Mathieu's equation, because the stiffness coefficients have time -varying components due to the waviness. Their solution can be assumed as a Fourier series expansion so that the equations of motion can be rewritten as the simultaneous algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability can be determined by solving the Hill's infinite determinant of these algebraic equations. The validity of this research is proved by comparing the stability chart with the time responses of the vibration model suggested by prior researches. This research shows that the waviness in the rolling elements of a ball bearing generates the time-varying component of the stiffness coefficient, whose frequency is called the frequency of the parametric excitation. It also shows that the instability takes place from the positions in which the ratio of the natural frequency to the frequency of the parametric excitation corresponds to i/2 (i=1,2,3..).

  • In this study. investigated the effect of shot peening on the corrosion of SAE 5155 steel immersed in $3.5\%$ NaCl solution and corrosion characteristics by the heat treatment during shot peening process. The immersion test was Performed on the four kinds of specimens. Corrosion Potential, polarization curve, residual stress etc. were investigated from experimental results. From these test results, the effect of shot peening on the corrosion was evaluated The important results of the experimental study on the effects of shot peened SAE 5155 on the corrosion are as follows; Shot peened specimens show the low of corrosion current as compared with un peened specimens. In the case of corrosion potential, shot Peened specimen shows more negative Potential as compared with that of parent metal Surface of specimen, which is treated with shot peening Process. is Placed as more activated state against inner parent metal. Corrosion rate is shown that shot Peened specimens have less corrode than un peened specimens. But non heat treated shot peened specimens show the biggest weight loss owing to variable compressive residual stress layer by shot ball.

  • Welding is the most commonly used method to produce bogie and carbody of Electrical Multiple Units(EMU), because it increases the strength and lowers the weight of EMU. Since bogies are constantly exposed to repeated reacting load during acceleration and deceleration, it is also true that crack normally occurs at welding parts. In this study, we have investigated the fatigue strength of SS400 on welded parts in order to find efficiency of treatment after welding by shot peening and Post-Weld heat treatment(PWHT) with butt welded specimens. The results of fatigue test indicate that the measurement of base material specimen is 236MPa, welded specimen is 132MPa and the specimen of PWHT is 107MPa approximately. We concluded that the measurement of welded specimen and PWHT is approximately 44 and 54 percents lower than the base material specimen, respectively. Another finding is that the peened specimen is approximately 23 and 61 percents higher than the base material specimen in terms of the fatigue in strength of specimens.

  • One of the useful technology for light-weightening of components required in the automobile and machine industry is to use of high strength materials. To improve material properties, carbonizing treatment, nitrifying treatment, and shot-peening method are representatively applied, However, the shot-peening method is generally used to remove the surface defect of steel and to improve the fatigue strength on surface. Benefits by shot peening are to make increase resistance against fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, fretting, galling, erosion and closing of pores.   • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, fatigue failure phenomena, which happen in metal, bring on danger in human life and property. Therefore, antifatigue failure technology takes an important part of current industries. Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defects from the surface of steel and improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore, in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9)by shot peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in stress ratio(R=0 1, R=0 3, R=0 6)was investigated considering fracture mechanics. By using the methods mentioned above, I arrived at the following conclusions: (1) The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the shot peening material was lower than the unpeening material And in stage I, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, the threshold stress intensity factor, of the shot peening material is high in critical parts unlike the unpeening material. (2) Fatigue life shows more Improvement in the shot peening material than in the unpeening material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot peening processed operate the resistance of fatigue crack propagation.

  • Shot peening can be defined as the process of work hardening of the surface of components by means of propelled stream of spherical shot. Benefits due to shot peening are increase in resistance to fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, fretting, galling, erosion and closing of pores. In this study, the influence of shot peening on the corrosion was investigated on spring steel immersed in $3.5\%\;NaCl$. The immersion test was performed on the two kinds of specimens. Corrosion potential, polarization curve, residual stress and etc. were investigated from experimental results. From test results, the effect of shot peening on the corrosion was evaluated. The important results of the experimental study on the effects of shot peened spring steels on the environment corrosion are as follows; In case of corrosion potential, shot peened specimen shows more activated negative direction as compared with parent metal. Surface of specimen, which is treated with the shot peened, is placed as more activated state against inner base metal. It can cause the anti-corrosion effect on the base metal.

  • Shot-peening is frequently used on various mechanical parts because it can improve the fatigue life of components by generating compressive residual stresses on the surface. This can be done by repeatedly hitting the work-piece surface with small balls and making indentations on it. In fact, finding optimal peening time among various peening parameters is the most important. Under-peening can not improve the fatigue life sufficiently while over-peening causes cracks and reduces fatigue life in contrast. In general, optimal peening time is experimentally determined by measuring arc-height using Almen-strip in accordance with SAE J442 standard. To save the time and efforts spent in carrying out experiments to find optimal peening time, this paper presents a computer simulation algorithm for the estimation of surface coverage made by impeller type shot-peening machines (PMI-0608). Surface coverage is defined as the proportion of the work-piece surface that has been indented in a given time of shot-peening. An example (standard tensile test specimen) is presented to validate the proposed method.

  • The development of new materials with light weight and high strength has become vital to the machinery, aircraft and auto industries. However, there are a lot of problems with developing such materials that require expensive tools, and a great deal of time and effort. Therefore, the improvement of fatigue strength and fatigue life are mainly focused on adopting residual stress(in this thesis). The compressive residual stress was imposed on the surface according to each shot velocity(57, 70, 83, 96 m/sec) based on Shot-peening, which is the method of improving fatigue life and strength. By using the methods mentioned above, the following conclusions have been drawn. 1. The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the Shot-peened material was lower than that of the Un-peened material. And in stage I, ΔKth, the threshold stress intensity factor, of the shot-peen processed material is high in critical parts unlike the Un-peened material. Also m, fatigue crack growth exponent and number of cycle of the Shot-peened material was higher than that of the Un-peened material. That is concluded from effect of da/dN. 2. Fatigue life shows more improvement in the Shot-peened material than in the Un-peened material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the Shot-peen processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation.

The Effect of Residual Stresses on Surface Failure and Wear (잔류응력의 표면파손과 마멸에 대한 영향)

  • Break-in is an intentional treatment to enhance the performance life of machinery parts and to maintain static friction behavior. Most studies on break-in have concerned only about surface conditions such as roughness or film formation. But the exact mechanism of break-in has not been found yet. Friction, scuffing behavior and wear of AISI 1045 were studied in relation to break-in and residual stress. The cylinder-on-disk type tribometer was used with the line-contact geometry. Scuffing tests were carried out using a constant load of 730N. In the break-in procedure the step load was applied from 100N to 200N. In this experiment, it was found that the break-in helps compressive residual stress to be formed well enough to enhance the scuffing life during the scuffing test. Specimens that had high compressive residual stress induced by shot-peening show better wear resistance than those were not shot-peened. Results of scuffing test, break-in procedure and wear amount in relation to residual stress have been discussed.

The fatigue crack growth rate of the Shot-peened material was lower than that of the un peened material. Also m, fatigue crack growth exponent and number of cycle of the shot peened material was higher than that of the un peened material. That is concluded from effect of da/dN.
